Eliphaz Accuses and Exhorts Job
Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,
Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,
І відказав Елифаз із Теману й промовив:
Can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself?
Чи вже ж може людина доставляти Богу користь? Мудрий самому собі добра запобігає.
Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? or is it gain to him, that thou makest thy ways perfect?
Що за користь у тому про Вседержителя, як ти живеш без гріха? І буде ж він мати хосен із того, що ти держишся доріг невинностї?
Will he reprove thee for fear of thee? will he enter with thee into judgment?
Чи може він, боячись тебе, стане з тобою до розправи, пійде судитись із тобою?
Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities infinite?
Мабуть, неправди твої надто великі, й проступкам твоїм нема й кінця.
For thou hast taken a pledge from thy brother for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing.
Видно, ти брав заклади з браття твого за дрібницю й з пів-нагих здирав послїдущу одежу.
Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry.
Жажденому не давав ти й водицї напитись, а голодущого прогонив без куска хлїба;
But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it.
Землю давав тілько дужим під оселю, й тільки значний який осїдавсь на нїй.
Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.
Вдови одправляв єси з нїчим, а сироти полишав із порожними руками.
Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee;
За се кругом тебе силки й стревожив тебе ненадїйний страх,
Or darkness, that thou canst not see; and abundance of waters cover thee.
Та темрява, в якій ти нїчого не бачиш, і глибінь вод покрила тебе.
Is not God in the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are!
Чи Бог не висше небес? Глянь у гору на зорі, як вони високо!
And thou sayest, How doth God know? can he judge through the dark cloud?
Ти ж кажеш: Що знає Бог? Як він кріз хмарі розсудить?
Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he seeth not; and he walketh in the circuit of heaven.
Хмарі — завіса його; ходить по небу, не бачить.
Hast thou marked the old way which wicked men have trodden?
Чи ж ти йдеш стежкою давнїх людей, якими ходили люде беззаконні,
Which were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflown with a flood:
Що перед часом погибли, коли вода, розлившись, їх підмила?
Which said unto God, Depart from us: and what can the Almighty do for them?
Вони говорили до Бога: Оступись од нас! і думали: що вдїє їм Вседержитель?
Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel of the wicked is far from me.
Бо він сповняв доми їх добром. — Та звичай безбожників нехай буде далеким від мене! —
The righteous see it, and are glad: and the innocent laugh them to scorn.
Бачили се праведні і всьміхались, а невинні сьміялись із них:
Whereas our substance is not cut down, but the remnant of them the fire consumeth.
Злюки ті — наче б вигублені вже, а нащадки їх — так, як би вже пожер огонь!
Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.
Зблизись же до його — мир тобі буде; з того вийде добро тобі.
Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.
Прийми з уст його закон, і бери слова його до серця собі.
If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles.
Як вернешся до Вседержителя твого, — станеш, мов відбудований; віддалиш беззаконність від пробутку твого, —
Then shalt thou lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks.
Будеш за порох мати блистюче срібло, а проміж каміннєм — золото Офирське.
Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver.
І буде тодї Вседержитель твоїм золотом і блистючим сріблом у тебе;
For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto God.
Бо тодї будеш радуватись Вседержителем твоїм, і піднімеш до Бога лице твоє.
Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows.
Помолишся до його, а він вислухає тебе, й віддаси подячні обітницї твої.
Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.
Що нї задумаєш, воно станеться тобі, а над дорогами твоїми буде сияти сьвітло.
When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person.
А коли хто й принижений буде, а ти скажеш: піднесись! то Бог спасе похиленого лицем;
