  • for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry.

  • But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone.’b
  • And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time,

  • and said to him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will.

  • And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here,
  • Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple, and said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off!
  • for it is written,
    “‘He will command his angels concerning you,
    to guard you,’
  • For the Scriptures say,
    ‘He will order his angels to protect and guard you.
  • and
    “‘On their hands they will bear you up,
    lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”
  • And they will hold you up with their hands
    so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’d
  • And Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
  • Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the Lord your God.’e
  • And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time.
  • When the devil had finished tempting Jesus, he left him until the next opportunity came.
  • Jesus Begins His Ministry

    And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report about him went out through all the surrounding country.

  • And he said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘“Physician, heal yourself.” What we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’”
  • Then he said, “You will undoubtedly quote me this proverb: ‘Physician, heal yourself’ — meaning, ‘Do miracles here in your hometown like those you did in Capernaum.’
  • And he said, “Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown.
  • But I tell you the truth, no prophet is accepted in his own hometown.
  • But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land,
  • “Certainly there were many needy widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the heavens were closed for three and a half years, and a severe famine devastated the land.
  • and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.
  • Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them. He was sent instead to a foreigner — a widow of Zarephath in the land of Sidon.
  • And there were many lepersa in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.”
  • And many in Israel had leprosy in the time of the prophet Elisha, but the only one healed was Naaman, a Syrian.”
  • When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath.
  • When they heard this, the people in the synagogue were furious.
  • And they rose up and drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff.
  • Jumping up, they mobbed him and forced him to the edge of the hill on which the town was built. They intended to push him over the cliff,

  • Jesus Heals a Man with an Unclean Demon

    And he went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And he was teaching them on the Sabbath,

    Then Jesus went to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and taught there in the synagogue every Sabbath day.
  • and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word possessed authority.
  • There, too, the people were amazed at his teaching, for he spoke with authority.
  • And in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice,
  • Once when he was in the synagogue, a man possessed by a demon — an evilg spirit — cried out, shouting,
  • “Ha!b What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are — the Holy One of God.”
  • “Go away! Why are you interfering with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are — the Holy One of God!”
  • But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm.
  • But Jesus reprimanded him. “Be quiet! Come out of the man,” he ordered. At that, the demon threw the man to the floor as the crowd watched; then it came out of him without hurting him further.
  • And they were all amazed and said to one another, “What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!”
  • Amazed, the people exclaimed, “What authority and power this man’s words possess! Even evil spirits obey him, and they flee at his command!”
  • And reports about him went out into every place in the surrounding region.
  • The news about Jesus spread through every village in the entire region.
  • Jesus Heals Many

    And he arose and left the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they appealed to him on her behalf.

    After leaving the synagogue that day, Jesus went to Simon’s home, where he found Simon’s mother-in-law very sick with a high fever. “Please heal her,” everyone begged.
  • And he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she rose and began to serve them.
  • Standing at her bedside, he rebuked the fever, and it left her. And she got up at once and prepared a meal for them.
  • Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him, and he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them.
  • As the sun went down that evening, people throughout the village brought sick family members to Jesus. No matter what their diseases were, the touch of his hand healed every one.
  • And demons also came out of many, crying, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.
  • Many were possessed by demons; and the demons came out at his command, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But because they knew he was the Messiah, he rebuked them and refused to let them speak.
  • Jesus Preaches in Synagogues

    And when it was day, he departed and went into a desolate place. And the people sought him and came to him, and would have kept him from leaving them,

  • Jesus Continues to Preach

    Early the next morning Jesus went out to an isolated place. The crowds searched everywhere for him, and when they finally found him, they begged him not to leave them.
  • but he said to them, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose.”
  • But he replied, “I must preach the Good News of the Kingdom of God in other towns, too, because that is why I was sent.”
  • And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.c
  • So he continued to travel around, preaching in synagogues throughout Judea.h
