Knowest thou the time when the wild goats of the rock bring forth? or canst thou mark when the hinds do calve?

Знаєш ти годину, коли козам на скелях котитись, і чи постеріг коли, як сугачки (ланї) роджають?
Canst thou number the months that they fulfil? or knowest thou the time when they bring forth?
Чи ти лїчиш місяцї, що ходять вони вагітними? чи знаєш час породу їх?
They bow themselves, they bring forth their young ones, they cast out their sorrows.
Вони корчаться, роджаючи дїти свої, викидаючи плод свій;
Their young ones are in good liking, they grow up with corn; they go forth, and return not unto them.
Дїти їх приходять борзо до сили, ростуть у полі, відходять і не вертають до них.
Who hath sent out the wild ass free? or who hath loosed the bands of the wild ass?
Хто пустив дикого осла на волю й хто розвязав пута йому?
Whose house I have made the wilderness, and the barren land his dwellings.
Се ж я назначив степ на пробуток і солонцї на прожиток йому.
He scorneth the multitude of the city, neither regardeth he the crying of the driver.
Сьміх — йому товпи міські, й не чує крику погонича,
The range of the mountains is his pasture, and he searcheth after every green thing.
По горах шукає собі паші і вганяє за всякою зеленню.
Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or abide by thy crib?
А однорог, чи схоче він служити тобі, та й чи ж заночує він при яслах у тебе?
Canst thou bind the unicorn with his band in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after thee?
Чи міг би ти однорога привязати шнуром до борони, й чи буде він ріллю поза тобою волочити?
Wilt thou trust him, because his strength is great? or wilt thou leave thy labour to him?
Чи ти спустишся на його, тим що в його велика сила, й полишиш на його роботу твою?
Wilt thou believe him, that he will bring home thy seed, and gather it into thy barn?
Чи можеш сподїватись, що він посїв тобі верне, й звезе на тік у тебе?
Gavest thou the goodly wings unto the peacocks? or wings and feathers unto the ostrich?
Чи то ти дав красні пера павові, й піррє та пух струсеві?
Which leaveth her eggs in the earth, and warmeth them in dust,
Він покидає яйця свої на землї й вигріває їх у пісцї,
And forgetteth that the foot may crush them, or that the wild beast may break them.
Та й забуває, що нога може роздавити їх або дикий зьвір розтоптати;
She is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not hers: her labour is in vain without fear;
До дїтей своїх він жорстокий, мов би се не його дїти, й байдуже йому, що труд його* буде даремний;
Because God hath deprived her of wisdom, neither hath he imparted to her understanding.
Бо Бог не дав йому розуму й не вдїлив глузду;
What time she lifteth up herself on high, she scorneth the horse and his rider.
(Тільки втїкаючи) коли підніме крила, — сьміх йому кінь і їздець його.
Hast thou given the horse strength? hast thou clothed his neck with thunder?
Хиба то ти дав коневі силу й прикрасив шию його гривою?
Canst thou make him afraid as a grasshopper? the glory of his nostrils is terrible.
Чи можеш його спудити, неначе сарану? Хропіт ноздер його будить страх;
He paweth in the valley, and rejoiceth in his strength: he goeth on to meet the armed men.
Риє він копитом землю й радїє своєю силою; виступає зустріч зброї;
He mocketh at fear, and is not affrighted; neither turneth he back from the sword.
З небезпеки він (в бою) сьміється, не подасться й перед мечем, на бік не одвернесь.
The quiver rattleth against him, the glittering spear and the shield.
Сагайдак над ним гуркоче, спис блищить і дарда;
He swalloweth the ground with fierceness and rage: neither believeth he that it is the sound of the trumpet.
Палає, яриться, наче їсть землю й не встоїть при голосї труби;
He saith among the trumpets, Ha, ha; and he smelleth the battle afar off, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting.
Голос труби він ржаннєм витає: гу! гу! надалеки чує битву, грімкий голос отамання й галас.
Doth the hawk fly by thy wisdom, and stretch her wings toward the south?
Чи се твоєю мудростю яструб лїтає й на полуднє крила направляє?
Doth the eagle mount up at thy command, and make her nest on high?
Чи се ти звелїв орлові високо лїтати й гнїздо собі на висотї звивати?
She dwelleth and abideth on the rock, upon the crag of the rock, and the strong place.
Він живе на скелї й ночує на верхах зубчастих, на місцях неприступних;
From thence she seeketh the prey, and her eyes behold afar off.
Звідти висмотрює він собі їжу; очи його видять далеко;
