    The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.
  • Vanityb of vanities, says the Preacher,
    vanity of vanities! All is vanity.
  • “Vanity[a] of vanities,” says the Preacher;
    “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.”
  • What does man gain by all the toil
    at which he toils under the sun?
  • What profit has a man from all his labor
    In which he [b]toils under the sun?
  • A generation goes, and a generation comes,
    but the earth remains forever.
  • One generation passes away, and another generation comes;
    But the earth abides forever.
  • The sun rises, and the sun goes down,
    and hastensc to the place where it rises.

    And [c]hastens to the place where it arose.
  • The wind blows to the south
    and goes around to the north;
    around and around goes the wind,
    and on its circuits the wind returns.

    I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
  • And I applied my heartf to seek and to search out by wisdom all that is done under heaven. It is an unhappy business that God has given to the children of man to be busy with.
  • And I set my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under heaven; this burdensome task God has given to the sons of man, by which they may be [e]exercised.
  • I have seen everything that is done under the sun, and behold, all is vanityg and a striving after wind.h
