Practical Warnings

My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor,
have given your pledge for a stranger,

Мій сину, якщо поручи́вся ти за свого бли́жнього, дав руку свою за чужо́го, —

if you are snared in the words of your mouth,
caught in the words of your mouth,

ти попався до па́стки з-за слів своїх уст, схо́плений ти із-за слів своїх уст!

then do this, my son, and save yourself,
for you have come into the hand of your neighbor:
go, hasten,a and plead urgently with your neighbor.

Учини тоді це, сину мій, та рятуйсь, бо впав ти до рук свого бли́жнього: іди, впади в по́рох, і на ближніх своїх напира́й,

Give your eyes no sleep
and your eyelids no slumber;

4

не дай сну своїм о́чам, і дріма́ння пові́кам своїм,

5

save yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter,b
like a bird from the hand of the fowler.

рятуйся, як се́рна, з руки́, і як птах із руки птахоло́ва!

Go to the ant, O sluggard;
consider her ways, and be wise.

Іди до мурашки, ліню́ху, поглянь на дороги її — й помудрій:

Without having any chief,
officer, or ruler,

нема в неї воло́даря, ані уря́дника, ані прави́теля;

she prepares her bread in summer
and gathers her food in harvest.

How long will you lie there, O sluggard?
When will you arise from your sleep?

Аж доки, ліню́ху, ти будеш виле́жуватись, коли́ ти зо сну свого встанеш?

A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to rest,

Ще трохи поспати, подрімати ще трохи, руки трохи зложи́ти, щоб поле́жати, —

and poverty will come upon you like a robber,
and want like an armed man.

і при́йде, немов волоцюга, твоя незаможність, і зли́дні твої, як озбро́єний муж!

12

A worthless person, a wicked man,
goes about with crooked speech,

Люди́на нікче́мна, чоловік злочи́нний, він ходить з лукавими у́стами,

13

winks with his eyes, signalsc with his feet,
points with his finger,

він морга́є очи́ма своїми, шурга́є своїми нога́ми, знаки́ подає пальцями своїми,

14

with perverted heart devises evil,
continually sowing discord;

14

в його серці лукавство вио́рює зло кожноча́сно, сварки́ розсіва́є, —

15

therefore calamity will come upon him suddenly;
in a moment he will be broken beyond healing.

тому на́гло прихо́дить погибіль його, буде ра́птом побитий — і лі́ку нема!

There are six things that the Lord hates,
seven that are an abomination to him:

Оцих шість ненавидить Господь, а ці сім — то гидо́та душі Його:

17

haughty eyes, a lying tongue,
and hands that shed innocent blood,

очі пишні, брехли́вий язик, і ру́ки, що кров непови́нну ллють,

18

a heart that devises wicked plans,
feet that make haste to run to evil,

18

серце, що пле́кає злочинні думки́, ноги, що сква́пно біжать на лихе,

19

a false witness who breathes out lies,
and one who sows discord among brothers.

сві́док брехливий, що бре́хні роздму́хує, і хто розсіває сварки́ між братів!

20

Warnings Against Adultery

My son, keep your father’s commandment,
and forsake not your mother’s teaching.

Стережи, сину мій, заповідь батька свого́, і не відкидай науки матері своєї!

21

Bind them on your heart always;
tie them around your neck.

Прив'яжи їх на серці своєму наза́вжди, повісь їх на шиї своїй!

22

When you walk, theyd will lead you;
when you lie down, they will watch over you;
and when you awake, they will talk with you.

Вона буде прова́дити тебе у ході́, стерегти́ме тебе, коли будеш лежати, а пробу́дишся — мовити буде до тебе!

For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light,
and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life,

Бо заповідь Божа — світи́льник, а наука — то світло, доро́га ж життя — то навча́льні карта́ння,

24

to preserve you from the evil woman,e
from the smooth tongue of the adulteress.f

щоб тебе стерегти́ від злосли́вої жінки, від обле́сливого язика чужи́нки.

25

Do not desire her beauty in your heart,
and do not let her capture you with her eyelashes;

Не жадай її вро́ди у серці своїм, і тебе хай не ві́зьме своїми пові́ками, —

26

for the price of a prostitute is only a loaf of bread,g
but a married womanh hunts down a precious life.

Бо вартість розпу́сної жінки — то бо́ханець хліба, а жінка заміжня вловлює душу цінну́...

Can a man carry fire next to his chest
and his clothes not be burned?

Чи ві́зьме люди́на огонь на лоно своє, — і о́діж її не згорить?

28

Or can one walk on hot coals
and his feet not be scorched?

Чи буде люди́на ходи́ти по вугі́ллю розпа́леному, і не попа́ляться ноги її?

29

So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife;
none who touches her will go unpunished.

Так і той, хто вчащає до жінки свого ближнього: не буде нека́раним кожен, хто доторкне́ться до неї!

30

People do not despise a thief if he steals
to satisfy his appetite when he is hungry,

Не пого́рджують зло́дієм, якщо він укра́де, щоб рятувати життя своє, коли він голоду́є,

31

but if he is caught, he will pay sevenfold;
he will give all the goods of his house.

та як буде він зна́йдений, — все́меро він відшкоду́є, віддасть все майно свого дому!

32

He who commits adultery lacks sense;
he who does it destroys himself.

Хто чинить пере́люб, не має той розуму, — він знищує душу свою, —

33

He will get wounds and dishonor,
and his disgrace will not be wiped away.

побої та сором він зна́йде, а га́ньба його не зітре́ться,

34

For jealousy makes a man furious,
and he will not spare when he takes revenge.

34

бо за́здрощі — лютість мужчи́ни, і не змилосе́рдиться він у день помсти:

35

He will accept no compensation;
he will refuse though you multiply gifts.

35

він не зверне уваги на жоден твій викуп, і не схоче, коли ти гости́нця прибі́льшиш!
