New Living Translation

  • Laws for Sin Offerings

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
  • Procedures for the Sin Offering

Then the LORD said to Moses,
  • “Speak to the people of Israel, saying, If anyone sins unintentionallya in any of the Lord’s commandments about things not to be done, and does any one of them,
  • “Give the following instructions to the people of Israel. This is how you are to deal with those who sin unintentionally by doing anything that violates one of the LORD’s commands.
  • if it is the anointed priest who sins, thus bringing guilt on the people, then he shall offer for the sin that he has committed a bull from the herd without blemish to the Lord for a sin offering.
  • “If the high priesta sins, bringing guilt upon the entire community, he must give a sin offering for the sin he has committed. He must present to the LORD a young bull with no defects.
  • He shall bring the bull to the entrance of the tent of meeting before the Lord and lay his hand on the head of the bull and kill the bull before the Lord.
  • He must bring the bull to the LORD at the entrance of the Tabernacle,b lay his hand on the bull’s head, and slaughter it before the LORD.
  • And the anointed priest shall take some of the blood of the bull and bring it into the tent of meeting,
  • The high priest will then take some of the bull’s blood into the Tabernacle,
  • and the priest shall dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle part of the blood seven times before the Lord in front of the veil of the sanctuary.
  • dip his finger in the blood, and sprinkle it seven times before the LORD in front of the inner curtain of the sanctuary.
  • And the priest shall put some of the blood on the horns of the altar of fragrant incense before the Lord that is in the tent of meeting, and all the rest of the blood of the bull he shall pour out at the base of the altar of burnt offering that is at the entrance of the tent of meeting.
  • The priest will then put some of the blood on the horns of the altar for fragrant incense that stands in the LORD’s presence inside the Tabernacle. He will pour out the rest of the bull’s blood at the base of the altar for burnt offerings at the entrance of the Tabernacle.
  • And all the fat of the bull of the sin offering he shall remove from it, the fat that covers the entrails and all the fat that is on the entrails
  • Then the priest must remove all the fat of the bull to be offered as a sin offering. This includes all the fat around the internal organs,
  • and the two kidneys with the fat that is on them at the loins and the long lobe of the liver that he shall remove with the kidneys
  • the two kidneys and the fat around them near the loins, and the long lobe of the liver. He must remove these along with the kidneys,
  • (just as these are taken from the ox of the sacrifice of the peace offerings); and the priest shall burn them on the altar of burnt offering.
  • just as he does with cattle offered as a peace offering, and burn them on the altar of burnt offerings.
  • But the skin of the bull and all its flesh, with its head, its legs, its entrails, and its dung —
  • But he must take whatever is left of the bull — its hide, meat, head, legs, internal organs, and dung —
  • all the rest of the bull — he shall carry outside the camp to a clean place, to the ash heap, and shall burn it up on a fire of wood. On the ash heap it shall be burned up.
  • and carry it away to a place outside the camp that is ceremonially clean, the place where the ashes are dumped. There, on the ash heap, he will burn it on a wood fire.
  • “If the whole congregation of Israel sins unintentionallyb and the thing is hidden from the eyes of the assembly, and they do any one of the things that by the Lord’s commandments ought not to be done, and they realize their guilt,c
  • “If the entire Israelite community sins by violating one of the LORD’s commands, but the people don’t realize it, they are still guilty.
  • when the sin which they have committed becomes known, the assembly shall offer a bull from the herd for a sin offering and bring it in front of the tent of meeting.
  • When they become aware of their sin, the people must bring a young bull as an offering for their sin and present it before the Tabernacle.
  • And the elders of the congregation shall lay their hands on the head of the bull before the Lord, and the bull shall be killed before the Lord.
  • The elders of the community must then lay their hands on the bull’s head and slaughter it before the LORD.
  • Then the anointed priest shall bring some of the blood of the bull into the tent of meeting,
  • The high priest will then take some of the bull’s blood into the Tabernacle,
  • and the priest shall dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle it seven times before the Lord in front of the veil.
  • dip his finger in the blood, and sprinkle it seven times before the LORD in front of the inner curtain.
  • And he shall put some of the blood on the horns of the altar that is in the tent of meeting before the Lord, and the rest of the blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar of burnt offering that is at the entrance of the tent of meeting.
  • He will then put some of the blood on the horns of the altar for fragrant incense that stands in the LORD’s presence inside the Tabernacle. He will pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar for burnt offerings at the entrance of the Tabernacle.
