David's Census

And again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah.

І запалав ізнов Господень гнїв на Ізраїля, й побудив Давида розказати: Йди, перелїчи Ізраїля й Юду:

2

For the king said to Joab the captain of the host, which was with him, Go now through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beersheba, and number ye the people, that I may know the number of the people.

І повелїв царь воєводї Йоабові: Пройди по всїм поколїнням Ізрайлевим од Дана та й до Берсаби й перелїчіть народ, щоб менї знати лїк народу.

And Joab said unto the king, Now the LORD thy God add unto the people, how many soever they be, an hundredfold, and that the eyes of my lord the king may see it: but why doth my lord the king delight in this thing?

І відказав Йоаб цареві: Господь, Бог твій, нехай ще стільки намножить народу, скілько його є, та ще й сто разів стільки, а добродїй мій й царь нехай дожиє сього; та на що й про що захотїлось сього мойму добродїєві й цареві?

4

Notwithstanding the king's word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the host. And Joab and the captains of the host went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel.

Та мусїв Йоаб з отаманнєм чинити по царському наказові. От і пійшов Йоаб із отаманнєм від царя, щоб складати перелїк народу Ізраїльського.

And they passed over Jordan, and pitched in Aroer, on the right side of the city that lieth in the midst of the river of Gad, and toward Jazer:

І перейшли вони Йордань та й роспочали рахубу в Ароері по правому боцї города, що стоїть посеред долини Гадової по дорозї Язеру;

6

Then they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtimhodshi; and they came to Danjaan, and about to Zidon,

Тодї прибули в Галаад та й пройшли до землї Тахтим-Годші, й прибули в Дан-Яан і обійшли Сидон;

7

And came to the strong hold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites: and they went out to the south of Judah, even to Beersheba.

7

І прибули в замок Тирський й в усї городи Хивіїв і Канаанїїв, і вийшли на полуднє Юдеї в Бирсабію;

8

So when they had gone through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.

Пройшовши так по всьому царству, прийшли через девять місяцїв і двайцять день в Ерусалим.

And Joab gave up the sum of the number of the people unto the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.

І подав Йоаб цареві перелїк, що зроблено при переглядї народу, й налїчено Ізрайлитян вісїм сот тисяч мужів сильних і спосібних до війни, а Юдеїв пятьсот тисяч.

Judgment for David's Sin

And David's heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto the LORD, I have sinned greatly in that I have done: and now, I beseech thee, O LORD, take away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.

Та вдарила Давида совість після того, як він звелїв перелїчити люд. І промовив Давид до Господа: Тяжко провинив я тим, що вчинив тепер, але молю тебе, Господи, прости гріх раба твого, бо я вельми (збуяв) нерозумно вчинив.

11

For when David was up in the morning, the word of the LORD came unto the prophet Gad, David's seer, saying,

Як же тепер встав Давид другого дня вранцї, прийшло слово Господнє до пророка Гада, прозори Давидового;

12

Go and say unto David, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things; choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.

12

Ійди й скажи Давидові: Так глаголе Господь: Кладу перед тобою три речі; вибери одну, щоб я скарав тебе.

13

So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thine enemies, while they pursue thee? or that there be three days' pestilence in thy land? now advise, and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me.

І прийшов до Давида Гад, сповістив його про се й рече йому: Виберай, чи має бути в твоїй землї через сїм років голоднеча, чи щоб ти три місяцї втїкав од ворогів твоїх, а вони вганяли за тобою, чи нехай через три днї морова пошесть буде в твоїй землї? Оце ж надумуйсь та й дивись, що маю сказати тому, хто мене послав.

And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of the LORD; for his mercies are great: and let me not fall into the hand of man.

14

І відказує Давид Гадові: Дуже менї тяжко, але нехай впаду я в руки Господнї, милосердє бо його велике; людям же в руки впасти не хочу.

15

Pestilence Sent

So the LORD sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed: and there died of the people from Dan even to Beersheba seventy thousand men.

15

І послав Господь морову пошесть на Ізрайлитян від досьвітку аж по назначений час; і померло люду від Дану до Берсабії сїмдесять тисяч чоловіка.

16

And when the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough: stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD was by the threshingplace of Araunah the Jebusite.

Як простяг же ангел руку свою на Ерусалим, щоб вигубити його, зжалївсь Господь над нуждою та й повелїв ангелові, що вигублював люд: Годї! одведи руку твою. Ангел же Господень був саме тодї на тоцї в Евузія Орни.

17

And David spake unto the LORD when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly: but these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father's house.

Вбачаючи же Давид, як ангел побиває народ, благав Господа, промовляючи: Я провинив, я (пастирь) вчинив переступ, се ж вівцї — чим вони винні? Оберни ж руку твою проти мене й дому мого!

18

David Builds an Altar

And Gad came that day to David, and said unto him, Go up, rear an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Araunah the Jebusite.

18

І прийшов того дня до Давида Гад і рече йому: Йди, спорудь Господеві жертівника на тоцї в Евузія Орни.

19

And David, according to the saying of Gad, went up as the LORD commanded.

19

І пійшов Давид по слову Гадовому, як повелїв Господь.

20

And Araunah looked, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him: and Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the king on his face upon the ground.

20

Споглянувши ж Орна й побачивши, що царь із двором своїм простує до його, вийшов і вклонився перед царем лицем до землї.

21

And Araunah said, Wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy the threshingfloor of thee, to build an altar unto the LORD, that the plague may be stayed from the people.

Питає тодї Орна: Чого йде добродїй й царь мій до раба свого? І відказав Давид: Щоб купити в тебе гумно, й спорудити жертівника Господеві, й так одвернути пошесть від люду.

22

And Araunah said unto David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what seemeth good unto him: behold, here be oxen for burnt sacrifice, and threshing instruments and other instruments of the oxen for wood.

22

І каже тодї Орна Давидові: Нехай мій добродїй й царь візьме що хоче та й принесе жертву. Ось воли на всепаленнє, й вози й ярма волові на дрова.

23

All these things did Araunah, as a king, give unto the king. And Araunah said unto the king, The LORD thy God accept thee.

23

Се все дає, мій царю, Орна цареві, а Господь, Бог твій, нехай прийме обіт твій.

24

And the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will surely buy it of thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt offerings unto the LORD my God of that which doth cost me nothing. So David bought the threshingfloor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

Однак же царь відказав Орнї: Нї, я куплю в тебе за гроші, й не хочу приносити Господеві всепаленнє, що менї досталось дармо. От і купив Давид гумно, й воли за пятьдесять срібних секлів.

25

And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the LORD was intreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.

25

І спорудив там Давид Господеві жертівника й принїс всепаленнє й мирну жертву. І Господь змилосердився над країною, та й одвернув погубу від Ізраїля.
