How long will ye vex my soul, and break me in pieces with words?
Докіль мучити мете душу мою й торгати мене словами?
These ten times have ye reproached me: ye are not ashamed that ye make yourselves strange to me.
Вже ж ви й так десять раз соромили мене; чи ж вам не стидно, так тїснити мене?
And be it indeed that I have erred, mine error remaineth with myself.
Коли я й справдї провинився, то провина моя на менї зостанесь.
If indeed ye will magnify yourselves against me, and plead against me my reproach:
А коли вам так любо, величатись надо мною й докоряти менї осоромленнєм моїм,
Know now that God hath overthrown me, and hath compassed me with his net.
То знайте, що се Бог поверг мене 'д землї й обвів кругом мене сїть свою.
Behold, I cry out of wrong, but I am not heard: I cry aloud, but there is no judgment.
Ось, я кричу: кривда! й нїхто не чує; я голошу, а нема суду (справедливого).
He hath fenced up my way that I cannot pass, and he hath set darkness in my paths.
Він перегородив менї путь, і я не маю переходу, й розпростер темноту на стежки мої.
He hath stripped me of my glory, and taken the crown from my head.
Зволїк із мене славу мою й зняв вінець із голови моєї.
He hath destroyed me on every side, and I am gone: and mine hope hath he removed like a tree.
Навкруги опустошив мене, й я відходжу; й, неначе деревину, вирвав надїю мою.
He hath also kindled his wrath against me, and he counteth me unto him as one of his enemies.
Він запалав проти мене гнївом своїм, і в одно повернув мене з ворогами своїми.
His troops come together, and raise up their way against me, and encamp round about my tabernacle.
Полки його* притягли купою й справили дорогу собі на мене, та обсїли кругом намет мій.
He hath put my brethren far from me, and mine acquaintance are verily estranged from me.
Браттє моє оддалив від мене, а знакомі мої цураються мене.
My kinsfolk have failed, and my familiar friends have forgotten me.
Рід мій покинув мене, й знакомі мої забули про мене.
They that dwell in mine house, and my maids, count me for a stranger: I am an alien in their sight.
Домівники мої й служебки мої вважають усї за чужого мене; приходнем став я в очах їх.
I called my servant, and he gave me no answer; I intreated him with my mouth.
Кличу раба мого, — він не озивається; мушу моїми його благати устами.
My breath is strange to my wife, though I intreated for the children's sake of mine own body.
Жінка гидує диханнєм моїм, і менї треба вмоляти її згадкою на дїти від тїла мого.
Yea, young children despised me; I arose, and they spake against me.
Ба й малі дїти мене за покидьку вважають: я підведусь, а вони збиткуються надо мною.
All my inward friends abhorred me: and they whom I loved are turned against me.
Всї, що до грудї моєї тулились, гордують мною, а ті, кого я любив, проти мене встали.
My bone cleaveth to my skin and to my flesh, and I am escaped with the skin of my teeth.
Поприсихали кістки до кожі й до тїла мого, зосталась тільки кожа около зубів моїх:
Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, O ye my friends; for the hand of God hath touched me.
О, змилосердьтесь, помилуйте мене хоч ви, мої друзї, бо рука Божа побила мене!
Why do ye persecute me as God, and are not satisfied with my flesh?
За що й ви ще мене женете, так як Бог, наче б не могли насититись тїлом моїм?
Oh that my words were now written! oh that they were printed in a book!
О, коли б то слова мої написано! в книзї коли б можна їх начертати рильцем залїзним на олові, —
That they were graven with an iron pen and lead in the rock for ever!
Про вічні часи на каменї видовбати!
For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:
Я знаю** — Відкупитель мій живе, й він у послїдний день підійме з пороху отсю розпадаючуся кожу мою,
And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God:
І я в тїлї мойму побачу Бога.
Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me.
Я самий вбачу його; мої очі, не очі когось другого, побачать його. Аж ниє серце в грудї моїй!
But ye should say, Why persecute we him, seeing the root of the matter is found in me?
Вам про мене сказати б: За що нам гнати його? Як коли б корінь злого знайдено в менї!
