The Priestly Order of Melchizedek

For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him,

Сей бо Мелхиседек, цар Салимський, священик Бога вишнього, що зустрів Авраама, як вертавсь він з побоїща царів, і благословив його;

2

and to him Abraham apportioned a tenth part of everything. He is first, by translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then he is also king of Salem, that is, king of peace.

котрому й десятину з усього віддїлив Авраам (перше ж оце перекладом зветь ся цар правди, а потім і цар Салимський, чи то цар впокою),

He is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever.

без батька, без матери, без родоводу, нї почину днїв, нї конця життя не маючи, уподоблений же Сину Божому, пробуває священиком вічно.

See how great this man was to whom Abraham the patriarch gave a tenth of the spoils!

Дивіте ся ж, який великий той, кому і десятину дав Авраам патриярх із вибраного.

And those descendants of Levi who receive the priestly office have a commandment in the law to take tithes from the people, that is, from their brothers,a though these also are descended from Abraham.

Тай ті із синів Левіїних, що приймають сьвященство, мають заповідь брати десятину з народу по закону, се єсть із браття свого, хоч і з чересел Авраамових вийшло воно.

But this man who does not have his descent from them received tithes from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises.

Той же, хто не виводить роду свого від них, узяв десятину з Авраама, і маючого обітницю благословив.

It is beyond dispute that the inferior is blessed by the superior.

Без усякого ж перечення менше від більшого благословляєть ся.

In the one case tithes are received by mortal men, but in the other case, by one of whom it is testified that he lives.

І тут беруть десятини люде, що мруть, а там — той, про кого сьвідчить ся, що він живе.

One might even say that Levi himself, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham,

І, щоб так сказати, через Авраама взята десятина і з Левія, що бере десятини.

for he was still in the loins of his ancestor when Melchizedek met him.

Ще бо в череслах отецьких був, як зустрів його Мелхиседек.

Jesus Compared to Melchizedek

Now if perfection had been attainable through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), what further need would there have been for another priest to arise after the order of Melchizedek, rather than one named after the order of Aaron?

Коли ж звершеннє було через Левійське сьвященство (бо під ним люде озаконені стались), то яка ж іще потреба иншому встати сьвященикові по чину Мелхиседековому, а не по чину Аароновому звати ся?

For when there is a change in the priesthood, there is necessarily a change in the law as well.

Коли бо переміняєть ся сьвященство, мусить конче і переміна закону бути.

13

For the one of whom these things are spoken belonged to another tribe, from which no one has ever served at the altar.

Про Кого бо се говорить ся, з иншого колїна був, з котрого нїхто не приступав до жертівнї.

14

For it is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah, and in connection with that tribe Moses said nothing about priests.

Явно бо, що з колїна Юдового вийшов Господь наш, а про се колїно Мойсей об сьвященстві нїчого не сказав.

15

This becomes even more evident when another priest arises in the likeness of Melchizedek,

І більше ще явно, що по подобию Мелхиседековому встає инший сьвященик,

16

who has become a priest, not on the basis of a legal requirement concerning bodily descent, but by the power of an indestructible life.

котрий не по закону заповідї тїлесної постав, а по силї життя незотлїнного.

17

For it is witnessed of him,
“You are a priest forever,
after the order of Melchizedek.”

17

Сьвідкує бо: "Що Ти єси сьвященик по вік по чину Мелхиседековому."

18

For on the one hand, a former commandment is set aside because of its weakness and uselessness

Стало ся ж знищеннє попередньої заповідї за її неміць і невжиточність.

19

(for the law made nothing perfect); but on the other hand, a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God.

19

Нїчого бо не звершив закон, а приведене лучче впованнє, котрим наближуємось до Бога.

20

And it was not without an oath. For those who formerly became priests were made such without an oath,

20

І на скілько воно не без клятьби,

21

but this one was made a priest with an oath by the one who said to him:
“The Lord has sworn
and will not change his mind,
‘You are a priest forever.’”

(ті бо сьвященики без клятьби ставали, а Сей з клятьбою через Того, хто глаголав до Него: "Кляв ся Господь, і не розкаяв ся: Ти єси сьвященик по вік, по чину Мелхиседековому")

This makes Jesus the guarantor of a better covenant.

на стілько луччого завіту став ся порукою Ісус.

23

The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office,

І більш їх було сьвящениками, бо смерть боронила їм пробувати;

24

but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever.

24

сей же, через те, що пробуває по вік, непереходяче має сьвященство.

25

Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermostb those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.

25

Тим же і спасти може до кінця приходящих через Нього до Бога, будучи вічно жив, щоб посередникувати за них.

26

For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.

26

Такого бо нам подобало (мати) Архиєрея, преподобного, безвинного, непорочного, відлученого від грішників і вищого небес,

27

He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself.

27

котрий не має по всї днї нужди, як архиєреї, перше за свої гріхи жертви приносити, а потім за людські: се бо зробив заразом, себе принїсши.

28

For the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever.

28

Закон бо людей поставляє архиєреями, маючих немочі, слово ж клятьби, що послї закону, Сина на віки звершеного.
