    The Ark Brought to Jerusalem

    David again gathered all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand.

    Moving the Ark to Jerusalem

    Then David again gathered all the elite troops in Israel, 30,000 in all.

    And David arose and went with all the people who were with him from Baale-judah to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the name of the Lord of hosts who sits enthroned on the cherubim.

    He led them to Baalah of Judaha to bring back the Ark of God, which bears the name of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies,b who is enthroned between the cherubim.

    And they carried the ark of God on a new cart and brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. And Uzzah and Ahio,a the sons of Abinadab, were driving the new cart,

    They placed the Ark of God on a new cart and brought it from Abinadab’s house, which was on a hill. Uzzah and Ahio, Abinadab’s sons, were guiding the cart

    with the ark of God,b and Ahio went before the ark.

    Uzzah and the Ark

    And David and all the house of Israel were celebrating before the Lord, with songsc and lyres and harps and tambourines and castanets and cymbals.

    David and all the people of Israel were celebrating before the LORD, singing songsd and playing all kinds of musical instruments — lyres, harps, tambourines, castanets, and cymbals.

    And when they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled.

    But when they arrived at the threshing floor of Nacon, the oxen stumbled, and Uzzah reached out his hand and steadied the Ark of God.

    And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah, and God struck him down there because of his error, and he died there beside the ark of God.

    Then the LORD’s anger was aroused against Uzzah, and God struck him dead because of this.e So Uzzah died right there beside the Ark of God.

    And David was angry because the Lord had broken out against Uzzah. And that place is called Perez-uzzahd to this day.

    David was angry because the LORD’s anger had burst out against Uzzah. He named that place Perez-uzzah (which means “to burst out against Uzzah”), as it is still called today.

    And David was afraid of the Lord that day, and he said, “How can the ark of the Lord come to me?”

    David was now afraid of the LORD, and he asked, “How can I ever bring the Ark of the LORD back into my care?”

    So David was not willing to take the ark of the Lord into the city of David. But David took it aside to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.

    So David decided not to move the Ark of the LORD into the City of David. Instead, he took it to the house of Obed-edom of Gath.

    And the ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite three months, and the Lord blessed Obed-edom and all his household.

    The Ark of the LORD remained there in Obed-edom’s house for three months, and the LORD blessed Obed-edom and his entire household.

    And it was told King David, “The Lord has blessed the household of Obed-edom and all that belongs to him, because of the ark of God.” So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom to the city of David with rejoicing.

    Then King David was told, “The LORD has blessed Obed-edom’s household and everything he has because of the Ark of God.” So David went there and brought the Ark of God from the house of Obed-edom to the City of David with a great celebration.

    And when those who bore the ark of the Lord had gone six steps, he sacrificed an ox and a fattened animal.

    After the men who were carrying the Ark of the LORD had gone six steps, David sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf.

    And David danced before the Lord with all his might. And David was wearing a linen ephod.

    And David danced before the LORD with all his might, wearing a priestly garment.f

    So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting and with the sound of the horn.

    David and Michal

    As the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, and she despised him in her heart.

    Michal’s Contempt for David

    But as the Ark of the LORD entered the City of David, Michal, the daughter of Saul, looked down from her window. When she saw King David leaping and dancing before the LORD, she was filled with contempt for him.

    And they brought in the ark of the Lord and set it in its place, inside the tent that David had pitched for it. And David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord.

    They brought the Ark of the LORD and set it in its place inside the special tent David had prepared for it. And David sacrificed burnt offerings and peace offerings to the LORD.

    And when David had finished offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts

    When he had finished his sacrifices, David blessed the people in the name of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies.

    and distributed among all the people, the whole multitude of Israel, both men and women, a cake of bread, a portion of meat,e and a cake of raisins to each one. Then all the people departed, each to his house.

    Then he gave to every Israelite man and woman in the crowd a loaf of bread, a cake of dates,g and a cake of raisins. Then all the people returned to their homes.

    And David returned to bless his household. But Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David and said, “How the king of Israel honored himself today, uncovering himself today before the eyes of his servants’ female servants, as one of the vulgar fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!”

    When David returned home to bless his own family, Michal, the daughter of Saul, came out to meet him. She said in disgust, “How distinguished the king of Israel looked today, shamelessly exposing himself to the servant girls like any vulgar person might do!”

    And David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, who chose me above your father and above all his house, to appoint me as princef over Israel, the people of the Lord — and I will celebrate before the Lord.

    David retorted to Michal, “I was dancing before the LORD, who chose me above your father and all his family! He appointed me as the leader of Israel, the people of the LORD, so I celebrate before the LORD.

    I will make myself yet more contemptible than this, and I will be abased in yourg eyes. But by the female servants of whom you have spoken, by them I shall be held in honor.”

    Yes, and I am willing to look even more foolish than this, even to be humiliated in my own eyes! But those servant girls you mentioned will indeed think I am distinguished!”

    And Michal the daughter of Saul had no child to the day of her death.

    So Michal, the daughter of Saul, remained childless throughout her entire life.
