Job Acknowledges the Finality of Death
Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.
Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.
З жінки родиться чоловік, і короткий вік свій у журбі проводить;
He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.
Квіткою він виходить та й поникає; тїнню пробігає й не зупиняєсь.
And dost thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee?
І на такого ти отвираєш очі твої, і зовеш мене на суд із тобою?
Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.
Хто з нечистого може чистим родитись? Анї один.
Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;
Коли ж йому днї визначені, й число місяцїв його в тебе, коли ти назначив йому гряницю, що її не переступить,
Turn from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as an hireling, his day.
То відступи від його, так, позирни куди геть, нехай він одпочине, покіль, як той поденщик, не скінчить дня свого.
For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.
Дереву є хоч надїя, що воно, й зрубане, знов одродиться, й пагонцї з його одростати не перестануть;
Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;
Та хоч його корінь в землї й перетрюхне й пень його завмре в поросї,
Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.
Але, як тільки почує воду, воно пустить паростки й поросте галуззєм, наче б новопосаджене; —
But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?
А чоловік, як умре, розпадає ся; відойшов, і де він подївся?
As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:
Води зникають із озера, й ріка посякає й висихає:
So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.
Так і людина ляже й не встане; покіль конець небесам, не пробудиться й не підоймесь із сну свого.
O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!
О, коли б ти да сховав мене в преисподнїй і там держав мене, аж покіль гнїв твій перейде, й положив реченець, і спогадав знов про мене!
If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.
Засне людина, та чи знов оживе ж коли небудь? Через усї днї визначеного менї часу дожидав би я, покіль прийшла б менї зміна.
Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.
Ти кликнув би, а я дав би відповідь тобі, й ти подав би ласку твору рук твоїх;
For now thou numberest my steps: dost thou not watch over my sin?
Бо тодї ти лїчив би кроки мої, та не підстерігав би гріха мого;
My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou sewest up mine iniquity.
Ти б запечатав тодї переступ мій, й провину мою закрив би.
And surely the mountain falling cometh to nought, and the rock is removed out of his place.
Та як гора, падаючи, розсипається, й скала сходить з місця свого;
The waters wear the stones: thou washest away the things which grow out of the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man.
Як вода стирає каміннє, а розлив її змиває пил земний, так і надїю людську ти в нїщо обертаєш.
Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.
Ти тїсниш його до кінця; змінюєш вид його й відсилаєш.
His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.
Честь його дїтям, чи нї, він того не знає, понижені вони — йому те байдуже;
