There is an evil that I have seen under the sun, and it lies heavy on mankind:

И другое зло я видел под солнцем, и оно часто встречается среди людей:

a man to whom God gives wealth, possessions, and honor, so that he lacks nothing of all that he desires, yet God does not give him power to enjoy them, but a stranger enjoys them. This is vanity;a it is a grievous evil.

Бог дает человеку богатство, имущество и славу, так что у него есть все, чего бы он ни пожелал, но Бог не дает ему пользоваться этим, вместо него пользуется чужой. Это — суета, это — ужасное зло.

If a man fathers a hundred children and lives many years, so that the days of his years are many, but his soul is not satisfied with life’s good things, and he also has no burial, I say that a stillborn child is better off than he.

У человека может быть сотня детей, и он может прожить много лет, но сколько бы он ни прожил, если он не мог насладиться своим счастьем и не был даже погребен, то я сказал бы, что выкидыш счастливее его,

For it comes in vanity and goes in darkness, and in darkness its name is covered.

Moreover, it has not seen the sun or known anything, yet it finds rest rather than he.

Even though he should live a thousand years twice over, yet enjoyb no good — do not all go to the one place?

который не насладился своим счастьем, хоть бы он и прожил две тысячи лет. В итоге они оба пойдут в одно и то же место.

All the toil of man is for his mouth, yet his appetite is not satisfied.c

Все усилия человека, чтобы наполнить свой желудок,
но голод возвращается вновь и вновь.

For what advantage has the wise man over the fool? And what does the poor man have who knows how to conduct himself before the living?

Какое же тогда преимущество у мудрого над глупым,
и что приобретает бедняк,
даже если он знает как вести себя с другими?

Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the appetite: this also is vanity and a striving after wind.

Лучше радоваться тому, что имеешь,
чем желать того, что не имеешь.
И это тоже суета,
это — погоня за ветром.

Whatever has come to be has already been named, and it is known what man is, and that he is not able to dispute with one stronger than he.

Всему, что существует, уже дано имя,10
и что такое человек, уже давно известно.
Он не может препираться с Тем,
Кто сильнее его.

The more words, the more vanity, and what is the advantage to man?

Чем больше слов,
тем меньше смысла,
и какая в этом польза человеку?

For who knows what is good for man while he lives the few days of his vaind life, which he passes like a shadow? For who can tell man what will be after him under the sun?

Ведь кто знает, что хорошо для человека в течение немногих и суетных дней его жизни, которые проходят словно тень? И кто может сказать человеку, что будет после него под солнцем?
