But the people of Israel broke faith in regard to the devoted things, for Achan the son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things. And the anger of the Lord burned against the people of Israel.

І спроневі́рилися Ізраїлеві сини в заклятому, — Ахай, син Кармія, сина Завдієвого, сина Зерахового, Юдиного племени, узяв із заклятого. І запали́вся Господній гнів на Ізраїлевих синів.
Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near Beth-aven, east of Bethel, and said to them, “Go up and spy out the land.” And the men went up and spied out Ai.
І послав Ісус мужів з Єрихону в Ай, що при Бет-Евені, на схід від Бет-Елу, і сказав до них, говорячи: „Підіть, і ви́відайте цей Край“. І пішли ті му́жі, і вивідали той Ай.
And they returned to Joshua and said to him, “Do not have all the people go up, but let about two or three thousand men go up and attack Ai. Do not make the whole people toil up there, for they are few.”
І вернулися вони до Ісуса та й сказали до нього: „Нехай не йде ввесь наро́д, — коло двох тисяч лю́да або коло трьох тисяч люда нехай вийдуть, і поб'ють Ай. Не труди всього народу туди, бо ті вороги нечисле́нні“.
So about three thousand men went up there from the people. And they fled before the men of Ai,
І пішли туди з народу коло трьох тисяч люда, — та вони повтікали перед айськими людьми́.
and the men of Ai killed about thirty-six of their men and chased them before the gate as far as Shebarim and struck them at the descent. And the hearts of the people melted and became as water.
І айські люди повибива́ли з них коло тридцяти й шости чоловіка, та й гнали їх з-перед брами аж до Шеварім, і розбили їх на узбі́ччі гори. І охля́ло серце народу, та й стало як вода.
Then Joshua tore his clothes and fell to the earth on his face before the ark of the Lord until the evening, he and the elders of Israel. And they put dust on their heads.
І роздер Ісус одежу свою, та й упав на обличчя своє на землю перед Господнім ковчегом, і лежав аж до вечора він та Ізраїлеві старші́, і посипа́ли порохом свою го́лову.
And Joshua said, “Alas, O Lord God, why have you brought this people over the Jordan at all, to give us into the hands of the Amorites, to destroy us? Would that we had been content to dwell beyond the Jordan!
І сказав Ісус: „Ах, Владико Господи, для чого Ти конче перепровадив цей наро́д через Йорда́н, щоб дати нас у руку аморе́янина, щоб вигубити нас? О, коли б ми були позоста́лися, і осіли по той бік Йорда́ну!
O Lord, what can I say, when Israel has turned their backs before their enemies!
О, Господи! Що я скажу́ по тому, як Ізраїль обернув потилицю перед своїми ворога́ми?
For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it and will surround us and cut off our name from the earth. And what will you do for your great name?”
І почують ханаанеянин та всі ме́шканці цього краю, і зберуться навколо на нас, і знищать ім'я́ наше з землі. І що́ Ти зробиш Своєму великому Йменню?“
The Sin of Achan
The Lord said to Joshua, “Get up! Why have you fallen on your face?
The Lord said to Joshua, “Get up! Why have you fallen on your face?
І сказав Господь до Ісуса: „Устань, — по́що то ти падаєш на обличчя своє?
Israel has sinned; they have transgressed my covenant that I commanded them; they have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen and lied and put them among their own belongings.
Ізраїль згрішив, і вони переступили Мого заповіта, що Я наказав їм, і взяли з заклятого, а також крали, і обманювали, і клали поміж свої речі.
І не зможуть Ізраїлеві сини всто́яти перед своїми ворогами, — вони обернуть спи́ну перед ворогами своїми, бо стали закляттям. Не буду більше з вами, якщо не ви́губите заклятого з-поміж себе!
Get up! Consecrate the people and say, ‘Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow; for thus says the Lord, God of Israel, “There are devoted things in your midst, O Israel. You cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the devoted things from among you.”
