And David sent out the army, one third under the command of Joab, one third under the command of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother, and one third under the command of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said to the men, “I myself will also go out with you.”
І послав Давид народ, — третину під рукою Йоа́ва, і третину під рукою Авіша́я, сина Церуї, Йоавового брата, а третину під рукою ґатянина Ітта́я. І сказав цар до народу: „Конче піду́ також і я з вами!“
But the men said, “You shall not go out. For if we flee, they will not care about us. If half of us die, they will not care about us. But you are worth ten thousand of us. Therefore it is better that you send us help from the city.”
Та народ сказав: „Ти не пі́деш! Бо якщо ми справді втече́мо, вони не звернуть на нас уваги. І якщо половина нас повмирає, вони не звернуть на нас уваги, бо ти — як нас десять тисяч. А тепер буде ліпше, як бу́деш допомага́ти нам із міста“.
The king said to them, “Whatever seems best to you I will do.” So the king stood at the side of the gate, while all the army marched out by hundreds and by thousands.
І сказав до них цар: „Що́ буде добре в оча́х ваших, зроблю́“. І став цар при брамі, а ввесь наро́д повихо́див за сотнями та за тисячами.
And the king ordered Joab and Abishai and Ittai, “Deal gently for my sake with the young man Absalom.” And all the people heard when the king gave orders to all the commanders about Absalom.
А цар наказав Йоавові й Авішаєві та Іттаєві, говорячи: „Обере́жно будьте мені з моїм юнако́м Авесаломом!“ А ввесь народ чув, як цар наказав усім провідника́м про Авесало́ма.
So the army went out into the field against Israel, and the battle was fought in the forest of Ephraim.
І вийшов народ на поле навпере́йми Ізраїля, і був бій в Єфремовому лісі.
And the men of Israel were defeated there by the servants of David, and the loss there was great on that day, twenty thousand men.
І був побитий там Ізраїлів народ Давидовими раба́ми. І була там того дня велика пора́зка, — полягло двадцять тисяч!
The battle spread over the face of all the country, and the forest devoured more people that day than the sword.
І поши́рився там бій по всій тій землі, і того дня більш народу пожер ліс, ніж поїв меч.
І спітка́вся Авесало́м із Давидовими рабами, а Авесалом їхав на мулі. І підбіг мул під гуща́вину великого дуба, а його воло́сся заплу́талося в ду́бі, і він опинився між небом та між землею, а мул, що під ним, перебіг.
And a certain man saw it and told Joab, “Behold, I saw Absalom hanging in an oak.”
І побачив це один чоловік, і доніс Йоаву та й сказав: „Ось я бачив Авесалома, що ви́сить на дубі“.
Joab said to the man who told him, “What, you saw him! Why then did you not strike him there to the ground? I would have been glad to give you ten pieces of silver and a belt.”
І сказав Йоав до чоловіка, що доно́сив йому: „Ось ти бачив, а чому́ ти не вра́зив його там на землі, а я дав би був тобі десять шеклів срібла та одно́го пояса“.
But the man said to Joab, “Even if I felt in my hand the weight of a thousand pieces of silver, I would not reach out my hand against the king’s son, for in our hearing the king commanded you and Abishai and Ittai, ‘For my sake protect the young man Absalom.’
І сказав той чоловік до Йоава: „А коли б я важив на руці своїй навіть тисячу шеклів срібла, — не простягну́ своєї руки на царсько́го сина, бо ми чули на власні вуха, що цар наказав тобі й Авішаєві та Іттаєві, говорячи: Збережіть мені мого юнака́ Авесалома!
Або коли б я допусти́вся в душі своїй неправди, — а всяка річ не зата́їться перед царем! — то й ти став би проти мене“.
Joab said, “I will not waste time like this with you.” And he took three javelins in his hand and thrust them into the heart of Absalom while he was still alive in the oak.
І сказав Йоав: „Не буду отак зволіка́ти з тобою!“ І він узяв три стрілі́ в ру́ку свою, і вбив їх у серце Авесалома, що ще живий ви́сів на сере́дині дуба.
And ten young men, Joab’s armor-bearers, surrounded Absalom and struck him and killed him.
І оточили його десять юнаків, Йоавові зброєноші, і вда́рили Авесало́ма, та й убили його.
Then Joab blew the trumpet, and the troops came back from pursuing Israel, for Joab restrained them.
І засурми́в Йоав у сурму́, а народ повернувся з погоні за Ізраїлем, бо Йоав стримав наро́д.
And they took Absalom and threw him into a great pit in the forest and raised over him a very great heap of stones. And all Israel fled every one to his own home.
I взяли вони Авесалома, та й кинули його в лісі до великої ями, і наки́дали над ним дуже велику могилу з каміння, а ввесь Ізраїль повтіка́в кожен до намету свого.
