“If there is a dispute between men and they come into court and the judges decide between them, acquitting the innocent and condemning the guilty,

Коли буде супере́чка між людьми́, і вони при́йдуть до су́ду, то розсудять їх, — і оправдають справедливого, а несправедливого осудять.

then if the guilty man deserves to be beaten, the judge shall cause him to lie down and be beaten in his presence with a number of stripes in proportion to his offense.

І станеться, якщо вартий биття́ той несправедливий, то покладе його суддя, і буде його бити перед собою, — число ударів згідно з його несправедливістю.

Forty stripes may be given him, but not more, lest, if one should go on to beat him with more stripes than these, your brother be degraded in your sight.

Сорока́ ударами буде його бити, не більше; щоб не бити його більше над те великим биття́м, і щоб не був злегкова́жений брат твій на оча́х твоїх.

“You shall not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the grain.

Laws Concerning Levirate Marriage

“If brothers dwell together, and one of them dies and has no son, the wife of the dead man shall not be married outside the family to a stranger. Her husband’s brother shall go in to her and take her as his wife and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her.

Коли браття сидітимуть ра́зом, і один із них помре, а сина в нього нема, то жінка померлого не вийде за́між назовні за чужого, — ді́вер її при́йде до неї та й ві́зьме її собі за жінку, і подіверу́є її.

And the first son whom she bears shall succeed to the name of his dead brother, that his name may not be blotted out of Israel.

І буде перворідний, що вона породить, — стане він ім'я́м його брата, що помер, і не буде стерте ім'я́ його з Ізраїля.

And if the man does not wish to take his brother’s wife, then his brother’s wife shall go up to the gate to the elders and say, ‘My husband’s brother refuses to perpetuate his brother’s name in Israel; he will not perform the duty of a husband’s brother to me.’

А якщо той чоловік не схоче взяти своєї братово́ї, то братова́ його ви́йде до брами до старши́х та й скаже: „Ді́вер мій відмовився відновити своєму братові ім'я́ в Ізраїлі, не хотів подіверува́ти мене“.

Then the elders of his city shall call him and speak to him, and if he persists, saying, ‘I do not wish to take her,’

І покличуть його старші його міста, і промовлятимуть до нього, а він устане та й скаже: „Не хочу взяти її“,

9

then his brother’s wife shall go up to him in the presence of the elders and pull his sandal off his foot and spit in his face. And she shall answer and say, ‘So shall it be done to the man who does not build up his brother’s house.’

то піді́йде його братова́ до нього на оча́х старши́х, і зді́йме йому чобота з ноги його, і плюне в обличчя його, і заговорить, і скаже: „Так робиться чоловікові, що не будує дому свого брата“.

And the name of his housea shall be called in Israel, ‘The house of him who had his sandal pulled off.’

І буде зване ім'я́ його в Ізраїлі: Дім роззутого.

Miscellaneous Laws

“When men fight with one another and the wife of the one draws near to rescue her husband from the hand of him who is beating him and puts out her hand and seizes him by the private parts,

Коли чоловіки будуть сваритися ра́зом один з о́дним, і піді́йде жінка одно́го, щоб оберегти свого чоловіка від руки того, що б'є його, і простягне свою руку, і схо́пить за сором його,

then you shall cut off her hand. Your eye shall have no pity.

то відрубаєш руку її, — нехай не змилосе́рдиться око твоє!

“You shall not have in your bag two kinds of weights, a large and a small.

Не буде в тебе в торбі твоїй подвійного ка́меня до ваги́, великого й мало́го,

14

You shall not have in your house two kinds of measures, a large and a small.

14

не буде тобі в твоїм домі подвійної ефи́, великої й мало́ї.

15

A full and fairb weight you shall have, a full and fair measure you shall have, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

15

Камінь до ваги буде в тебе повний і справедливий, ефа́ буде в тебе повна й справедлива, щоб продо́вжилися дні твої на землі, яку Господь, Бог твій, дає тобі.

16

For all who do such things, all who act dishonestly, are an abomination to the Lord your God.

16

Бо огида перед Господом, Богом твоїм, кожен, хто чинить таке, хто чинить несправедливість.

17

“Remember what Amalek did to you on the way as you came out of Egypt,

Пам'ятайте, що́ зробив був тобі Амали́к у дорозі, коли ви вихо́дили з Єгипту,

18

how he attacked you on the way when you were faint and weary, and cut off your tail, those who were lagging behind you, and he did not fear God.

18

що спіткав тебе в дорозі, і повбивав між тобою всіх задніх осла́блених, коли ти був зму́чений та стру́джений, а він не боявся Бога.

19

Therefore when the Lord your God has given you rest from all your enemies around you, in the land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance to possess, you shall blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven; you shall not forget.

І станеться, коли Господь, Бог твій, дасть тобі мир від усіх ворогів твоїх навколо в кра́ї, що Господь, Бог твій, дає тобі як спа́док, щоб посісти його, то зітреш пам'ять Амали́ка з-під неба. Не забудь!