Устань, освяти народ та й скажеш: Освятіться на завтра, бо так сказав Господь, Бог Ізраїлів: Закляте серед тебе, Ізраїлю! Ти не зможеш усто́яти перед своїми ворогами, аж доки ви не викинете з-поміж себе того заклятого.
In the morning therefore you shall be brought near by your tribes. And the tribe that the Lord takes by lot shall come near by clans. And the clan that the Lord takes shall come near by households. And the household that the Lord takes shall come near man by man.
І підходьте ра́но вранці за вашими племена́ми. І станеться, те пле́м'я, що його виявить Господь, нехай підходить за ро́дами; а рід, що його виявить Господь, підходитиме за дома́ми, а дім, що його виявить Господь, підходитиме за мужчи́нами.
And he who is taken with the devoted things shall be burned with fire, he and all that he has, because he has transgressed the covenant of the Lord, and because he has done an outrageous thing in Israel.’”
І станеться, хто буде ви́явлений у заклятім, той буде спалений в огні, — він та все, що його, бо переступив він заповіта Господнього, і вчинив безсоромне між Ізраїлем“.
So Joshua rose early in the morning and brought Israel near tribe by tribe, and the tribe of Judah was taken.
І встав Ісус рано вранці, і привів Ізраїля за його племена́ми, — і було́ виявлене Юдине пле́м'я.
And he brought near the clans of Judah, and the clan of the Zerahites was taken. And he brought near the clan of the Zerahites man by man, and Zabdi was taken.
І привів він Юдині ро́ди, і був виявлений рід Зархіїв. І привів він Зархіїв рід за роди́нами, і був виявлений Завдій.
And he brought near his household man by man, and Achan the son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.
І привів він його дім за мужчи́нами, і був виявлений Ахан, син Кармія, сина Завдія, сина Зераха з Юдиного племени.
І сказав Ісус до Ахана: „Сину мій, воздай же славу для Господа, Бога Ізраїля, і признайся Йому, і подай мені, що́ ти зробив? Не скажи неправди передо мною!“
And Achan answered Joshua, “Truly I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and this is what I did:
І відповів Ахан до Ісуса та й сказав: „Дійсно, згрішив я Господе́ві, Богові Ізраїля, і зробив так та так.
І побачив я в здо́бичі одного доброго шін'арського плаща, і дві сотні шеклів срібла, і одного золотого зли́вка, п'ятдесят шеклів вага його, — і забажав я їх, і взяв їх. І ось вони сховані в землі в сере́дині намету мого, а срібло під ним“.
So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and behold, it was hidden in his tent with the silver underneath.
І послав Ісус посланців, і побігли вони до намету, аж ось сховане воно в наметі, а срібло під ним.
And they took them out of the tent and brought them to Joshua and to all the people of Israel. And they laid them down before the Lord.
І забрали його́ з сере́дини намету, і прине́сли його́ до Ісуса та до всіх Ізраїлевих синів, і поклали його́ перед Господнім лицем.
And Joshua and all Israel with him took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver and the cloak and the bar of gold, and his sons and daughters and his oxen and donkeys and sheep and his tent and all that he had. And they brought them up to the Valley of Achor.
І взяв Ісус Ахана, Зерахового сина, і те срібло, і того плаща, і того золотого зли́вка, і синів його, і дочо́к його, і вола його, і осла його, і отару його, і намета його, і все, що його, а ввесь Ізраїль із ним, та й повиво́дили їх до долини Ахор.
And Joshua said, “Why did you bring trouble on us? The Lord brings trouble on you today.” And all Israel stoned him with stones. They burned them with fire and stoned them with stones.
І сказав Ісус: „На́що ти навів нещастя на нас? Нехай на тебе наведе́ це нещастя Господь цього дня!“ І вкаменува́ли його, увесь Ізраїль, камінням. І попалили їх в огні, і вкаменували їх камінням.
І поставили над ним велику камінну могилу, що стоїть аж до цього дня. І спинив Господь лютість гніву Свого, тому назвав ім'я́ того місця: Ахор, аж до цього дня.