  • And all its fat he shall take from it and burn on the altar.
  • Then the priest must remove all the animal’s fat and burn it on the altar,
  • Thus shall he do with the bull. As he did with the bull of the sin offering, so shall he do with this. And the priest shall make atonement for them, and they shall be forgiven.
  • just as he does with the bull offered as a sin offering for the high priest. Through this process, the priest will purify the people, making them right with the LORD,c and they will be forgiven.
  • And he shall carry the bull outside the camp and burn it up as he burned the first bull; it is the sin offering for the assembly.
  • Then the priest must take what is left of the bull and carry it outside the camp and burn it there, just as is done with the sin offering for the high priest. This offering is for the sin of the entire congregation of Israel.
  • “When a leader sins, doing unintentionally any one of all the things that by the commandments of the Lord his God ought not to be done, and realizes his guilt,
  • “If one of Israel’s leaders sins by violating one of the commands of the LORD his God but doesn’t realize it, he is still guilty.
  • or the sin which he has committed is made known to him, he shall bring as his offering a goat, a male without blemish,
  • When he becomes aware of his sin, he must bring as his offering a male goat with no defects.
  • and shall lay his hand on the head of the goat and kill it in the place where they kill the burnt offering before the Lord; it is a sin offering.
  • He must lay his hand on the goat’s head and slaughter it at the place where burnt offerings are slaughtered before the LORD. This is an offering for his sin.
  • Then the priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and pour out the rest of its blood at the base of the altar of burnt offering.
  • Then the priest will dip his finger in the blood of the sin offering and put it on the horns of the altar for burnt offerings. He will pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar.
  • And all its fat he shall burn on the altar, like the fat of the sacrifice of peace offerings. So the priest shall make atonement for him for his sin, and he shall be forgiven.
  • Then he must burn all the goat’s fat on the altar, just as he does with the peace offering. Through this process, the priest will purify the leader from his sin, making him right with the LORD, and he will be forgiven.
  • “If anyone of the common people sins unintentionally in doing any one of the things that by the Lord’s commandments ought not to be done, and realizes his guilt,
  • “If any of the common people sin by violating one of the LORD’s commands, but they don’t realize it, they are still guilty.
  • or the sin which he has committed is made known to him, he shall bring for his offering a goat, a female without blemish, for his sin which he has committed.
  • When they become aware of their sin, they must bring as an offering for their sin a female goat with no defects.
  • And he shall lay his hand on the head of the sin offering and kill the sin offering in the place of burnt offering.
  • They must lay a hand on the head of the sin offering and slaughter it at the place where burnt offerings are slaughtered.
  • And the priest shall take some of its blood with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and pour out all the rest of its blood at the base of the altar.
  • Then the priest will dip his finger in the blood and put it on the horns of the altar for burnt offerings. He will pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar.
  • And all its fat he shall remove, as the fat is removed from the peace offerings, and the priest shall burn it on the altar for a pleasing aroma to the Lord. And the priest shall make atonement for him, and he shall be forgiven.
  • Then he must remove all the goat’s fat, just as he does with the fat of the peace offering. He will burn the fat on the altar, and it will be a pleasing aroma to the LORD. Through this process, the priest will purify the people, making them right with the LORD, and they will be forgiven.
  • “If he brings a lamb as his offering for a sin offering, he shall bring a female without blemish
  • “If the people bring a sheep as their sin offering, it must be a female with no defects.
  • and lay his hand on the head of the sin offering and kill it for a sin offering in the place where they kill the burnt offering.
  • They must lay a hand on the head of the sin offering and slaughter it at the place where burnt offerings are slaughtered.
  • Then the priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and pour out all the rest of its blood at the base of the altar.
  • Then the priest will dip his finger in the blood of the sin offering and put it on the horns of the altar for burnt offerings. He will pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar.
  • And all its fat he shall remove as the fat of the lamb is removed from the sacrifice of peace offerings, and the priest shall burn it on the altar, on top of the Lord’s food offerings. And the priest shall make atonement for him for the sin which he has committed, and he shall be forgiven.
  • Then he must remove all the sheep’s fat, just as he does with the fat of a sheep presented as a peace offering. He will burn the fat on the altar on top of the special gifts presented to the LORD. Through this process, the priest will purify the people from their sin, making them right with the LORD, and they will be forgiven.
