The Coming Day of Bitter Mourning

This is what the Lord God showed me: behold, a basket of summer fruit.

Господь Бог учинив, що я бачив таке: Ось кіш доспі́лих плоді́в.

And he said, “Amos, what do you see?” And I said, “A basket of summer fruit.” Then the Lord said to me,
“The enda has come upon my people Israel;
I will never again pass by them.

І сказав Він: „Що́ бачиш, Амо́се?“ А я відказав: „Кіш доспілих плоді́в“. І промовив до мене Господь: „Доспі́в кінець Моє́му наро́дові Ізраїлеві, — уже більше йому не прощу́!

The songs of the templeb shall become wailingsc in that day,”
declares the Lord God.
“So many dead bodies!”
“They are thrown everywhere!”
“Silence!”

І обе́рнуться пісні в пала́тах на зойк того дня, — говорить Господь Бог: буде тру́пів багато, — бо во́рог на кожному місці наки́дає їх!

Hear this, you who trample on the needy
and bring the poor of the land to an end,

Послухайте це, ви, що то́пчете бідного, і що пра́гнете ви́нищити всіх убогих з землі,

saying, “When will the new moon be over,
that we may sell grain?
And the Sabbath,
that we may offer wheat for sale,
that we may make the ephah small and the shekeld great
and deal deceitfully with false balances,

кажучи: Коли то мине новомі́сяччя, — щоб нам збіжжя прода́ти? і субота, — щоб нам відчини́ти збіже́ві комо́ри! Щоб зменши́ти ефу́, і щоб ше́кля побі́льшити, і щоб викривля́ти обманну вагу́,

that we may buy the poor for silver
and the needy for a pair of sandals
and sell the chaff of the wheat?”

щоб купува́ти за срі́бло нужде́нних, а вбогого за взуття́, і попро́дати по́слід збіже́вий?

The Lord has sworn by the pride of Jacob:
“Surely I will never forget any of their deeds.

Госпо́дь присягнув славою Якова: Не забуду ніко́ли усіх їхніх вчинків!

Shall not the land tremble on this account,
and everyone mourn who dwells in it,
and all of it rise like the Nile,
and be tossed about and sink again, like the Nile of Egypt?”

Чи не затрясе́ться від цього земля, і всі мешка́нці її не впадуть у жало́бу? Вся вона захвилю́ється, мов та Ріка́, і бурхливо попли́не й обни́зиться знов, немов рі́чка Єгипту.

“And on that day,” declares the Lord God,
“I will make the sun go down at noon
and darken the earth in broad daylight.

І станеться в день той, — говорить Господь Бог, — і вчиню́ захід сонця опі́вдні, і для землі серед світлого дня воно сте́мніє.

10

I will turn your feasts into mourning
and all your songs into lamentation;
I will bring sackcloth on every waist
and baldness on every head;
I will make it like the mourning for an only son
and the end of it like a bitter day.

І оберну́ ваші свята в жало́бу, а всі ваші пісні́ — в голосі́ння, і на всі сте́гна спрова́джу вере́ту, а на всякую го́лову ли́сину, і вчиню́ це, немов та жало́ба по одинако́ві, кінець же отого, — немов гірки́й день!

“Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord God,
“when I will send a famine on the land —
not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water,
but of hearing the words of the Lord.

Ось дні настаю́ть, — говорить Господь Бог, — і голод пошлю Я на землю, — не голод на хліб, і не спра́гу на во́ду, але спрагу почути Господні слова́!

12

They shall wander from sea to sea,
and from north to east;
they shall run to and fro, to seek the word of the Lord,
but they shall not find it.

І бу́дуть ходити від моря до моря, і з пі́вночі до сходу блука́тимуть, щоб знайти слово Господа, — та не зна́йдуть його́!

13

“In that day the lovely virgins and the young men
shall faint for thirst.

Того дня будуть мліти від спра́ги вродли́ві дівчата та хлопці,

14

Those who swear by the Guilt of Samaria,
and say, ‘As your god lives, O Dan,’
and, ‘As the Way of Beersheba lives,’
they shall fall, and never rise again.”

що кляну́ться гріхом самарі́йським та кажуть: Як живий твій Бог, Дане, і як жива дорога до Беер-Шеви! Та вони всі попа́дають, і більше не встануть
