Jesus Before Pilate

Then the whole company of them arose and brought him before Pilate.

І вставши все множество їх, повели Його до Пилата.

And they began to accuse him, saying, “We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding us to give tribute to Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ, a king.”

І стали винувати Його, кажучи: Сього знайшли ми, що розвертає народ і забороняє кесареві данину давати, та й каже, що Він Христос-цар.

And Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, “You have said so.”

Пилат же спитав Його, кажучи: Чи Ти цар Жидівський? Він же, озвавшись до него, рече: Ти кажеш.

Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no guilt in this man.”

Пилат же сказав до архиєреїв і до народу: Нїякої не знаходжу вини в чоловікові сьому.

But they were urgent, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee even to this place.”

Вони ж намагали, говорячи: Що бунтує народ, навчаючи по всїй Юдеї, почавши від Галилеї аж посї.

Jesus Before Herod

When Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean.

Пилат же, почувши про Галилею, спитав, чи чоловік не Галилеєць,

And when he learned that he belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him over to Herod, who was himself in Jerusalem at that time.

і, довідавшись, що Він присуду Іродового, післав Його до Ірода, що також був у Єрусалимі тими днями.

When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, for he had long desired to see him, because he had heard about him, and he was hoping to see some sign done by him.

Ірод же, побачивши Ісуса, зрадїв вельми; бажав бо здавна бачити Його; бо чув багато про Него; й сподївав ся яку ознаку бачити, що від Него станеть ся.

So he questioned him at some length, but he made no answer.

9

Питав же Його словами многими; Він же нїчого не відказав йому.

The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him.

10

Стояли ж архиєреї та письменники, завзято винуючи Його.

11

And Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him. Then, arraying him in splendid clothing, he sent him back to Pilate.

Зневаживши ж Його Ірод з воїнами своїми та насьміявшись, одягнувши Його в шату ясну, післав Його Пилатові.

And Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that very day, for before this they had been at enmity with each other.

Стали ж собі другами Пилат та Ірод того дня: жили бо перше, ворогуючи між собою.

13

Pilate then called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,

Пилат же, скликавши архиєреїв та князїв і народ,

and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was misleading the people. And after examining him before you, behold, I did not find this man guilty of any of your charges against him.

14

каже до них: Привели ви менї чоловіка сього, яко розвертаючого народ; і ось я, перед вами питаючи, нїякої не знайшов в чоловікові сьому вини, якими винуєте Його;

15

Neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us. Look, nothing deserving death has been done by him.

15

та й нї Ірод; посилав бо Його до него, й ось нїчого достойного смерти не знайдено в Ньому.

16

I will therefore punish and release him.”a

16

То, покаравши, відпущу Його.

Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified

But they all cried out together, “Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas” —

Закричали ж вони всї разом, кажучи: Візьми сього, відпусти ж нам Вараву,

19

a man who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection started in the city and for murder.

19

котрого, за якусь бучу, що сталась у городї, і за убийство, вкинуто в темницю.

20

Pilate addressed them once more, desiring to release Jesus,

20

Знов же Пилат покликнув, хотївши відпустити Ісуса.

21

but they kept shouting, “Crucify, crucify him!”

21

Вони ж кричали: Розпни, розпни Його!

22

A third time he said to them, “Why? What evil has he done? I have found in him no guilt deserving death. I will therefore punish and release him.”

22

Він же втретє каже до них: Яке ж бо зло зробив сей? Нїякої вини смерти не знайшов я в Йому. То покаравши, випущу Його.

23

But they were urgent, demanding with loud cries that he should be crucified. And their voices prevailed.

23

Вони ж намагали голосом великим, просячи, Його розпяти. І перемогли голоси їх та архиєрейські.

24

So Pilate decided that their demand should be granted.

24

Пилат же присудив, щоб сталось по просьбі їх.

25

He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, for whom they asked, but he delivered Jesus over to their will.

25

Відпустив же їм за бунт і убийство вкинутого в темницю, котрого просили; Ісуса ж видав на їх волю.

The Crucifixion

And as they led him away, they seized one Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and laid on him the cross, to carry it behind Jesus.

26

І як повели Його, то, взявши одного Симона Киринея, ідучого з поля, положили на него хрест нести за Ісусом.

27

And there followed him a great multitude of the people and of women who were mourning and lamenting for him.

27

Ійшло ж слїдом за Ним велике множество народу й жінок, що голосили й ридали по Йому.

28

But turning to them Jesus said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.

