Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night in which it was said, There is a man child conceived.
"Хочу, чтоб день, когда я родился, навеки был потерян; чтоб никогда не наступала ночь, когда сказали: "Это мальчик!"
Let that day be darkness; let not God regard it from above, neither let the light shine upon it.
Хочу, чтоб темным был тот день навек. Хочу, чтоб Бог наверху забыл об этом дне. Хочу, чтоб свет в тот день не засиял.
Let darkness and the shadow of death stain it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it.
Хочу, чтоб свет тот оставался темным, как смерть. Хочу, чтоб скрыли облака тот день. Чтоб испугался черных облаков свет дня, в который я родился!
As for that night, let darkness seize upon it; let it not be joined unto the days of the year, let it not come into the number of the months.
Хочу, чтоб темнота удерживала ночь, чтоб не было её в календаре. Пусть месяц ни один её не примет.
Lo, let that night be solitary, let no joyful voice come therein.
Не дай той ночи сделать ничего. Пускай не прозвучит в ней крик счастливый.
Let them curse it that curse the day, who are ready to raise up their mourning.
Колдуны всегда хотят Левиафана разбудить. Так пусть они проклянут тот день И не дадут ему настать.
Let the stars of the twilight thereof be dark; let it look for light, but have none; neither let it see the dawning of the day:
Пусть в утро это будет темною звезда. Пусть утреннего света ждёт та ночь, но никогда прийти ему не даст. И первых солнечных лучей не дай ему увидеть.
Because it shut not up the doors of my mother's womb, nor hid sorrow from mine eyes.
Поскольку эта ночь не помешала рожденью моему и не смогла меня остановить, чтоб не увидел я все мои беды.
Why died I not from the womb? why did I not give up the ghost when I came out of the belly?
И почему в момент рожденья я не умер? И почему, родившись, я остался жить?
Why did the knees prevent me? or why the breasts that I should suck?
Зачем меня держала на коленях и вскармливала мать моя?
For now should I have lain still and been quiet, I should have slept: then had I been at rest,
Ведь, если б умер я, родившись, сейчас бы был я в мире, в могиле бы я спал
With kings and counsellers of the earth, which built desolate places for themselves;
со всеми мудрецами и царями, кто жил в далёком прошлом на земле. Те люди строили себе дома, которые разрушены сегодня.
Or with princes that had gold, who filled their houses with silver:
Хотел бы похороненным быть с теми, кто золотом и серебром наполнил свои могилы.
Or as an hidden untimely birth I had not been; as infants which never saw light.
Ну почему я не был выкидышем тем, кто в землю лег, едва лишь народившись? Хотел бы я быть тем младенцем, что дневного света никогда не видел.
There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary be at rest.
Плохие люди прекращают делать зло, когда они уже в могилах. И люди, устающие от жизни, в могилах обретают свой покой.
There the prisoners rest together; they hear not the voice of the oppressor.
В могиле даже узники свободны: они не слышат стражников, кричащих на них.
The small and great are there; and the servant is free from his master.
В могилах люди все — и знатный, и безродный, — и от хозяина свободен даже раб.
Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul;
Зачем, чтоб видеть свет дневной, страданья продлевать? Зачем, если душа его горька, ему даётся жизнь?
Which long for death, but it cometh not; and dig for it more than for hid treasures;
Те люди смерти ждут, а смерть к ним не идёт, Скорбящий ищет смерти больше, чем спрятанных богатств.
Which rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave?
Такие люди были б счастливы найти свои могилы. Найдя свои гробницы, эти люди исполнились бы радости.
Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, and whom God hath hedged in?
Но будущее их в секрете держит Бог и, охраняя их, стеною окружает.
For my sighing cometh before I eat, and my roarings are poured out like the waters.
Когда приходит время есть, вздыхаю я, но не от радости — от грусти. И жалобы мои текут рекой.
For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.
Боялся я, чтоб не произошло со мной какого-то несчастья. И вот оно произошло! Чего боялся я, то и случилось.
