Israel’s Disobedience

Now the angel of the Lord went up from Gilgal to Bochim. And he said, “I brought you up from Egypt and brought you into the land that I swore to give to your fathers. I said, ‘I will never break my covenant with you,

І прийшов Ангол Господній з Ґілґалу до Бохіму, та й сказав: „Я вивів вас із Єгипту до того кра́ю, що присягнув був вашим батька́м. І сказав Я: не зламаю Свого заповіту з вами повіки!

2

and you shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you shall break down their altars.’ But you have not obeyed my voice. What is this you have done?

А ви не складете заповіту з ме́шканцями цього краю, їхні же́ртівники порозбиваєте, — та не слухали ви Мого голосу. Що́ це ви зробили?

So now I say, I will not drive them out before you, but they shall become thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare to you.”

І Я теж сказав: Не прожену́ їх від вас, і вони стануть вам те́рням у боки, а їхні боги стануть вам па́сткою“.

As soon as the angel of the Lord spoke these words to all the people of Israel, the people lifted up their voices and wept.

І сталося, як Ангол Господній говорив ці слова́ до всіх Ізраїлевих синів, то народ підніс свій голос, та й заплакав.

And they called the name of that place Bochim.a And they sacrificed there to the Lord.

І назвали ім'я́ того місця: Бохім, і прино́сили там жертви Господе́ві.

The Death of Joshua

When Joshua dismissed the people, the people of Israel went each to his inheritance to take possession of the land.

А Ісус відпустив наро́д, і Ізраїлеві сини розійшлися кожен до свого спа́дку, щоб посісти той край.

7

And the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great work that the Lord had done for Israel.

І служив народ Господе́ві по всі дні Ісуса та по всі дні ста́рших, які продовжили дні свої по Ісусі, що бачили всякий великий чин Господа, якого зробив Він Ізра́їлеві.

And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of 110 years.

І вмер Ісус, син Навинів, раб Господній, віку ста й десяти літ.

9

And they buried him within the boundaries of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the hill country of Ephraim, north of the mountain of Gaash.

І поховали його в ме́жах спа́дщини його, у Тімнат-Хересі, в Єфремових гора́х, на пі́вніч від гори Ґааш.

10

And all that generation also were gathered to their fathers. And there arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord or the work that he had done for Israel.

І також усе це покоління було прилучене до батьків своїх, а по них настало інше покоління, що не знало Господа, а також тих діл, які чинив Він Ізраїлеві.

Israel’s Unfaithfulness

And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and served the Baals.

І Ізраїлеві сини чинили зло в Господніх оча́х, і служили Ваалам.

12

And they abandoned the Lord, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt. They went after other gods, from among the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed down to them. And they provoked the Lord to anger.

12

І вони покинули Господа, Бога батьків своїх, що вивів їх із єгипетського кра́ю, та й пішли за іншими бога́ми, за бога́ми тих народів, що були в їхніх око́лицях, і вклонялися їм, і гніви́ли Господа.

13

They abandoned the Lord and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth.

13

І покинули вони Господа, та й служили Ваа́лові та Аста́ртам.

14

So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he gave them over to plunderers, who plundered them. And he sold them into the hand of their surrounding enemies, so that they could no longer withstand their enemies.

14

І запала́в Господній гнів на Ізраїля, і Він дав їх у руку грабіжників, — і вони їх грабува́ли. І Він передав їх у руку навко́лишніх їхніх ворогів, і вони не могли вже встояти перед своїми ворогами.

15

Whenever they marched out, the hand of the Lord was against them for harm, as the Lord had warned, and as the Lord had sworn to them. And they were in terrible distress.

У всьому, де вони ходили, Господня рука була проти них на зло, як говорив був Господь, і як заприсягнув їм Господь. І Він дуже їх тиснув.

16

The Lord Raises Up Judges

Then the Lord raised up judges, who saved them out of the hand of those who plundered them.

16

І поставив Господь су́ддів, і вони рятували їх від руки їхніх грабіжників.

17

Yet they did not listen to their judges, for they whored after other gods and bowed down to them. They soon turned aside from the way in which their fathers had walked, who had obeyed the commandments of the Lord, and they did not do so.

17

Та вони не слухалися також своїх суддів, бо блудили за іншими богами, і вклонялися їм. Вони скоро відхиля́лися з тієї дороги, якою йшли їхні батьки, щоб слухатися Господніх нака́зів. Вони так не робили!

18

Whenever the Lord raised up judges for them, the Lord was with the judge, and he saved them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge. For the Lord was moved to pity by their groaning because of those who afflicted and oppressed them.

А коли Господь ставив їм суддів, то Господь був із суддею, і рятував їх із руки їхніх ворогів по всі дні того судді́, бо Господь жалував їх через їхній сто́гін через тих, що їх переслідували та гноби́ли їх.

19

But whenever the judge died, they turned back and were more corrupt than their fathers, going after other gods, serving them and bowing down to them. They did not drop any of their practices or their stubborn ways.

І бувало, як умирав той суддя, вони зно́ву псувалися більше від своїх батьків, щоб іти за іншими богами, щоб їм служити та щоб їм вклонятися, і вони не кидали чи́нів своїх та своєї неслухня́ної дороги.

20

So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he said, “Because this people have transgressed my covenant that I commanded their fathers and have not obeyed my voice,

І запалився Господній гнів на Ізраїля, і Він сказав: „За те, що люд цей переступив Мого заповіта, що Я наказав був їхнім батькам, і не слухалися Мого голосу,

21

I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations that Joshua left when he died,

21

тож Я більше не виганятиму перед ними нікого з тих народів, що Ісус позоставив, умира́ючи,

22

in order to test Israel by them, whether they will take care to walk in the way of the Lord as their fathers did, or not.”

22

щоб ви́пробувати ними Ізраїля, — чи держатимуться вони Господньої дороги, щоб нею ходити, як держалися їхні батьки, чи ні.

23

So the Lord left those nations, not driving them out quickly, and he did not give them into the hand of Joshua.

23

І Господь позоставив тих людей, щоб їх скоро не виганяти, і не дав їх у руку Ісусову.