28

І обернувшись до них Ісус, рече: Дочки Єрусалимські, не плачте по менї, а по собі плачте і по дїтях ваших.

29

For behold, the days are coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’

29

Бо ось прийдуть днї, коли скажуть: Блаженні неплідні, й утроби, що не родили, й соски, що не годували.

30

Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’

30

Тодї стануть говорити горам: Упадїть на нас, і узгіррям: Покрийте нас.

31

For if they do these things when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?”

31

Бо коли зеленому дереву се роблять, то з сухим що станеть ся?

32

Two others, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him.

32

Ведено ж і инших двох лиходїїв з Ним на смерть.

33

And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left.

33

І, як прийшли на врочище Черепове, там розпяли Його й лиходїїв, одного по правицї, а одного по лївицї.

34

And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”b And they cast lots to divide his garments.

34

Ісус же рече: Отче, відпусти їм; не знають бо, що роблять.

35

And the people stood by, watching, but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!”

35

І стояв народ дивлячись. Насьміхали ся ж і старші з ними, кажучи: Инших спасав; нехай спасе й себе, коли се Христос, вибраний Божий.

36

The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine

36

Насьміхали ся ж з Него й воїни, приступаючи й оцет подаючи Йому,

37

and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!”

37

і кажучи: Коли Ти єси цар Жидівський, спаси себе.

38

There was also an inscription over him,c “This is the King of the Jews.”

38

Була ж і надпись над Ним письмом Грецьким та Римським, та Єврейським: Се цар Жидівський.

39

One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him,d saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!”

39

Один же з повішених лиходїїв хулив Його, кажучи: Коли Ти Христос, спаси себе й нас!

40

But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation?

40

Озвавши ся ж другий, докорив йому, кажучи: І не боїш ся Бога, коли в такому ж осудї єси?

41

And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.”

41

Та ми по правдї; по заслузї бо за те, що коїли, приймаємо; сей же нїчого недоброго не зробив.

42

And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”

42

І сказав до Ісуса: Спогадай мене, Господи, як прийдеш у царство Твоє.

43

And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

43

І рече йому Ісус: Істино глаголю тобі: Сьогоднї зо мною будеш у раю.

44

The Death of Jesus

It was now about the sixth hour,e and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour,f

44

Було ж се коло години шестої, і темрява сталась по всїй землї до години девятої.

45

while the sun’s light failed. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two.

45

І померкло сонце, й роздерлась завіса церковня посерединї.

46

Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last.

46

І покликнувши голосом великим Ісус, рече: Отче, у Твої руки передаю духа мого! й, се промовивши, зітхнув духа.

47

Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God, saying, “Certainly this man was innocent!”

47

Побачивши ж сотник, що сталось, прославив Бога, кажучи: Справдї, чоловік сей праведний був.

48

And all the crowds that had assembled for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned home beating their breasts.

48

І ввесь народ, що зійшов ся на сю дивовижу, побачивши, що сталось, бючи себе в груди, вертав ся.

49

And all his acquaintances and the women who had followed him from Galilee stood at a distance watching these things.

49

Стояли ж усї знакомі Його оддалеки й жінки, що поприходили слїдом за Ним із Галилеї, дивлячись на се.

Jesus Is Buried

Now there was a man named Joseph, from the Jewish town of Arimathea. He was a member of the council, a good and righteous man,

50

І ось чоловік, на ймя Йосиф, що був радник, чоловік добрий і праведний,

51

who had not consented to their decision and action; and he was looking for the kingdom of God.

51

(сей не пристав до ради й дїла їх,) з Ариматеї, города Жидівського, що також сподївавсь царства Божого;

52

This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

52

сей, прийшовши до Пилата, просив тїла Ісусового.

53

Then he took it down and wrapped it in a linen shroud and laid him in a tomb cut in stone, where no one had ever yet been laid.

53

І, знявши Його, обгорнув Його плащеницею, і положив Його у гробі висїченому, де нїколи нїхто не лежав.

It was the day of Preparation, and the Sabbath was beginning.g

54

І був день пятниця, а субота сьвітала.

55

The women who had come with him from Galilee followed and saw the tomb and how his body was laid.

55

Поприходивши ж слїдом жінки, що прийшли з Галилеї, дивились на гріб, і як положене було тїло Його.

56

Then they returned and prepared spices and ointments.
On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.

І вернувшись наготовили пахощів та мира, а в суботу відпочивали по заповідї.
