King James Bible

New Living Translation

  • Job: My Redeemer Lives

    Then Job answered and said,
  • Job’s Sixth Speech: A Response to Bildad

    Then Job spoke again:
  • How long will ye vex my soul, and break me in pieces with words?
  • “How long will you torture me?
How long will you try to crush me with your words?
  • These ten times have ye reproached me: ye are not ashamed that ye make yourselves strange to me.
  • You have already insulted me ten times.
You should be ashamed of treating me so badly.
  • And be it indeed that I have erred, mine error remaineth with myself.
  • Even if I have sinned,
that is my concern, not yours.
  • If indeed ye will magnify yourselves against me, and plead against me my reproach:
  • You think you’re better than I am,
using my humiliation as evidence of my sin.
  • Know now that God hath overthrown me, and hath compassed me with his net.
  • But it is God who has wronged me,
    capturing me in his net.a
  • Behold, I cry out of wrong, but I am not heard: I cry aloud, but there is no judgment.
  • “I cry out, ‘Help!’ but no one answers me.
I protest, but there is no justice.
  • He hath fenced up my way that I cannot pass, and he hath set darkness in my paths.
  • God has blocked my way so I cannot move.
He has plunged my path into darkness.
  • He hath stripped me of my glory, and taken the crown from my head.
  • He has stripped me of my honor
and removed the crown from my head.
  • He hath destroyed me on every side, and I am gone: and mine hope hath he removed like a tree.
  • He has demolished me on every side, and I am finished.
He has uprooted my hope like a fallen tree.
  • He hath also kindled his wrath against me, and he counteth me unto him as one of his enemies.
  • His fury burns against me;
he counts me as an enemy.
  • His troops come together, and raise up their way against me, and encamp round about my tabernacle.
  • His troops advance.
They build up roads to attack me.
They camp all around my tent.
  • He hath put my brethren far from me, and mine acquaintance are verily estranged from me.
  • “My relatives stay far away,
and my friends have turned against me.
  • My kinsfolk have failed, and my familiar friends have forgotten me.
  • My family is gone,
and my close friends have forgotten me.
  • They that dwell in mine house, and my maids, count me for a stranger: I am an alien in their sight.
  • My servants and maids consider me a stranger.
I am like a foreigner to them.
  • I called my servant, and he gave me no answer; I intreated him with my mouth.
  • When I call my servant, he doesn’t come;
I have to plead with him!
  • My breath is strange to my wife, though I intreated for the children's sake of mine own body.
  • My breath is repulsive to my wife.
I am rejected by my own family.
  • Yea, young children despised me; I arose, and they spake against me.
  • Even young children despise me.
When I stand to speak, they turn their backs on me.
  • All my inward friends abhorred me: and they whom I loved are turned against me.
  • My close friends detest me.
Those I loved have turned against me.
  • My bone cleaveth to my skin and to my flesh, and I am escaped with the skin of my teeth.
  • I have been reduced to skin and bones
and have escaped death by the skin of my teeth.
  • Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, O ye my friends; for the hand of God hath touched me.
  • “Have mercy on me, my friends, have mercy,
for the hand of God has struck me.
  • Why do ye persecute me as God, and are not satisfied with my flesh?
  • Must you also persecute me, like God does?
Haven’t you chewed me up enough?
  • Oh that my words were now written! oh that they were printed in a book!
  • “Oh, that my words could be recorded.
Oh, that they could be inscribed on a monument,
  • That they were graven with an iron pen and lead in the rock for ever!
  • carved with an iron chisel and filled with lead,
    engraved forever in the rock.
  • For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:
  • “But as for me, I know that my Redeemer lives,
and he will stand upon the earth at last.
  • And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God:
  • And after my body has decayed,
yet in my body I will see God!b
  • Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me.
  • I will see him for myself.
Yes, I will see him with my own eyes.
I am overwhelmed at the thought!
  • But ye should say, Why persecute we him, seeing the root of the matter is found in me?
  • “How dare you go on persecuting me,
    saying, ‘It’s his own fault’?
  • Be ye afraid of the sword: for wrath bringeth the punishments of the sword, that ye may know there is a judgment.
  • You should fear punishment yourselves,
    for your attitude deserves punishment.
Then you will know that there is indeed a judgment.”
