Reuben and Gad Settle in Gilead

Now the people of Reuben and the people of Gad had a very great number of livestock. And they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, and behold, the place was a place for livestock.

А в Руви́мових синів та в синів Ґа́дових були́ великі стада́, дуже числе́нні. І побачили вони край Язерський та край Ґілеадський, а ото це місце — місце добре для худоби.

So the people of Gad and the people of Reuben came and said to Moses and to Eleazar the priest and to the chiefs of the congregation,

І прийшли Ґадові сини та сини Рувимові, та й сказали до Мойсея й до священика Елеазара та до громадських начальників, говорячи:

“Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon,

„Аторот, і Дівон, і Язер, і Німра, і Хешбон, і Ел'але і Севам, і Нево, і Беон, —

the land that the Lord struck down before the congregation of Israel, is a land for livestock, and your servants have livestock.”

та земля, що Господь побив був перед Ізра́їлевою громадою, — вона земля добра для худоби, а в твоїх рабів є худо́ба“.

And they said, “If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for a possession. Do not take us across the Jordan.”

І сказали вони: „Якщо ми знайшли ласку в очах твоїх, то нехай да́но буде ту землю твоїм рабам на володіння. Не перепроваджуй нас через Йорда́н!“

But Moses said to the people of Gad and to the people of Reuben, “Shall your brothers go to the war while you sit here?

І сказав Мойсей до Ґадових синів та до синів Рувимових: „Чи брати ваші пі́дуть на війну́, а ви будете тут сидіти?

7

Why will you discourage the heart of the people of Israel from going over into the land that the Lord has given them?

7

І для чого ви стримуєте серце Ізраїлевих синів від перехо́ду до того кра́ю, що дав їм Господь?

8

Your fathers did this, when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land.

8

Так зробили були́ ваші батьки́, коли я посилав їх із Кадеш-Барнеа побачити той край.

For when they went up to the Valley of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the people of Israel from going into the land that the Lord had given them.

9

І ввійшли вони в Ешкольську долину, і побачили були той край, — і стримали серце Ізраїлевих синів, щоб не вхо́дити до того кра́ю, що дав їм Господь.

10

And the Lord’s anger was kindled on that day, and he swore, saying,

10

І запалився Господній гнів того дня, і присягнув Він, говорячи:

11

‘Surely none of the men who came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land that I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, because they have not wholly followed me,

11

„Поправді кажу́, — не побачать ці люди, що виходять з Єгипту, від віку двадцяти́ літ і вище, тієї землі, що Я присягнув був Авраамові, Ісакові та Якову, бо вони не виконували наказів Моїх,

12

none except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua the son of Nun, for they have wholly followed the Lord.’

окрім Калева, Єфуннеєвого сина, кеніззеянина, та Ісуса, сина Нави́нового, бо вони вико́нували накази за Господом.

13

And the Lord’s anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation that had done evil in the sight of the Lord was gone.

13

І запалився був гнів Господній на Ізраїля, і Він зробив, що вони ходили по пустині сорок літ, аж поки не скінчи́лося все те покоління, що робило зло в Господніх оча́х“.

14

And behold, you have risen in your fathers’ place, a brood of sinful men, to increase still more the fierce anger of the Lord against Israel!

А оце стали ви замість ваших батьків, як наща́дки грішних людей, щоб збільши́ти ще палю́чий гнів Господній на Ізраїля.

15

For if you turn away from following him, he will again abandon them in the wilderness, and you will destroy all this people.”

15

Бо як ви відве́рнетесь від Нього, то Він ще далі триматиме його в пустині, і ви спричи́ните згубу всьому цьому наро́дові“.

16

Then they came near to him and said, “We will build sheepfolds here for our livestock, and cities for our little ones,

А вони підійшли до нього та й сказали: „Ми побудуємо тут коша́ри для нашої худоби та міста́ для наших дітей,

17

but we will take up arms, ready to go before the people of Israel, until we have brought them to their place. And our little ones shall live in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.

17

а ми самі узбро́їмося, готові до бо́ю перед Ізраїлевими синами, аж поки не введе́мо їх до їхнього місця. А діти наші осядуть по тверди́нних містах, охороняючи себе перед ме́шканцями цієї землі.

18

We will not return to our homes until each of the people of Israel has gained his inheritance.

18

Ми не ве́рнемось до наших домів, аж поки Ізраїлеві сини не заволодіють кожен спа́дком своїм.

19

For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance has come to us on this side of the Jordan to the east.”

19

Бо ми не бу́демо володіти з ними по той бік Йорда́ну й далі, бо прийшла нам наша спа́дщина з цього боку Йорда́ну на схід“.

20

So Moses said to them, “If you will do this, if you will take up arms to go before the Lord for the war,

І сказав їм Мойсей: „Якщо ви зробите цю річ, якщо ви узбро́їтесь на війну перед Господнім лицем,

21

and every armed man of you will pass over the Jordan before the Lord, until he has driven out his enemies from before him

21

і пере́йде кожен ваш узбро́єний Йорда́н перед Господнім лицем, аж поки Він не вижене ворогів Своїх перед Собою,

22

and the land is subdued before the Lord; then after that you shall return and be free of obligation to the Lord and to Israel, and this land shall be your possession before the Lord.

