  • The Exiles Return

    Now these were the people of the province who came up out of the captivity of those exiles whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried captive to Babylonia. They returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town.
  • Exiles Who Returned with Zerubbabel

    Here is the list of the Jewish exiles of the provinces who returned from their captivity. King Nebuchadnezzar had deported them to Babylon, but now they returned to Jerusalem and the other towns in Judah where they originally lived.
  • They came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Seraiah, Reelaiah, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispar, Bigvai, Rehum, and Baanah.
    The number of the men of the people of Israel:
  • Their leaders were Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Seraiah, Reelaiah, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispar, Bigvai, Rehum, and Baanah.

  • In all, the Temple servants and the descendants of Solomon’s servants numbered 392.
  • The following were those who came up from Tel-melah, Tel-harsha, Cherub, Addan, and Immer, though they could not prove their fathers’ houses or their descent, whether they belonged to Israel:
  • Another group returned at this time from the towns of Tel-melah, Tel-harsha, Kerub, Addan, and Immer. However, they could not prove that they or their families were descendants of Israel.
  • the sons of Delaiah, the sons of Tobiah, and the sons of Nekoda, 652.
  • This group included the families of Delaiah, Tobiah, and Nekoda — a total of 652 people.
  • Also, of the sons of the priests: the sons of Habaiah, the sons of Hakkoz, and the sons of Barzillai (who had taken a wife from the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite, and was called by their name).
  • Three families of priests — Hobaiah, Hakkoz, and Barzillai — also returned. (This Barzillai had married a woman who was a descendant of Barzillai of Gilead, and he had taken her family name.)
  • These sought their registration among those enrolled in the genealogies, but they were not found there, and so they were excluded from the priesthood as unclean.
  • They searched for their names in the genealogical records, but they were not found, so they were disqualified from serving as priests.
  • The governor told them that they were not to partake of the most holy food, until there should be a priest to consult Urim and Thummim.
  • The governor told them not to eat the priests’ share of food from the sacrifices until a priest could consult the LORD about the matter by using the Urim and Thummim — the sacred lots.
  • The whole assembly together was 42,360,
  • So a total of 42,360 people returned to Judah,
  • besides their male and female servants, of whom there were 7,337, and they had 200 male and female singers.
  • in addition to 7,337 servants and 200 singers, both men and women.
  • Their horses were 736, their mules were 245,
  • They took with them 736 horses, 245 mules,
  • their camels were 435, and their donkeys were 6,720.
  • 435 camels, and 6,720 donkeys.
  • Some of the heads of families, when they came to the house of the Lord that is in Jerusalem, made freewill offerings for the house of God, to erect it on its site.
  • When they arrived at the Temple of the LORD in Jerusalem, some of the family leaders made voluntary offerings toward the rebuilding of God’s Temple on its original site,
  • According to their ability they gave to the treasury of the work 61,000 daricsa of gold, 5,000 minasb of silver, and 100 priests’ garments.
  • and each leader gave as much as he could. The total of their gifts came to 61,000 gold coins,e 6,250 poundsf of silver, and 100 robes for the priests.
  • Now the priests, the Levites, some of the people, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the temple servants lived in their towns, and all the rest of Israelc in their towns.
  • So the priests, the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, the Temple servants, and some of the common people settled in villages near Jerusalem. The rest of the people returned to their own towns throughout Israel.
