The Work is Ridiculed

But it came to pass, that when Sanballat heard that we builded the wall, he was wroth, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews.

And he spake before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What do these feeble Jews? will they fortify themselves? will they sacrifice? will they make an end in a day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish which are burned?

Санаваллат поговорил со своими друзьями и с войском в Самарии. Он сказал: "Что делают эти несчастные евреи? Они думают, что мы оставим их в покое? Они думают, что будут приносить жертвы? Может быть, они думают, что закончат строить в один день? Они не могут оживить камни из этой груды пепла и грязи!"

Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, Even that which they build, if a fox go up, he shall even break down their stone wall.

Товия Аммонитянин, который был с Санаваллатом, сказал: "Что эти евреи строят? Даже если маленькая лиса взберётся на их каменную стену, она разрушит её!"

Hear, O our God; for we are despised: and turn their reproach upon their own head, and give them for a prey in the land of captivity:

Неемия помолился Богу и сказал: "Боже наш, услышь нашу молитву. Эти люди ненавидят нас. Санаваллат и Товия оскорбляют нас. Сделай так, чтобы эти беды случились с ними. Опозорь их, как людей, взятых в плен.

And cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before thee: for they have provoked thee to anger before the builders.

Не снимай с них вины и не прощай грехи, которые они совершили перед Тобой. Они оскорбляли строителей.

So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work.

Мы строили стену Иерусалима вокруг всего города. Но она была построена только до половины той высоты, какой должна быть. Мы смогли сделать так много лишь потому, что люди работали от всего сердца.

But it came to pass, that when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth,

Но Санаваллат, Товия, аравитяне, аммонитяне и люди из Азота очень сердились. Они слышали, что люди продолжают строить стены Иерусалима и заделывают дыры в стене.

And conspired all of them together to come and to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it.

И вот все эти люди собрались вместе и устроили заговор против Иерусалима. Они собирались прийти и сразиться с городом.

Discouragement Overcome

Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.

Но мы молились нашему Богу. Мы поставили стражников на стены следить днём и ночью, чтобы мы были готовы к встрече с этими людьми".

And Judah said, The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall.

И сказали в это время иудеи: "Работники устают. Здесь слишком много грязи и пепла. Мы не можем продолжать строить стену.

And our adversaries said, They shall not know, neither see, till we come in the midst among them, and slay them, and cause the work to cease.

И наши враги говорят: "Прежде чем евреи узнают или увидят нас, мы будем среди них. Мы перебьём их, и это остановит работу".

12

And it came to pass, that when the Jews which dwelt by them came, they said unto us ten times, From all places whence ye shall return unto us they will be upon you.

Затем приходили евреи, жившие среди наших врагов, и десять раз говорили нам: "Наши враги окружают нас. Они везде, куда бы мы ни повернулись".

13

Therefore set I in the lower places behind the wall, and on the higher places, I even set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.

Тогда я поставил людей в самых низких местах вдоль стены и возле дыр в стене. Я поставил их по семьям, с мечами, копьями и луками.

And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.

Я осмотрел всё вокруг. Затем я встал и обратился к знатным семьям, начальникам и остальным людям. Я сказал: "Не бойтесь наших врагов. Помните нашего Господина, Господа великого и могущественного! Вы должны сражаться за ваших братьев, сыновей и дочерей! Вы должны сражаться за ваших жён и ваши дома!"

And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work.

Тогда наши враги услышали, что мы знаем об их планах, и узнали, что Бог разрушил их. А мы все вернулись работать к стене. Каждый вернулся на своё место и выполнял свою работу.

And it came to pass from that time forth, that the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.

С того дня половина моих людей работала у стены. Другая половина была на страже, вооружённая копьями, щитами, луками и латами. Военачальники стояли за всем народом Иудеи, который строил стену.

They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon.

Строители и их помощники в одной руке держали свои инструменты, а в другой руке держали оружие.

For the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. And he that sounded the trumpet was by me.

У каждого строителя, когда он работал, на боку висел меч. Возле меня стоял трубач, чтобы предупредить людей.

And I said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, The work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another.

Я сказал знатным семьям, начальникам и остальным людям: "Это очень большая работа, и мы растянулись далеко вдоль стены. Мы находимся далеко друг от друга.

20

In what place therefore ye hear the sound of the trumpet, resort ye thither unto us: our God shall fight for us.

Если вы услышите звук трубы, бегите к тому месту. Мы встретимся там все вместе, и Бог будет сражаться за нас!"

21

So we laboured in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared.

Так мы продолжали работать над стеной Иерусалима, и половина людей держали копья. Мы работали от зари до появления звёзд.

Likewise at the same time said I unto the people, Let every one with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and labour on the day.

So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard which followed me, none of us put off our clothes, saving that every one put them off for washing.
