    The Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying,
  • The Census of Israel's Warriors

    And Jehovah spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai in the tent of meeting, on the first of the second month, in the second year after their departure from the land of Egypt, saying,
  • “Take a census of all the congregation of the people of Israel, by clans, by fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, every male, head by head.
  • Take the sum of the whole assembly of the children of Israel, after their families, according to their fathers' houses, by the number of the names, every male, according to their polls;
  • From twenty years old and upward, all in Israel who are able to go to war, you and Aaron shall list them, company by company.
  • from twenty years and upward, all that go forth to military service in Israel: ye shall number them according to their hosts, thou and Aaron.
  • And there shall be with you a man from each tribe, each man being the head of the house of his fathers.
  • And with you there shall be a man for every tribe, a man who is the head of his father's house.
  • And these are the names of the men who shall assist you. From Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur;
  • The Princes of the Tribes

    And these are the names of the men that shall stand with you: for Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur;
  • from Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai;
  • for Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai;
  • from Judah, Nahshon the son of Amminadab;
  • for Judah, Nahshon the son of Amminadab;
  • from Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar;
  • for Issachar, Nethaneel the son of Zuar;
  • from Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon;
  • for Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon;
  • from the sons of Joseph, from Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud, and from Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur;
  • for the children of Joseph: for Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud; for Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur;
  • from Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni;
  • for Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni;
  • from Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai;
  • for Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai;
  • from Asher, Pagiel the son of Ochran;
  • for Asher, Pagiel the son of Ocran;
  • from Gad, Eliasaph the son of Deuel;
  • for Gad, Eliasaph the son of Deuel;
  • from Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan.”
  • for Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan.
  • These were the ones chosen from the congregation, the chiefs of their ancestral tribes, the heads of the clans of Israel.
  • These were those summoned of the assembly, princes of the tribes of their fathers, the heads of the thousands of Israel.
  • Moses and Aaron took these men who had been named,

    And Moses and Aaron took these men who are expressed by their names,
  • and on the first day of the second month, they assembled the whole congregation together, who registered themselves by clans, by fathers’ houses, according to the number of names from twenty years old and upward, head by head,
  • and gathered the whole assembly together on the first of the second month. And they declared their pedigrees after their families, according to their fathers' houses, by the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, according to their polls.
  • as the Lord commanded Moses. So he listed them in the wilderness of Sinai.