А Авесалом узяв був і поставив собі ще за життя свого пам'ятника, що в царські́й долині, бо він казав: „Нема в мене сина, щоб згадувати про йме́ння моє“. І він назвав пам'ятникові ім'я на своє ім'я́. І звалось його: Яд-Авесалом, і так зветься він аж до цього дня.
David Hears of Absalom’s Death
Then Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said, “Let me run and carry news to the king that the Lord has delivered him from the hand of his enemies.”

А Ахіма́ац, Садоків син, сказав: „Побіжу́ я й сповіщу́ цареві, що Господь ви́зволив його від руки його ворогів“.
And Joab said to him, “You are not to carry news today. You may carry news another day, but today you shall carry no news, because the king’s son is dead.”
І сказав йому Йоав: „Не ти вісник цього дня, а сповісти́ш іншого дня. А цього дня не сповісти́ш тому́, що це ж царськи́й син помер“.
Then Joab said to the Cushite, “Go, tell the king what you have seen.” The Cushite bowed before Joab, and ran.
І сказав Йоав до кушита: „Іди, донеси цареві, що́ ти бачив“. А кушит уклонився Йоавові, та й побіг.
Then Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said again to Joab, “Come what may, let me also run after the Cushite.” And Joab said, “Why will you run, my son, seeing that you will have no reward for the news?”
А Ахіма́ац, син Садока, знову сказав до Йоава: „А нехай бу́де, що буде! Побіжу́ й я за кушитом!“ Йоав же відказав: „Пощо ти побіжи́ш, мій сину, коли нема доброї вістки?“
“Come what may,” he said, “I will run.” So he said to him, “Run.” Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the plain, and outran the Cushite.
„А нехай буде, що буде, — побіжу́!“ І той сказав йому: „Біжи!“ І побіг Ахіма́ац дорогою рівнини, і ви́передив кушита.
Now David was sitting between the two gates, and the watchman went up to the roof of the gate by the wall, and when he lifted up his eyes and looked, he saw a man running alone.
А Давид сидів між двома брамами. А вартівни́к пішов на дах брами на мур, і звів свої очі та й побачив, — аж ось біжить самі́тний чоловік.
The watchman called out and told the king. And the king said, “If he is alone, there is news in his mouth.” And he drew nearer and nearer.
І кликнув вартівни́к, і доніс цареві. А цар сказав: „Якщо він сам, — вістка в устах його!“ А чоловік усе йшов та зближа́вся.
The watchman saw another man running. And the watchman called to the gate and said, “See, another man running alone!” The king said, “He also brings news.”
І побачив вартівни́к іншого чоловіка, що біг. І кликнув вартівник до сторожа брами й сказав: „Ось біжить самі́тний чоловік“. А цар сказав: „І цей зо звісткою!“
The watchman said, “I think the running of the first is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok.” And the king said, “He is a good man and comes with good news.”
І сказав вартівник: „Я бачу біг першого, як біг Ахіма́аца, Садокового сина“. А цар сказав: „То чоловік добрий, і прихо́дить з доброю звісткою“.
Then Ahimaaz cried out to the king, “All is well.” And he bowed before the king with his face to the earth and said, “Blessed be the Lord your God, who has delivered up the men who raised their hand against my lord the king.”
І кликнув Ахіма́ац, і сказав до царя: „Мир!“ І вклонився він цареві своїм обличчям до землі та й сказав: „Благословенний Господь, Бог твій, що видав людей, які підне́сли були руку свою проти мого пана царя!“
And the king said, “Is it well with the young man Absalom?” Ahimaaz answered, “When Joab sent the king’s servant, your servant, I saw a great commotion, but I do not know what it was.”
А цар сказав: „Чи гаразд із моїм юнаком Авесаломом?“ І сказав Ахіма́ац: „Я бачив велике замі́шання, коли Йоав посилав царсько́го раба та мене, твойого раба, та я не знаю, що́ то“.
And the king said, “Turn aside and stand here.” So he turned aside and stood still.
І сказав цар: „Відійди на́бік, стань отут“. І той відійшов на́бік та й став.
David’s Grief
And behold, the Cushite came, and the Cushite said, “Good news for my lord the king! For the Lord has delivered you this day from the hand of all who rose up against you.”

Аж ось прихо́дить кушит. І сказав кушит: „Нехай при́йме звістку мій пан цар, бо сьогодні ви́зволив тебе Господь від руки всіх повстаючих на тебе“.
The king said to the Cushite, “Is it well with the young man Absalom?” And the Cushite answered, “May the enemies of my lord the king and all who rise up against you for evil be like that young man.”
І сказав цар до кушита: „Чи гаразд із моїм юнако́м Авесаломом?“ І сказав кушит: „Нехай станетья, як тому юнако́ві, ворогам мого пана царя та всім, що повста́ли на тебе на зло!“
