  • The War of the Kings

    And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of nations;
  • Abram Rescues Lot

About this time war broke out in the region. King Amraphel of Babylonia,a King Arioch of Ellasar, King Kedorlaomer of Elam, and King Tidal of Goiim
  • That these made war with Bera king of Sodom, and with Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela, which is Zoar.
  • fought against King Bera of Sodom, King Birsha of Gomorrah, King Shinab of Admah, King Shemeber of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (also called Zoar).
  • All these were joined together in the vale of Siddim, which is the salt sea.
  • This second group of kings joined forces in Siddim Valley (that is, the valley of the Dead Seab).
  • Twelve years they served Chedorlaomer, and in the thirteenth year they rebelled.
  • For twelve years they had been subject to King Kedorlaomer, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled against him.
  • And in the fourteenth year came Chedorlaomer, and the kings that were with him, and smote the Rephaims in Ashteroth Karnaim, and the Zuzims in Ham, and the Emims in Shaveh Kiriathaim,
  • One year later Kedorlaomer and his allies arrived and defeated the Rephaites at Ashteroth-karnaim, the Zuzites at Ham, the Emites at Shaveh-kiriathaim,
  • And the Horites in their mount Seir, unto Elparan, which is by the wilderness.
  • and the Horites at Mount Seir, as far as El-paran at the edge of the wilderness.
  • And they returned, and came to Enmishpat, which is Kadesh, and smote all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites, that dwelt in Hazezontamar.
  • Then they turned back and came to En-mishpat (now called Kadesh) and conquered all the territory of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites living in Hazazon-tamar.
  • And there went out the king of Sodom, and the king of Gomorrah, and the king of Admah, and the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (the same is Zoar;) and they joined battle with them in the vale of Siddim;
  • Then the rebel kings of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboiim, and Bela (also called Zoar) prepared for battle in the valley of the Dead Sea.c
  • With Chedorlaomer the king of Elam, and with Tidal king of nations, and Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar; four kings with five.
  • They fought against King Kedorlaomer of Elam, King Tidal of Goiim, King Amraphel of Babylonia, and King Arioch of Ellasar — four kings against five.
  • Lot Seized by the Four Kings

And the vale of Siddim was full of slimepits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and fell there; and they that remained fled to the mountain.
  • As it happened, the valley of the Dead Sea was filled with tar pits. And as the army of the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, some fell into the tar pits, while the rest escaped into the mountains.
  • And they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their victuals, and went their way.
  • The victorious invaders then plundered Sodom and Gomorrah and headed for home, taking with them all the spoils of war and the food supplies.
  • And they took Lot, Abram's brother's son, who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed.
  • They also captured Lot — Abram’s nephew who lived in Sodom — and carried off everything he owned.
  • Abram Rescues Lot

And there came one that had escaped, and told Abram the Hebrew; for he dwelt in the plain of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol, and brother of Aner: and these were confederate with Abram.
  • But one of Lot’s men escaped and reported everything to Abram the Hebrew, who was living near the oak grove belonging to Mamre the Amorite. Mamre and his relatives, Eshcol and Aner, were Abram’s allies.
  • And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his trained servants, born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them unto Dan.
  • When Abram heard that his nephew Lot had been captured, he mobilized the 318 trained men who had been born into his household. Then he pursued Kedorlaomer’s army until he caught up with them at Dan.
  • And he divided himself against them, he and his servants, by night, and smote them, and pursued them unto Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus.
  • There he divided his men and attacked during the night. Kedorlaomer’s army fled, but Abram chased them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus.
  • And he brought back all the goods, and also brought again his brother Lot, and his goods, and the women also, and the people.
  • Abram recovered all the goods that had been taken, and he brought back his nephew Lot with his possessions and all the women and other captives.
  • Melchizedek Blesses Abram

And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king's dale.

  • Melchizedek Blesses Abram

After Abram returned from his victory over Kedorlaomer and all his allies, the king of Sodom went out to meet him in the valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).
  • And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
  • And Melchizedek, the king of Salem and a priest of God Most High,d brought Abram some bread and wine.
  • And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:
  • Melchizedek blessed Abram with this blessing:
“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,
    Creator of heaven and earth.
  • And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.
  • And blessed be God Most High,
who has defeated your enemies for you.”
Then Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth of all the goods he had recovered.
  • And the king of Sodom said unto Abram, Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself.
  • The king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give back my people who were captured. But you may keep for yourself all the goods you have recovered.”
  • And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth,
  • Abram replied to the king of Sodom, “I solemnly swear to the LORD, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth,
  • That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich:
  • that I will not take so much as a single thread or sandal thong from what belongs to you. Otherwise you might say, ‘I am the one who made Abram rich.’
  • Save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion.
  • I will accept only what my young warriors have already eaten, and I request that you give a fair share of the goods to my allies — Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre.”
