  • For the choir director: A psalm of Asaph. A song to be sung to the tune “Do Not Destroy!”

    We thank you, O God!
    We give thanks because you are near.
    People everywhere tell of your wonderful deeds.
  • “At the set time that I appoint
    I will judge with equity.
  • God says, “At the time I have planned,
    I will bring justice against the wicked.
  • When the earth totters, and all its inhabitants,
    it is I who keep steady its pillars. Selah
  • When the earth quakes and its people live in turmoil,
    I am the one who keeps its foundations firm.
    Interlude
  • I say to the boastful, ‘Do not boast,’
    and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horn;
  • “I warned the proud, ‘Stop your boasting!’
    I told the wicked, ‘Don’t raise your fists!
  • do not lift up your horn on high,
    or speak with haughty neck.’”
  • Don’t raise your fists in defiance at the heavens
    or speak with such arrogance.’”
  • For not from the east or from the west
    and not from the wilderness comes lifting up,
  • For no one on earth — from east or west,
    or even from the wilderness —
    should raise a defiant fist.a
  • but it is God who executes judgment,
    putting down one and lifting up another.
  • It is God alone who judges;
    he decides who will rise and who will fall.
  • For in the hand of the Lord there is a cup
    with foaming wine, well mixed,
    and he pours out from it,
    and all the wicked of the earth
    shall drain it down to the dregs.
  • For the LORD holds a cup in his hand
    that is full of foaming wine mixed with spices.
    He pours out the wine in judgment,
    and all the wicked must drink it,
    draining it to the dregs.
  • But I will declare it forever;
    I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.
  • But as for me, I will always proclaim what God has done;
    I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.
  • All the horns of the wicked I will cut off,
    but the horns of the righteous shall be lifted up.
  • For God says, “I will break the strength of the wicked,
    but I will increase the power of the godly.”
