English Standard Version

New Living Translation

  • And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power.”
  • Jesus went on to say, “I tell you the truth, some standing here right now will not die before they see the Kingdom of God arrive in great power!”
  • The Transfiguration

And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them,

  • The Transfiguration

Six days later Jesus took Peter, James, and John, and led them up a high mountain to be alone. As the men watched, Jesus’ appearance was transformed,
  • and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no onea on earth could bleach them.
  • and his clothes became dazzling white, far whiter than any earthly bleach could ever make them.
  • And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.
  • Then Elijah and Moses appeared and began talking with Jesus.
  • And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi,b it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.”
  • Peter exclaimed, “Rabbi, it’s wonderful for us to be here! Let’s make three shelters as memorialsa — one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
  • For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified.
  • He said this because he didn’t really know what else to say, for they were all terrified.
  • And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son;c listen to him.”
  • Then a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my dearly loved Son. Listen to him.”
  • And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only.
  • Suddenly, when they looked around, Moses and Elijah were gone, and they saw only Jesus with them.
  • And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
  • As they went back down the mountain, he told them not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Manb had risen from the dead.
  • So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what this rising from the dead might mean.
  • So they kept it to themselves, but they often asked each other what he meant by “rising from the dead.”
  • And they asked him, “Why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?”
  • Then they asked him, “Why do the teachers of religious law insist that Elijah must return before the Messiah comes?c
  • And he said to them, “Elijah does come first to restore all things. And how is it written of the Son of Man that he should suffer many things and be treated with contempt?
  • Jesus responded, “Elijah is indeed coming first to get everything ready. Yet why do the Scriptures say that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be treated with utter contempt?
  • But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of him.”
  • But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they chose to abuse him, just as the Scriptures predicted.”
  • Jesus Heals a Boy with an Unclean Spirit

And when they came to the disciples, they saw a great crowd around them, and scribes arguing with them.

  • Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy

When they returned to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd surrounding them, and some teachers of religious law were arguing with them.
  • And immediately all the crowd, when they saw him, were greatly amazed and ran up to him and greeted him.
  • When the crowd saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with awe, and they ran to greet him.
  • And he asked them, “What are you arguing about with them?”
  • “What is all this arguing about?” Jesus asked.
  • And someone from the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a spirit that makes him mute.
  • One of the men in the crowd spoke up and said, “Teacher, I brought my son so you could heal him. He is possessed by an evil spirit that won’t let him talk.
  • And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able.”
  • And whenever this spirit seizes him, it throws him violently to the ground. Then he foams at the mouth and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid.d So I asked your disciples to cast out the evil spirit, but they couldn’t do it.”
  • And he answered them, “O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me.”
  • Jesus said to them,e “You faithless people! How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.”
  • And they brought the boy to him. And when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth.
  • So they brought the boy. But when the evil spirit saw Jesus, it threw the child into a violent convulsion, and he fell to the ground, writhing and foaming at the mouth.
  • And Jesus asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood.
  • “How long has this been happening?” Jesus asked the boy’s father.
He replied, “Since he was a little boy.
  • And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”
  • The spirit often throws him into the fire or into water, trying to kill him. Have mercy on us and help us, if you can.”
  • And Jesus said to him, “‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes.”
  • “What do you mean, ‘If I can’?” Jesus asked. “Anything is possible if a person believes.”
  • Immediately the father of the child cried outd and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!”
  • The father instantly cried out, “I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!”
  • And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”
  • When Jesus saw that the crowd of onlookers was growing, he rebuked the evilf spirit. “Listen, you spirit that makes this boy unable to hear and speak,” he said. “I command you to come out of this child and never enter him again!”
  • And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse, so that most of them said, “He is dead.”
  • Then the spirit screamed and threw the boy into another violent convulsion and left him. The boy appeared to be dead. A murmur ran through the crowd as people said, “He’s dead.”
  • But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose.
  • But Jesus took him by the hand and helped him to his feet, and he stood up.
  • And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?”
  • Afterward, when Jesus was alone in the house with his disciples, they asked him, “Why couldn’t we cast out that evil spirit?”
  • And he said to them, “This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.”e
  • Jesus replied, “This kind can be cast out only by prayer.g
  • Jesus Again Foretells Death, Resurrection

They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And he did not want anyone to know,

  • Jesus Again Predicts His Death

Leaving that region, they traveled through Galilee. Jesus didn’t want anyone to know he was there,
  • for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him. And when he is killed, after three days he will rise.”
  • for he wanted to spend more time with his disciples and teach them. He said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of his enemies. He will be killed, but three days later he will rise from the dead.”
  • But they did not understand the saying, and were afraid to ask him.
  • They didn’t understand what he was saying, however, and they were afraid to ask him what he meant.
  • Who Is the Greatest?

And they came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house he asked them, “What were you discussing on the way?”

  • The Greatest in the Kingdom

After they arrived at Capernaum and settled in a house, Jesus asked his disciples, “What were you discussing out on the road?”
  • But they kept silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest.
  • But they didn’t answer, because they had been arguing about which of them was the greatest.
  • And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.”
  • He sat down, called the twelve disciples over to him, and said, “Whoever wants to be first must take last place and be the servant of everyone else.”
  • And he took a child and put him in the midst of them, and taking him in his arms, he said to them,
  • Then he put a little child among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them,
  • “Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.”
  • “Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalfh welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes not only me but also my Father who sent me.”
  • Anyone Not Against Us Is for Us

John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name,f and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us.”

  • Using the Name of Jesus

John said to Jesus, “Teacher, we saw someone using your name to cast out demons, but we told him to stop because he wasn’t in our group.”
  • But Jesus said, “Do not stop him, for no one who does a mighty work in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me.
  • “Don’t stop him!” Jesus said. “No one who performs a miracle in my name will soon be able to speak evil of me.
  • For the one who is not against us is for us.
  • Anyone who is not against us is for us.
  • For truly, I say to you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ will by no means lose his reward.
  • If anyone gives you even a cup of water because you belong to the Messiah, I tell you the truth, that person will surely be rewarded.
  • Temptations to Sin

“Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin,g it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.
  • “But if you cause one of these little ones who trusts in me to fall into sin, it would be better for you to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone hung around your neck.
  • And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than with two hands to go to hell,h to the unquenchable fire.i
  • If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It’s better to enter eternal life with only one hand than to go into the unquenchable fires of helli with two hands.j
  • And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into hell.
  • If your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It’s better to enter eternal life with only one foot than to be thrown into hell with two feet.k
  • And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell,
  • And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out. It’s better to enter the Kingdom of God with only one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell,
  • ‘where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.’
  • ‘where the maggots never die and the fire never goes out.’l
  • For everyone will be salted with fire.j
  • “For everyone will be tested with fire.m
  • Salt is good, but if the salt has lost its saltiness, how will you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”
  • Salt is good for seasoning. But if it loses its flavor, how do you make it salty again? You must have the qualities of salt among yourselves and live in peace with each other.”
