Darby Bible Translation

  • when I would heal Israel,
    the iniquity of Ephraim is revealed,
    and the evil deeds of Samaria,
    for they deal falsely;
    the thief breaks in,
    and the bandits raid outside.
  • Ephraim's Iniquity

    When I would heal Israel, then the iniquity of Ephraim is discovered, and the wickedness of Samaria: for they practise falsehood; and the thief entereth in, [and] the troop of robbers assaileth without.
  • But they do not consider
    that I remember all their evil.
    Now their deeds surround them;
    they are before my face.
  • And they say not in their hearts [that] I remember all their wickedness: now do their own doings encompass them; they are before my face.
  • By their evil they make the king glad,
    and the princes by their treachery.
  • They make the king glad with their wickedness, and the princes with their lies.
  • They are all adulterers;
    they are like a heated oven
    whose baker ceases to stir the fire,
    from the kneading of the dough
    until it is leavened.
  • They all practise adultery, as an oven heated by the baker: he ceaseth from stirring [the fire] after he hath kneaded the dough, until it be leavened.
  • On the day of our king, the princes
    became sick with the heat of wine;
    he stretched out his hand with mockers.
  • In the day of our king, the princes made themselves sick with the heat of wine: he stretched out his hand to scorners.
  • For with hearts like an oven they approach their intrigue;
    all night their anger smolders;
    in the morning it blazes like a flaming fire.
  • For they have applied their heart like an oven to their lying in wait: their baker sleepeth all the night; in the morning it burneth like a flaming fire.
  • All of them are hot as an oven,
    and they devour their rulers.
    All their kings have fallen,
    and none of them calls upon me.
  • They are all hot as an oven, and devour their judges; all their kings are fallen: there is none among them that calleth unto me.
  • Ephraim mixes himself with the peoples;
    Ephraim is a cake not turned.
  • Ephraim, he mixeth himself with the peoples; Ephraim is a cake not turned.
  • Strangers devour his strength,
    and he knows it not;
    gray hairs are sprinkled upon him,
    and he knows it not.
  • Strangers have devoured his strength, and he knoweth [it] not; yea, gray hairs are here and there upon him, and he knoweth [it] not.
  • The pride of Israel testifies to his face;a
    yet they do not return to the Lord their God,
    nor seek him, for all this.
  • And the pride of Israel testifieth to his face; and they do not return to Jehovah their God, nor seek him for all this.
  • Ephraim is like a dove,
    silly and without sense,
    calling to Egypt, going to Assyria.
  • And Ephraim is become like a silly dove without understanding: they call to Egypt, they go to Assyria.
  • As they go, I will spread over them my net;
    I will bring them down like birds of the heavens;
    I will discipline them according to the report made to their congregation.
  • When they go, I will spread my net upon them; I will bring them down as the fowl of the heavens; I will chastise them, according as their assembly hath heard.
  • Woe to them, for they have strayed from me!
    Destruction to them, for they have rebelled against me!
    I would redeem them,
    but they speak lies against me.
  • Woe unto them! for they have wandered from me; destruction unto them! for they have transgressed against me. And I would redeem them; but they speak lies against me.
  • They do not cry to me from the heart,
    but they wail upon their beds;
    for grain and wine they gash themselves;
    they rebel against me.
  • And they cried not unto me in their heart, when they howled upon their beds; they assemble themselves for corn and new wine; they have turned aside from me.
  • Although I trained and strengthened their arms,
    yet they devise evil against me.
  • I have indeed trained, I have strengthened their arms, but they imagine mischief against me.
  • They return, but not upward;b
    they are like a treacherous bow;
    their princes shall fall by the sword
    because of the insolence of their tongue.
    This shall be their derision in the land of Egypt.
  • They return, [but] not to the [Most] High: they are like a deceitful bow. Their princes shall fall by the sword for the rage of their tongue: this shall be their derision in the land of Egypt.
