King James Bible

New King James Version

  • Job Acknowledges the Finality of Death

    Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.
  • Job Speaks of Life’s Woes

    “Man who is born of woman
    Is of few days and full of [a]trouble.
  • He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.
  • He comes forth like a flower and fades away;
    He flees like a shadow and does not continue.
  • And dost thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee?
  • And do You open Your eyes on such a one,
    And bring [b]me to judgment with Yourself?
  • Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.
  • Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean?
    No one!
  • Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;
  • Since his days are determined,
    The number of his months is with You;
    You have appointed his limits, so that he cannot pass.
  • Turn from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as an hireling, his day.
  • Look away from him that he may [c]rest,
    Till like a hired man he finishes his day.
  • For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.
  • “For there is hope for a tree,
    If it is cut down, that it will sprout again,
    And that its tender shoots will not cease.
  • Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;
  • Though its root may grow old in the earth,
    And its stump may die in the ground,
  • Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.
  • Yet at the scent of water it will bud
    And bring forth branches like a plant.
  • But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?
  • But man dies and [d]is laid away;
    Indeed he [e]breathes his last
    And where is he?
  • As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:
  • As water disappears from the sea,
    And a river becomes parched and dries up,
  • So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.
  • So man lies down and does not rise.
    Till the heavens are no more,
    They will not awake
    Nor be roused from their sleep.
  • O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!
  • “Oh, that You would hide me in the grave,
    That You would conceal me until Your wrath is past,
    That You would appoint me a set time, and remember me!
  • If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.
  • If a man dies, shall he live again?
    All the days of my hard service I will wait,
    Till my change comes.
  • Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.
  • You shall call, and I will answer You;
    You shall desire the work of Your hands.
  • For now thou numberest my steps: dost thou not watch over my sin?
  • For now You number my steps,
    But do not watch over my sin.
  • My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou sewest up mine iniquity.
  • My transgression is sealed up in a bag,
    And You [f]cover my iniquity.
  • And surely the mountain falling cometh to nought, and the rock is removed out of his place.
  • “But as a mountain falls and crumbles away,
    And as a rock is moved from its place;
  • The waters wear the stones: thou washest away the things which grow out of the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man.
  • As water wears away stones,
    And as torrents wash away the soil of the earth;
    So You destroy the hope of man.
  • Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.
  • You prevail forever against him, and he passes on;
    You change his countenance and send him away.
  • His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.
  • His sons come to honor, and he does not know it;
    They are brought low, and he does not perceive it.
  • But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.
  • But his flesh will be in pain over it,
    And his soul will mourn over it.”
