Zophar Rebukes Job

Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said,

1

І промовив Зофар із Нааму й сказав:

Should not the multitude of words be answered? and should a man full of talk be justified?

2

Чи вже ж на безлїч слів не треба давати одвіту? Чи вже ж говорун мусить бути праведний?

3

Should thy lies make men hold their peace? and when thou mockest, shall no man make thee ashamed?

Нїби твоє пусте базїканнє заставить людей мовчати, щоб ти на глум підіймав, а не було кому тебе пристидати?

4

For thou hast said, My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in thine eyes.

4

Ти говорив: Я суджу право, й чист я в тебе перед очима.

5

But oh that God would speak, and open his lips against thee;

5

А коли б так Бог схотїв промовити, й отворив уста свої до тебе,

6

And that he would shew thee the secrets of wisdom, that they are double to that which is! Know therefore that God exacteth of thee less than thine iniquity deserveth.

Та показав тобі тайни премудростї, й що тобі вдвоє більше належало б терпіти! Тим то знай, що Бог дещо з проступків твоїх подав у непамять.

Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?

Чи то ж ти зможеш умом ізбагнути Бога? Чи зможеш Вседержителя (путь) до конця прослїдити?

It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than hell; what canst thou know?

Та ж він висший небес, — що ж ти вдїяти зможеш? глибше він всїх безодень, — що можеш зрозуміти?

9

The measure thereof is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.

Міра його довша нїж земля, ширша над моря.

10

If he cut off, and shut up, or gather together, then who can hinder him?

10

Вхопить кого й закує в окови та поставить на суд, хто відверне його?

11

For he knoweth vain men: he seeth wickedness also; will he not then consider it?

Бо він знає людей лицемірних, і бачить проступок, — та й чи ж не зверне на його уваги?

12

For vain man would be wise, though man be born like a wild ass's colt.

12

Та пустоголовий чоловік мудрує, хоч людина родиться так, як осля дике.

13

If thou prepare thine heart, and stretch out thine hands toward him;

13

Але коли ти очистиш серце твоє й простягнеш ід йому руки твої,

14

If iniquity be in thine hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in thy tabernacles.

14

І коли нечисть на руцї в тебе, а ти відкинеш її, й не дозволиш, щоб проступок пробував у шатрі твойму,

15

For then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot; yea, thou shalt be stedfast, and shalt not fear:

15

Тодї піднімеш (сьміло) незамаргане лице твоє, й стояти меш твердо й не будеш боятись.

16

Because thou shalt forget thy misery, and remember it as waters that pass away:

16

І тодї забудеш біду, й хиба, як про воду, що протекла, згадувати меш про неї.

17

And thine age shall be clearer than the noonday; thou shalt shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning.

17

І яснїйше, анїж південь, попливе життє твоє, й прояснїєш, мов ранок.

18

And thou shalt be secure, because there is hope; yea, thou shalt dig about thee, and thou shalt take thy rest in safety.

18

Певність у тебе тодї із надїєю буде; ти захищен, і можеш безпечно почивати.

19

Also thou shalt lie down, and none shall make thee afraid; yea, many shall make suit unto thee.

19

Будеш лежати собі, й не буде нїкого, хто б тебе страшив, і многі стануть запобігати (ласки) у тебе.

20

But the eyes of the wicked shall fail, and they shall not escape, and their hope shall be as the giving up of the ghost.

20

Очі ж ледачих (від плачу) потемнїють, і охорона їх пропаде, й надїя їх зникне.
