  • Jesus Delivered to Pilate

And as soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. And they bound Jesus and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate.
  • Jesus Faces Pilate

Immediately, in the morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council; and they bound Jesus, led Him away, and delivered Him to Pilate.
  • And Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, “You have said so.”
  • Then Pilate asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”
He answered and said to him, “It is as you say.”
  • And the chief priests accused him of many things.
  • And the chief priests accused Him of many things, but He answered nothing.
  • And Pilate again asked him, “Have you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you.”
  • Then Pilate asked Him again, saying, “Do You answer nothing? See how many things [a]they testify against You!”
  • But Jesus made no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.
  • But Jesus still answered nothing, so that Pilate marveled.

Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked.
  • Taking the Place of Barabbas

Now at the feast he was accustomed to releasing one prisoner to them, whomever they requested.
  • And among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas.
  • And there was one named Barabbas, who was chained with his fellow rebels; they had committed murder in the rebellion.
  • And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he usually did for them.
  • Then the multitude, [b]crying aloud, began to ask him to do just as he had always done for them.
  • And he answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?”
  • But Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”
  • For he perceived that it was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up.
  • For he knew that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy.
  • But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead.
  • But the chief priests stirred up the crowd, so that he should rather release Barabbas to them.
  • And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with the man you call the King of the Jews?”
  • Pilate answered and said to them again, “What then do you want me to do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?”
  • And they cried out again, “Crucify him.”
  • So they cried out again, “Crucify Him!”
  • And Pilate said to them, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.”
  • Then Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has He done?”
But they cried out all the more, “Crucify Him!”
  • So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having scourgeda Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.
  • So Pilate, wanting to gratify the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and he delivered Jesus, after he had scourged Him, to be crucified.
  • Jesus Is Mocked

And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters),b and they called together the whole battalion.c
  • The Soldiers Mock Jesus

Then the soldiers led Him away into the hall called [c]Praetorium, and they called together the whole garrison.
  • And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him.
  • And they clothed Him with purple; and they twisted a crown of thorns, put it on His head,
  • And they began to salute him, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
  • and began to salute Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
  • And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him.
  • Then they struck Him on the head with a reed and spat on Him; and bowing the knee, they worshiped Him.
  • And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him.
  • And when they had mocked Him, they took the purple off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him.
  • The Crucifixion

And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross.
  • The King on a Cross

Then they compelled a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, the father of Alexander and Rufus, as he was coming out of the country and passing by, to bear His cross.
  • And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull).
  • And they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull.
  • And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.
  • Then they gave Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but He did not take it.

  • And when they crucified Him, they divided His garments, casting lots for them to determine what every man should take.
  • And it was the third hourd when they crucified him.
  • Now it was the third hour, and they crucified Him.
  • And the inscription of the charge against him read, “The King of the Jews.”
  • And the inscription of His [d]accusation was written above:
    THE KING OF THE JEWS.
  • And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left.e
  • With Him they also crucified two robbers, one on His right and the other on His left.
