Oh that my grief were throughly weighed, and my calamity laid in the balances together!
"Если бы было можно взвесить мои страданья, и все мои беды положить на чашу весов,
For now it would be heavier than the sand of the sea: therefore my words are swallowed up.
тогда бы вы поняли всю мою скорбь. Она тяжелее была бы морского песка всех морей. Поэтому кажутся глупыми речи мои.
For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison whereof drinketh up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me.
Стрелы Всемогущего Бога во мне. Душа моя чувствует яд этих стрел. Страшное Божье оружье направлено против меня.
Doth the wild ass bray when he hath grass? or loweth the ox over his fodder?
Легко вам говорить слова, когда не с вами всё случилось. Не жалуется и ослица, когда вокруг неё трава. Корове жаловаться нечего, когда еда есть у неё.
Can that which is unsavoury be eaten without salt? or is there any taste in the white of an egg?
Без соли любая еда теряет свой вкус. Разве белок яйца имеет вкус?
The things that my soul refused to touch are as my sorrowful meat.
Нет! Я отказываюсь глотать такое! Такая пища для меня — болезнь. Вот почему ваши слова для меня то же, что эта еда,
Oh that I might have my request; and that God would grant me the thing that I long for!
Хотел бы я иметь то, что прошу, чтоб дал мне Господь то, чего желаю.
Even that it would please God to destroy me; that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off!
Хотел бы я, чтоб Бог меня разбил, и, руку протянув, убил бы.
Then should I yet have comfort; yea, I would harden myself in sorrow: let him not spare; for I have not concealed the words of the Holy One.
И, если Бог меня убьёт, одним я буду утешаться: что даже в боли никогда не отвергал все повеления Святого.
What is my strength, that I should hope? and what is mine end, that I should prolong my life?
Покинули силы меня, и нет надежды, что буду жить. Не знаю, что ещё со мною случится, и терпеливым быть причины нет.
Is my strength the strength of stones? or is my flesh of brass?
Не крепок я, как камень иль скала, и вовсе не из бронзы моё тело.
Is not my help in me? and is wisdom driven quite from me?
Нет силы у меня себе помочь-опору у меня совсем отняли.
To him that is afflicted pity should be shewed from his friend; but he forsaketh the fear of the Almighty.
Друзья должны добры быть к человеку, когда к нему несчастия приходят. И человек быть должен верен другу, пусть даже если отвернулся этот друг от Бога Всемогущего.
My brethren have dealt deceitfully as a brook, and as the stream of brooks they pass away;
Но не были вы, братья мои, верными, на вас я положиться не могу. Изменчивы вы, как ручьи,
Which are blackish by reason of the ice, and wherein the snow is hid:
что разливаются от тающего снега и битых льдов.
What time they wax warm, they vanish: when it is hot, they are consumed out of their place.
Когда же наступают дни жары, приостанавливаются те ручьи и исчезают.
The paths of their way are turned aside; they go to nothing, and perish.
Все изгибы пустыни повторяют торговцы, а потом теряются!
The troops of Tema looked, the companies of Sheba waited for them.
Купцы из Фемана ищут воду, с надеждой глядят идущие из Шевы.
They were confounded because they had hoped; they came thither, and were ashamed.
И не было у них сомненья, что найдётся вода, но разочарованье их постигло.
For now ye are nothing; ye see my casting down, and are afraid.
Вот так и вы, подобно тем ручьям, на беды мои смотрите с испугом.
Did I say, Bring unto me? or, Give a reward for me of your substance?
Просил ли я о помощи у вас? Но вы свои советы мне давали.
Or, Deliver me from the enemy's hand? or, Redeem me from the hand of the mighty?
Просил ли я, чтоб вы меня спасли и от врагов, и от людей жестоких?
Teach me, and I will hold my tongue: and cause me to understand wherein I have erred.
Теперь же, покажите мне, в чём я не прав, и буду я спокоен.
How forcible are right words! but what doth your arguing reprove?
Правдивые слова сильны, но ваши речи ничего не доказали.
Do ye imagine to reprove words, and the speeches of one that is desperate, which are as wind?
Стремитесь обличить меня? От многословья вашего — усталость.
Yea, ye overwhelm the fatherless, and ye dig a pit for your friend.
Вы стали бы наверняка играть, чтоб выиграть принадлежащее сиротам, продать готовы собственного друга.
Now therefore be content, look upon me; for it is evident unto you if I lie.
Теперь, прошу, взгляните мне в глаза, я лгать ни в чём бы вам не стал.
Return, I pray you, let it not be iniquity; yea, return again, my righteousness is in it.
Решения свои перемените, несправедливыми не будьте. Плохого ничего не сделал я.