  • The people of Reuben, Israel’s firstborn, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war:
  • And the sons of Reuben, Israel's eldest son, their generations, after their families, according to their fathers' houses, by the number of the names, according to their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that went forth to military service:
  • those listed of the tribe of Reuben were 46,500.
  • those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Reuben, were forty-six thousand five hundred.
  • Of the people of Simeon, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, those of them who were listed, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war:
  • Of the sons of Simeon: their generations, after their families, according to their fathers' houses, those that were numbered of them, by the number of the names, according to their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that went forth to military service:
  • those listed of the tribe of Simeon were 59,300.
  • those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Simeon, were fifty-nine thousand three hundred.
  • Of the people of Gad, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war:
  • Of the sons of Gad: their generations, after their families, according to their fathers' houses, by the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that went forth to military service:
  • those listed of the tribe of Gad were 45,650.
  • those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Gad, were forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty.
  • Of the people of Judah, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:
  • Of the sons of Judah: their generations, after their families, according to their fathers' houses, by the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that went forth to military service:
  • those listed of the tribe of Judah were 74,600.
  • those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Judah, were seventy-four thousand six hundred.
  • Of the people of Issachar, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:
  • Of the sons of Issachar: their generations, after their families, according to their fathers' houses, by the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that went forth to military service:
  • those listed of the tribe of Issachar were 54,400.
  • those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Issachar, were fifty-four thousand four hundred.
  • Of the people of Zebulun, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:
  • Of the sons of Zebulun: their generations, after their families, according to their fathers' houses, by the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that went forth to military service:
  • those listed of the tribe of Zebulun were 57,400.
  • those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Zebulun, were fifty-seven thousand four hundred.
  • Of the people of Joseph, namely, of the people of Ephraim, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:
  • Of the sons of Joseph: of the children of Ephraim: their generations, after their families, according to their fathers' houses, by the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that went forth to military service:
  • those listed of the tribe of Ephraim were 40,500.
  • those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Ephraim, were forty thousand five hundred.
  • Of the people of Manasseh, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:
  • Of the children of Manasseh: their generations, after their families, according to their fathers' houses, by the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that went forth to military service:
  • those listed of the tribe of Manasseh were 32,200.
  • those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Manasseh, were thirty-two thousand two hundred.
  • Of the people of Benjamin, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:
  • Of the sons of Benjamin: their generations, after their families, according to their fathers' houses, by the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that went forth to military service:
  • those listed of the tribe of Benjamin were 35,400.
  • those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Benjamin, were thirty-five thousand four hundred.
  • Of the people of Dan, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:
  • Of the sons of Dan: their generations, after their families, according to their fathers' houses, by the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that went forth to military service:
  • those listed of the tribe of Dan were 62,700.
  • those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Dan, were sixty-two thousand seven hundred.
  • Of the people of Asher, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:
  • Of the sons of Asher: their generations, after their families, according to their fathers' houses, by the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that went forth to military service:
  • those listed of the tribe of Asher were 41,500.
  • those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Asher, were forty-one thousand five hundred.
  • Of the people of Naphtali, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war:
  • Of the sons of Naphtali: their generations, after their families, according to their fathers' houses, by the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that went forth to military service:
  • those listed of the tribe of Naphtali were 53,400.
  • those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Naphtali, were fifty-three thousand four hundred.
  • These are those who were listed, whom Moses and Aaron listed with the help of the chiefs of Israel, twelve men, each representing his fathers’ house.
  • These are those that were numbered, whom Moses and Aaron numbered, and the princes of Israel, the twelve men: each one was for the house of his fathers.
  • So all those listed of the people of Israel, by their fathers’ houses, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war in Israel —
  • And all those that were numbered of the children of Israel, according to their fathers' houses, from twenty years old and upward, all that went forth to military service in Israel,
  • all those listed were 603,550.
  • all they that were numbered were six hundred and three thousand five hundred and fifty.

    But the Levites were not listed along with them by their ancestral tribe.

  • For the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
  • For Jehovah had spoken to Moses, saying,
  • “Only the tribe of Levi you shall not list, and you shall not take a census of them among the people of Israel.
  • Only thou shalt not number the tribe of Levi, neither take the sum of them among the children of Israel.
  • But appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, and over all its furnishings, and over all that belongs to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings, and they shall take care of it and shall camp around the tabernacle.
  • But thou, appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of testimony, and over all the vessels thereof, and over all things that belong to it: they shall bear the tabernacle, and all its vessels; and they shall serve it, and round about the tabernacle shall they encamp;
  • When the tabernacle is to set out, the Levites shall take it down, and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up. And if any outsider comes near, he shall be put to death.
  • and when the tabernacle setteth forward, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle encampeth, the Levites shall set it up; and the stranger that cometh near shall be put to death.
  • The people of Israel shall pitch their tents by their companies, each man in his own camp and each man by his own standard.
  • And the children of Israel shall encamp every man in his camp, and every man by his own standard, according to their hosts;
  • But the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that there may be no wrath on the congregation of the people of Israel. And the Levites shall keep guard over the tabernacle of the testimony.”
  • but the Levites shall encamp round about the tabernacle of testimony, that there come not wrath upon the assembly of the children of Israel; and the Levites shall keep the charge of the tabernacle of testimony.
  • Thus did the people of Israel; they did according to all that the Lord commanded Moses.
  • And the children of Israel did so; according to all that Jehovah had commanded Moses, so did they.
