New Living Translation

  • Judgment on Israel’s Enemies

    The oracle of the word of the Lord is against the land of Hadrach
    and Damascus is its resting place.
    For the Lord has an eye on mankind
    and on all the tribes of Israel,a
  • Judgment against Israel’s Enemies

    This is the messagea from the LORD against the land of Aramb and the city of Damascus, for the eyes of humanity, including all the tribes of Israel, are on the LORD.
  • and on Hamath also, which borders on it,
    Tyre and Sidon, though they are very wise.
  • Doom is certain for Hamath,
    near Damascus,
    and for the cities of Tyre and Sidon,
    though they are so clever.
  • Tyre has built herself a rampart
    and heaped up silver like dust,
    and fine gold like the mud of the streets.
  • Tyre has built a strong fortress
    and has made silver and gold
    as plentiful as dust in the streets!
  • But behold, the Lord will strip her of her possessions
    and strike down her power on the sea,
    and she shall be devoured by fire.
  • But now the Lord will strip away Tyre’s possessions
    and hurl its fortifications into the sea,
    and it will be burned to the ground.
  • Ashkelon shall see it, and be afraid;
    Gaza too, and shall writhe in anguish;
    Ekron also, because its hopes are confounded.
    The king shall perish from Gaza;
    Ashkelon shall be uninhabited;
  • The city of Ashkelon will see Tyre fall
    and will be filled with fear.
    Gaza will shake with terror,
    as will Ekron, for their hopes will be dashed.
    Gaza’s king will be killed,
    and Ashkelon will be deserted.
  • a mixed peopleb shall dwell in Ashdod,
    and I will cut off the pride of Philistia.
  • Foreigners will occupy the city of Ashdod.
    I will destroy the pride of the Philistines.
  • I will take away its blood from its mouth,
    and its abominations from between its teeth;
    it too shall be a remnant for our God;
    it shall be like a clan in Judah,
    and Ekron shall be like the Jebusites.
  • I will grab the bloody meat from their mouths
    and snatch the detestable sacrifices from their teeth.
    Then the surviving Philistines will worship our God
    and become like a clan in Judah.c
    The Philistines of Ekron will join my people,
    as the ancient Jebusites once did.
  • Then I will encamp at my house as a guard,
    so that none shall march to and fro;
    no oppressor shall again march over them,
    for now I see with my own eyes.
  • I will guard my Temple
    and protect it from invading armies.
    I am watching closely to ensure
    that no more foreign oppressors overrun my people’s land.
    Zion’s Coming King
  • The Coming King of Zion

    Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
    Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!
    Behold, your king is coming to you;
    righteous and having salvation is he,
    humble and mounted on a donkey,
    on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
  • Rejoice, O people of Zion!d
    Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem!
    Look, your king is coming to you.
    He is righteous and victorious,e
    yet he is humble, riding on a donkey —
    riding on a donkey’s colt.
  • I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim
    and the war horse from Jerusalem;
    and the battle bow shall be cut off,
    and he shall speak peace to the nations;
    his rule shall be from sea to sea,
    and from the Riverc to the ends of the earth.
  • I will remove the battle chariots from Israelf
    and the warhorses from Jerusalem.
    I will destroy all the weapons used in battle,
    and your king will bring peace to the nations.
    His realm will stretch from sea to sea
    and from the Euphrates Riverg to the ends of the earth.h
  • As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you,
    I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit.
  • Because of the covenant I made with you,
    sealed with blood,
    I will free your prisoners
    from death in a waterless dungeon.
  • Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope;
    today I declare that I will restore to you double.
  • Come back to the place of safety,
    all you prisoners who still have hope!
    I promise this very day
    that I will repay two blessings for each of your troubles.
  • For I have bent Judah as my bow;
    I have made Ephraim its arrow.
    I will stir up your sons, O Zion,
    against your sons, O Greece,
    and wield you like a warrior’s sword.
  • Judah is my bow,
    and Israel is my arrow.
    Jerusalemi is my sword,
    and like a warrior, I will brandish it against the Greeks.j
  • The Lord Will Save His People

    Then the Lord will appear over them,
    and his arrow will go forth like lightning;
    the Lord God will sound the trumpet
    and will march forth in the whirlwinds of the south.
  • The LORD will appear above his people;
    his arrows will fly like lightning!
    The Sovereign LORD will sound the ram’s horn
    and attack like a whirlwind from the southern desert.
  • The Lord of hosts will protect them,
    and they shall devour, and tread down the sling stones,
    and they shall drink and roar as if drunk with wine,
    and be full like a bowl,
    drenched like the corners of the altar.
  • The LORD of Heaven’s Armies will protect his people,
    and they will defeat their enemies by hurling great stones.
    They will shout in battle as though drunk with wine.
    They will be filled with blood like a bowl,
    drenched with blood like the corners of the altar.
  • On that day the Lord their God will save them,
    as the flock of his people;
    for like the jewels of a crown
    they shall shine on his land.
  • On that day the LORD their God will rescue his people,
    just as a shepherd rescues his sheep.
    They will sparkle in his land
    like jewels in a crown.
  • For how great is his goodness, and how great his beauty!
    Grain shall make the young men flourish,
    and new wine the young women.
  • How wonderful and beautiful they will be!
    The young men will thrive on abundant grain,
    and the young women will flourish on new wine.
