King James Bible

New Living Translation

  • Psalm of the Cross

{To the chief Musician upon Aijeleth Shahar, A Psalm of David.} My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?
  • For the choir director: A psalm of David, to be sung to the tune “Doe of the Dawn.”

My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?
Why are you so far away when I groan for help?
  • O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent.
  • Every day I call to you, my God, but you do not answer.
Every night I lift my voice, but I find no relief.
  • But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.
  • Yet you are holy,
enthroned on the praises of Israel.
  • Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them.
  • Our ancestors trusted in you,
    and you rescued them.
  • They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded.
  • They cried out to you and were saved.
They trusted in you and were never disgraced.
  • But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.
  • But I am a worm and not a man.
I am scorned and despised by all!
  • All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,
  • Everyone who sees me mocks me.
They sneer and shake their heads, saying,
  • He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.
  • “Is this the one who relies on the LORD?
Then let the LORD save him!
If the LORD loves him so much,
    let the LORD rescue him!”
  • But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother's breasts.
  • Yet you brought me safely from my mother’s womb
and led me to trust you at my mother’s breast.
  • I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother's belly.
  • I was thrust into your arms at my birth.
You have been my God from the moment I was born.
  • Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help.
  • Do not stay so far from me,
    for trouble is near,
and no one else can help me.
  • Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round.
  • My enemies surround me like a herd of bulls;
fierce bulls of Bashan have hemmed me in!
  • They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion.
  • Like lions they open their jaws against me,
roaring and tearing into their prey.
  • I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.
  • My life is poured out like water,
and all my bones are out of joint.
    My heart is like wax,
    melting within me.
  • My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death.
  • My strength has dried up like sunbaked clay.
My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth.
You have laid me in the dust and left me for dead.
  • For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.
  • My enemies surround me like a pack of dogs;
an evil gang closes in on me.
They have pierceda my hands and feet.
  • I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me.
  • I can count all my bones.
My enemies stare at me and gloat.
  • They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.
  • They divide my garments among themselves
and throw diceb for my clothing.
  • But be not thou far from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste thee to help me.
  • O LORD, do not stay far away!
You are my strength; come quickly to my aid!
  • Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog.
  • Save me from the sword;
spare my precious life from these dogs.
  • Save me from the lion's mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns.
  • Snatch me from the lion’s jaws
and from the horns of these wild oxen.
  • I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee.
  • I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters.c
I will praise you among your assembled people.
  • Ye that fear the LORD, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel.
  • Praise the LORD, all you who fear him!
Honor him, all you descendants of Jacob!
Show him reverence, all you descendants of Israel!
  • For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard.
  • For he has not ignored or belittled the suffering of the needy.
He has not turned his back on them,
but has listened to their cries for help.
  • My praise shall be of thee in the great congregation: I will pay my vows before them that fear him.
  • I will praise you in the great assembly.
I will fulfill my vows in the presence of those who worship you.
  • The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever.
  • The poor will eat and be satisfied.
All who seek the LORD will praise him.
Their hearts will rejoice with everlasting joy.
  • All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee.
  • The whole earth will acknowledge the LORD and return to him.
All the families of the nations will bow down before him.
  • For the kingdom is the LORD'S: and he is the governor among the nations.
  • For royal power belongs to the LORD.
    He rules all the nations.
  • All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul.
  • Let the rich of the earth feast and worship.
Bow before him, all who are mortal,
all whose lives will end as dust.
  • A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation.
  • Our children will also serve him.
Future generations will hear about the wonders of the Lord.
  • They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this.
  • His righteous acts will be told to those not yet born.
They will hear about everything he has done.
