New Living Translation

  • The Revolt Against Rehoboam

Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king.
  • The Northern Tribes Revolt

Rehoboam went to Shechem, where all Israel had gathered to make him king.
  • And as soon as Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it (for he was in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon), then Jeroboam returned from Egypt.
  • When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard of this, he returned from Egypt, for he had fled to Egypt to escape from King Solomon.
  • And they sent and called him. And Jeroboam and all Israel came and said to Rehoboam,
  • The leaders of Israel summoned him, and Jeroboam and all Israel went to speak with Rehoboam.
  • “Your father made our yoke heavy. Now therefore lighten the hard service of your father and his heavy yoke on us, and we will serve you.”
  • “Your father was a hard master,” they said. “Lighten the harsh labor demands and heavy taxes that your father imposed on us. Then we will be your loyal subjects.”
  • He said to them, “Come to me again in three days.” So the people went away.
  • Rehoboam replied, “Come back in three days for my answer.” So the people went away.
  • Then King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men,a who had stood before Solomon his father while he was yet alive, saying, “How do you advise me to answer this people?”
  • Then King Rehoboam discussed the matter with the older men who had counseled his father, Solomon. “What is your advice?” he asked. “How should I answer these people?”
  • And they said to him, “If you will be good to this people and please them and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever.”
  • The older counselors replied, “If you are good to these people and do your best to please them and give them a favorable answer, they will always be your loyal subjects.”
  • But he abandoned the counsel that the old men gave him, and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him and stood before him.
  • But Rehoboam rejected the advice of the older men and instead asked the opinion of the young men who had grown up with him and were now his advisers.
  • And he said to them, “What do you advise that we answer this people who have said to me, ‘Lighten the yoke that your father put on us’?”
  • “What is your advice?” he asked them. “How should I answer these people who want me to lighten the burdens imposed by my father?”
  • And the young men who had grown up with him said to him, “Thus shall you speak to the people who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you lighten it for us’; thus shall you say to them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s thighs.
  • The young men replied, “This is what you should tell those complainers who want a lighter burden: ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist!
  • And now, whereas my father laid on you a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke. My father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.’”
  • Yes, my father laid heavy burdens on you, but I’m going to make them even heavier! My father beat you with whips, but I will beat you with scorpions!’”
  • So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king said, “Come to me again the third day.”
  • Three days later Jeroboam and all the people returned to hear Rehoboam’s decision, just as the king had ordered.
  • And the king answered them harshly; and forsaking the counsel of the old men,
  • But Rehoboam spoke harshly to them, for he rejected the advice of the older counselors
  • King Rehoboam spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it. My father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.”
  • and followed the counsel of his younger advisers. He told the people, “My father laida heavy burdens on you, but I’m going to make them even heavier! My father beat you with whips, but I will beat you with scorpions!”
  • So the king did not listen to the people, for it was a turn of affairs brought about by God that the Lord might fulfill his word, which he spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
  • So the king paid no attention to the people. This turn of events was the will of God, for it fulfilled the LORD’s message to Jeroboam son of Nebat through the prophet Ahijah from Shiloh.
  • And when all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them, the people answered the king, “What portion have we in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse. Each of you to your tents, O Israel! Look now to your own house, David.” So all Israel went to their tents.
  • When all Israel realizedb that the king had refused to listen to them, they responded,
“Down with the dynasty of David!
We have no interest in the son of Jesse.
Back to your homes, O Israel!
Look out for your own house, O David!”
So all the people of Israel returned home.
  • But Rehoboam reigned over the people of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah.
  • But Rehoboam continued to rule over the Israelites who lived in the towns of Judah.
  • Then King Rehoboam sent Hadoram,b who was taskmaster over the forced labor, and the people of Israel stoned him to death with stones. And King Rehoboam quickly mounted his chariot to flee to Jerusalem.
  • King Rehoboam sent Adoniram,c who was in charge of forced labor, to restore order, but the people of Israel stoned him to death. When this news reached King Rehoboam, he quickly jumped into his chariot and fled to Jerusalem.
  • So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.
  • And to this day the northern tribes of Israel have refused to be ruled by a descendant of David.
