  • Repent or Perish

    There were some present at that very time who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.
  • A Call to Repentance

    About this time Jesus was informed that Pilate had murdered some people from Galilee as they were offering sacrifices at the Temple.
  • And he answered them, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way?
  • “Do you think those Galileans were worse sinners than all the other people from Galilee?” Jesus asked. “Is that why they suffered?
  • No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.
  • Not at all! And you will perish, too, unless you repent of your sins and turn to God.
  • Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem?
  • And what about the eighteen people who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them? Were they the worst sinners in Jerusalem?
  • No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”
  • No, and I tell you again that unless you repent, you will perish, too.”

    And he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none.

    Then Jesus told this story: “A man planted a fig tree in his garden and came again and again to see if there was any fruit on it, but he was always disappointed.
  • And he said to the vinedresser, ‘Look, for three years now I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I find none. Cut it down. Why should it use up the ground?’
  • Finally, he said to his gardener, ‘I’ve waited three years, and there hasn’t been a single fig! Cut it down. It’s just taking up space in the garden.’
  • And he answered him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and put on manure.
  • “The gardener answered, ‘Sir, give it one more chance. Leave it another year, and I’ll give it special attention and plenty of fertilizer.
  • Then if it should bear fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.’”
  • If we get figs next year, fine. If not, then you can cut it down.’”
  • A Woman with a Disabling Spirit

    Now he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath.

    One Sabbath day as Jesus was teaching in a synagogue,
  • And behold, there was a woman who had had a disabling spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not fully straighten herself.
  • he saw a woman who had been crippled by an evil spirit. She had been bent double for eighteen years and was unable to stand up straight.
  • When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said to her, “Woman, you are freed from your disability.”
  • When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, “Dear woman, you are healed of your sickness!”
  • And he laid his hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and she glorified God.
  • Then he touched her, and instantly she could stand straight. How she praised God!
  • But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, said to the people, “There are six days in which work ought to be done. Come on those days and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day.”
  • But the leader in charge of the synagogue was indignant that Jesus had healed her on the Sabbath day. “There are six days of the week for working,” he said to the crowd. “Come on those days to be healed, not on the Sabbath.”
  • Then the Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger and lead it away to water it?
  • But the Lord replied, “You hypocrites! Each of you works on the Sabbath day! Don’t you untie your ox or your donkey from its stall on the Sabbath and lead it out for water?
  • And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day?”
  • This dear woman, a daughter of Abraham, has been held in bondage by Satan for eighteen years. Isn’t it right that she be released, even on the Sabbath?”
  • As he said these things, all his adversaries were put to shame, and all the people rejoiced at all the glorious things that were done by him.
  • This shamed his enemies, but all the people rejoiced at the wonderful things he did.
  • The Mustard Seed and the Leaven

    He said therefore, “What is the kingdom of God like? And to what shall I compare it?

  • Parable of the Mustard Seed

    Then Jesus said, “What is the Kingdom of God like? How can I illustrate it?
  • It is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his garden, and it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air made nests in its branches.”
  • It is like a tiny mustard seed that a man planted in a garden; it grows and becomes a tree, and the birds make nests in its branches.”
  • And again he said, “To what shall I compare the kingdom of God?

    He also asked, “What else is the Kingdom of God like?
  • It is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, until it was all leavened.”
  • It is like the yeast a woman used in making bread. Even though she put only a little yeast in three measures of flour, it permeated every part of the dough.”

    He went on his way through towns and villages, teaching and journeying toward Jerusalem.

    Jesus went through the towns and villages, teaching as he went, always pressing on toward Jerusalem.
  • And someone said to him, “Lord, will those who are saved be few?” And he said to them,
  • Someone asked him, “Lord, will only a few be saved?”
    He replied,
  • “Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.
  • “Work hard to enter the narrow door to God’s Kingdom, for many will try to enter but will fail.
  • When once the master of the house has risen and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, open to us,’ then he will answer you, ‘I do not know where you come from.’
  • When the master of the house has locked the door, it will be too late. You will stand outside knocking and pleading, ‘Lord, open the door for us!’ But he will reply, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from.’
  • Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.’
  • Then you will say, ‘But we ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’
  • But he will say, ‘I tell you, I do not know where you come from. Depart from me, all you workers of evil!’
  • And he will reply, ‘I tell you, I don’t know you or where you come from. Get away from me, all you who do evil.’
  • In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God but you yourselves cast out.
  • “There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, for you will see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in the Kingdom of God, but you will be thrown out.
  • And people will come from east and west, and from north and south, and recline at table in the kingdom of God.
  • And people will come from all over the world — from east and west, north and south — to take their places in the Kingdom of God.
  • And behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”
  • And note this: Some who seem least important now will be the greatest then, and some who are the greatest now will be least important then.a
  • Lament over Jerusalem

    At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to him, “Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you.”

  • Jesus Grieves over Jerusalem

    At that time some Pharisees said to him, “Get away from here if you want to live! Herod Antipas wants to kill you!”
  • And he said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I finish my course.
  • Jesus replied, “Go tell that fox that I will keep on casting out demons and healing people today and tomorrow; and the third day I will accomplish my purpose.
  • Nevertheless, I must go on my way today and tomorrow and the day following, for it cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem.’
  • Yes, today, tomorrow, and the next day I must proceed on my way. For it wouldn’t do for a prophet of God to be killed except in Jerusalem!
  • O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!
  • “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones God’s messengers! How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn’t let me.
  • Behold, your house is forsaken. And I tell you, you will not see me until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’”
  • And now, look, your house is abandoned. And you will never see me again until you say, ‘Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord!’b