22

то буде здобутий той край перед Господнім лицем, і ви потому ве́рнетеся, і будете невинні перед Господом та перед Ізраїлем. І буде вам цей край на володіння перед Господнім лицем.

23

But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the Lord, and be sure your sin will find you out.

23

А якщо не зробите так, то ви згрішили Господе́ві, і знайте, що ваш гріх знайде вас!

24

Build cities for your little ones and folds for your sheep, and do what you have promised.”

24

Побудуйте собі міста для ваших дітей, та коша́ри для ваших ота́р. А що вийшло з ваших уст, те зробі́ть“.

25

And the people of Gad and the people of Reuben said to Moses, “Your servants will do as my lord commands.

25

І сказали Ґадові сини та сини Руви́мові до Мойсея, говорячи: „Раби твої зро́блять, як пан наш приказує.

26

Our little ones, our wives, our livestock, and all our cattle shall remain there in the cities of Gilead,

26

Діти наші, жінки́ наші, ста́до наше та вся наша худоба бу́дуть там, у ґілеадських міста́х.

27

but your servants will pass over, every man who is armed for war, before the Lord to battle, as my lord orders.”

27

А раби твої пере́йдуть, кожен військо́вий озбро́єний, перед Господнім лицем на війну, як пан наш наказує“.

28

So Moses gave command concerning them to Eleazar the priest and to Joshua the son of Nun and to the heads of the fathers’ houses of the tribes of the people of Israel.

28

І Мойсей наказав про них священикові Елеазарові й Ісусові, синові Нави́новому, та го́ловам ба́тьківських домів племен Ізраїлевих синів.

29

And Moses said to them, “If the people of Gad and the people of Reuben, every man who is armed to battle before the Lord, will pass with you over the Jordan and the land shall be subdued before you, then you shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession.

29

І сказав Мойсей до них: „Якщо Ґадові сини та сини Рувимові пере́йдуть із вами Йорда́н, кожен озбро́єний на війну перед лицем Господнім, і буде здобу́тий край перед вами, то дасте їм ґілеадський край на володіння.

30

However, if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan.”

30

А якщо вони не пере́йдуть з вами озбро́єні, то отримають володіння серед вас в ханаанському кра́ї“.

31

And the people of Gad and the people of Reuben answered, “What the Lord has said to your servants, we will do.

31

І відповіли Ґадові сини та сини Рувимові, говорячи: „Що говорив Господь до твоїх рабів, так зро́бимо.

32

We will pass over armed before the Lord into the land of Canaan, and the possession of our inheritance shall remain with us beyond the Jordan.”

32

Ми пере́йдемо озбро́єні перед Господнім лицем до ханаанського кра́ю, а з нами буде наше володіння по цей бік Йорда́ну“.

33

And Moses gave to them, to the people of Gad and to the people of Reuben and to the half-tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land and its cities with their territories, the cities of the land throughout the country.

І Мойсей дав їм, Ґадовим синам і синам Рувимовим та половині пле́мені Манасії, Йо́сипового сина, царство Сігона, царя аморейського, і царство Оґа, царя башаньского, той край по містах його, у границях міст того кра́ю навко́ло.

And the people of Gad built Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,

І збудували Ґадові сини Дівон, і Атарот, і Ароер,

35

Atroth-shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,

35

і Атарот Шофан, і Язер, і Йоґбегу,

36

Beth-nimrah and Beth-haran, fortified cities, and folds for sheep.

36

і Бет-Німру, і Бет-Гаран, тверди́нні міста та коша́ри для ота́ри.

37

And the people of Reuben built Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,

37

А Рувимові сини збудували: Хешбон, і Ел'але, і Кір'ятаїм,

38

Nebo, and Baal-meon (their names were changed), and Sibmah. And they gave other names to the cities that they built.

38

і Нево, і Баал-Меон, зміненоіменні, і Сивму, і назвали йменнями міста́, що вони збудували.

39

And the sons of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead and captured it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were in it.

39

І пішли сини Махіра, сина Манасії, до Ґілеаду, та й здобули́ його і позбавили спа́дщини амореянина, що в ньому.

40

And Moses gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh, and he settled in it.

40

І дав Мойсей Ґілеад Махірові, синові Манасії, і той осів у ньому.

41

And Jair the son of Manasseh went and captured their villages, and called them Havvoth-jair.a

41

А Яір, син Манасіїн, пішов і здобув їхні се́ла, та й назвав їх: Яірові села.

42

And Nobah went and captured Kenath and its villages, and called it Nobah, after his own name.

42

А Новах пішов та й здобув Кенат та залежні від нього міста, і назвав його своїм ім'я́м: Новах.
