Jesus Delivered to Pilate

And as soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. And they bound Jesus and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate.

З самого ранку первосвященики вчинили нараду із старшими та книжниками — увесь синедріон. Зв'язавши ж Ісуса, вони повели та й видали його Пилатові.

And Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, “You have said so.”

Пилат спитав його: "Ти — цар юдейський?" Він же у відповідь мовить йому: "Ти кажеш."

And the chief priests accused him of many things.

3

А первосвященики багато обвинувачували його.

4

And Pilate again asked him, “Have you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you.”

4

І знову спитав його Пилат, кажучи: "Не відказуєш нічого? Дивись, скільки тебе винуватять."

5

But Jesus made no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.

5

Та Ісус нічого не відповідав більше, тож дивувався Пилат.

Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified

Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked.

На свято Пасхи відпускав він їм одного в'язня, того, якого вони просили.

7

And among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas.

А був один, що звавсь Варавва, ув'язнений з бунтівниками, які під час бунту вчинили були вбивство.

8

And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he usually did for them.

8

І народ, підвівшися, почав просити про те, що він робив їм завжди.

9

And he answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?”

Пилат же відповів їм, кажучи: "Хочете, щоб я відпустив вам царя юдейського?"

For he perceived that it was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up.

10

Знав бо, що первосвященики видали його через заздрощі.

But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead.

Первосвященики ж підбурили народ, щоб він відпустив їм радше Варавву.

12

And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with the man you call the King of the Jews?”

Пилат знову заговорив і мовив до них: "Що ж мені робити з тим, що ви звете царем юдейським?"

13

And they cried out again, “Crucify him.”

13

А ті знову закричали: "Розіпни його!"

14

And Pilate said to them, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.”

Пилат же сказав до них: "Що за зло вчинив він?" А вони ще гірше кричали: "Розіпни його!"

15

So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having scourgeda Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

15

Тоді Пилат, бажаючи догодити юрбі, відпустив їм Варавву, Ісуса ж, убичувавши, видав, щоб його розіп'яли.

Jesus Is Mocked

And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters),b and they called together the whole battalion.c

Вояки повели його в середину двору, тобто у Преторію, та й скликали всю чоту.

17

And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him.

17

Вони вдягли його в багряницю і, сплівши вінець із тернини, поклали на нього

18

And they began to salute him, “Hail, King of the Jews!”

18

та й почали його вітати: "Радуйся, царю юдейський!"

19

And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him.

19

І били його тростиною по голові, плювали на нього й, падаючи на коліна, поклонялись йому.

20

And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him.

20

Коли над ним наглумилися, зняли з нього багряницю й одягнули його в його одежу. Опісля ж повели його на розп'яття.

The Crucifixion

And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross.

Одного ж перехожого, Симона Киринея, батька Олександра та Руфа, що повертався з поля, присилували нести його хрест.

22

And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull).

22

І привели його на місце Голготу, що значить Череп-місце,

And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.

23

та й дали йому пити вина, змішаного з міррою, та він не прийняв.

24

And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take.

24

Тоді розіп'яли його й поділили його одежу, кинувши на неї жереб, хто що візьме.

25

And it was the third hourd when they crucified him.

25

Була ж: третя година, коли вони розіп'яли його.

26

And the inscription of the charge against him read, “The King of the Jews.”

А був і напис, за що його засуджено, написаний: "Цар Юдейський."

27

And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left.e

27

І розіп'яли з ним двох розбійників, одного праворуч, а другого ліворуч від нього.

29

And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,

29

І прохожі хулили його й, киваючи своїми головами, промовляли: "Гей, ти, що храм руйнуєш і в три дні знов його будуєш

30

save yourself, and come down from the cross!”

30

— спаси себе з хреста!"

31

So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself.

А й первосвященики глузували між собою й разом з книжниками приказували: "Інших спасав, а себе — не може спасти!

32

Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe.” Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.

32

Христос, цар Ізраїля — хай зійде тепер із хреста, щоб ми побачили й увірували." Та й ті, що були з ним розп'яті, зневажали його.

33

The Death of Jesus

And when the sixth hourf had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.g

33

А як настала шоста година, темрява наступила по всій землі аж до дев'ятої години.

34

And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

О дев'ятій же годині Ісус скрикнув голосом сильним: "Елої, Елої, лама савахтані?" — що означає у перекладі: "Боже мій, Боже мій! Чому єси покинув мене?"

35

And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.”

35

Деякі з тих, що там стояли, почувши те, казали: "Он, Іллю кличе!"

36

And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.”

36

Побіг один і, намочивши губку оцтом та настромивши на тростину, давав йому пити, кажучи: "Чекайте, побачимо, чи прийде Ілля зняти його!"

37

And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last.

37

А Ісус, голосом сильним скрикнувши, віддав духа.

And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.

38

Тоді завіса в храмі роздерлася надвоє, зверху аж донизу.

39

And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way heh breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Soni of God!”

39

Бачивши ж сотник, що стояв проти нього, що так віддав духа, сказав: "Чоловік цей справді був Син Божий."

40

There were also women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome.

40

Були й жінки, що дивилися здалека. Між ними була Марія Магдалина, Марія, мати Якова Молодшого та Йосифа, і Саломія,

41

When he was in Galilee, they followed him and ministered to him, and there were also many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.

41

що слідом за ним ходили і йому услугували, як був він у Галилеї, та й багато інших, що з ним були прийшли в Єрусалим.

Jesus Is Buried

And when evening had come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath,

Коли настав уже вечір, — тому що була це п'ятниця, тобто перед суботою,

Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

43

— Йосиф Ариматейський, поважний радник, що й сам очікував Божого Царства, прибув і, сміливо ввійшовши до Пилата, попросив тіло Ісуса.

44

Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died.j And summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead.

44

Пилат же здивувався, що вже вмер; і прикликавши сотника, спитав його, чи давно помер.

45

And when he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the corpse to Joseph.

45

Довідавшись від сотника, він видав Йосифові тіло;

And Josephk bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud and laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.

46

а Йосиф, купивши полотно, зняв його, обгорнув полотном і поклав його у гробі, що був висічений у скелі; потім прикотив камінь до входу гробу;

47

Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.

47

Марія ж Магдалина й Марія, мати Йосифа, дивились, де його покладено.
