  • Why Have You Forsaken Me?

    To the choirmaster: according to The Doe of the Dawn. A Psalm of David.

    My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
    Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?
  • For the choir director: A psalm of David, to be sung to the tune “Doe of the Dawn.”

    My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?
    Why are you so far away when I groan for help?
  • O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer,
    and by night, but I find no rest.
  • Every day I call to you, my God, but you do not answer.
    Every night I lift my voice, but I find no relief.
  • Yet you are holy,
    enthroned on the praisesa of Israel.

  • In you our fathers trusted;
    they trusted, and you delivered them.
  • Our ancestors trusted in you,
    and you rescued them.
  • To you they cried and were rescued;
    in you they trusted and were not put to shame.

    They trusted in you and were never disgraced.
  • But I am a worm and not a man,
    scorned by mankind and despised by the people.

  • All who see me mock me;
    they make mouths at me; they wag their heads;

  • “He trusts in the Lord; let him deliver him;
    let him rescue him, for he delights in him!”
  • “Is this the one who relies on the LORD?
    Then let the LORD save him!
    If the LORD loves him so much,
    let the LORD rescue him!”
  • Yet you are he who took me from the womb;
    you made me trust you at my mother’s breasts.
  • Yet you brought me safely from my mother’s womb
    and led me to trust you at my mother’s breast.
  • On you was I cast from my birth,
    and from my mother’s womb you have been my God.
  • I was thrust into your arms at my birth.
    You have been my God from the moment I was born.
  • Be not far from me,
    for trouble is near,
    and there is none to help.

  • I will tell of your name to my brothers;
    in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:

  • You who fear the Lord, praise him!
    All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him,
    and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!
  • Praise the LORD, all you who fear him!
    Honor him, all you descendants of Jacob!
    Show him reverence, all you descendants of Israel!
  • For he has not despised or abhorred
    the affliction of the afflicted,
    and he has not hidden his face from him,
    but has heard, when he cried to him.
  • For he has not ignored or belittled the suffering of the needy.
    He has not turned his back on them,
    but has listened to their cries for help.
  • From you comes my praise in the great congregation;
    my vows I will perform before those who fear him.
  • I will praise you in the great assembly.
    I will fulfill my vows in the presence of those who worship you.
  • The afflictedd shall eat and be satisfied;
    those who seek him shall praise the Lord!
    May your hearts live forever!
  • The poor will eat and be satisfied.
    All who seek the LORD will praise him.
    Their hearts will rejoice with everlasting joy.
  • All the ends of the earth shall remember
    and turn to the Lord,
    and all the families of the nations
    shall worship before you.
  • The whole earth will acknowledge the LORD and return to him.
    All the families of the nations will bow down before him.
  • For kingship belongs to the Lord,
    and he rules over the nations.
  • For royal power belongs to the LORD.
    He rules all the nations.
  • All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship;
    before him shall bow all who go down to the dust,
    even the one who could not keep himself alive.
  • Let the rich of the earth feast and worship.
    Bow before him, all who are mortal,
    all whose lives will end as dust.
  • Posterity shall serve him;
    it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation;
  • Our children will also serve him.
    Future generations will hear about the wonders of the Lord.
  • they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn,
    that he has done it.
  • His righteous acts will be told to those not yet born.
    They will hear about everything he has done.
