John the Baptist Prepares the Way

In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea,

Тими ж днями приходить Іван Хреститель проповідувати в Юдейській пустелі

“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”a

і каже: Покайтеся, бо наблизилося Царство Небесне!

For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said,
“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
‘Prepareb the way of the Lord;
make his paths straight.’”

Він є тим, про кого говорив пророк Ісая, промовляючи: Голос волаючого в пустелі: Приготуйте дорогу Господу, вирівняйте стежки для Нього!

Now John wore a garment of camel’s hair and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.

Сам же Іван мав одяг з верблюжої шерсті й шкіряний пояс довкола своїх стегон; їжею його була сарана та дикий мед.

Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him,

Тоді виходив до нього Єрусалим, і вся Юдея, і вся околиця Йордану,

and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.

і, визнаючи свої гріхи, були хрещені ним у річці Йордані.

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

А коли він побачив, що багато фарисеїв [1] і садукеїв [2] приходять на хрещення до нього, то сказав їм: Поріддя гадюче, хто підказав вам втікати від майбутнього гніву?

Bear fruit in keeping with repentance.

Тож принесіть плід, гідний покаяння,

And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham.

і не пробуйте говорити: Маємо батька Авраама. Бо кажу вам, що Бог може із цього каміння пробудити дітей Авраамові.

10

Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

Сокира вже лежить біля коріння дерев, — усяке дерево, яке не приносить доброго плоду, зрубують і кидають у вогонь.

“I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

Отже, я хрещу вас водою на покаяння, а Той, Хто прийде після мене, сильніший за мене; Йому я недостойний нести взуття; Він вас хреститиме Духом Святим і вогнем.

His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

У Його руці лопата, і Він очистить Свій тік та збере Свою пшеницю в засіки, а полову спалить невгасимим вогнем.

The Baptism of Jesus

Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.

Тоді прийшов Ісус з Галилеї на Йордан до Івана, щоб у нього хреститися.

John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”

Іван же стримував Його, кажучи: Це мені потрібно від Тебе хреститися, а Ти йдеш до мене?

But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented.

Відповідаючи, Ісус сказав йому: Облиш тепер, бо так належить нам виконати всю правду. Тоді Іван допустив Його.

And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him,c and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him;

Охрестившись, Ісус відразу вийшов з води. І ось відчинилися Йому небеса, і Він побачив Духа Божого, Який спускався, як голуб, та сходив на Нього.

17

and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son,d with whom I am well pleased.”

І ось, почувся голос з неба: Це є Син Мій Улюблений, Якого Я вподобав.
