Маскіл. Асафа. Слухай, народе мій, мого навчання! Прихиліть ухо ваше до слів уст моїх!
I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:
Уста мої для приповісток я відкрию, загадки оповім з віків днедавніх.
Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.
Те, що ми чули і що знаєм, і батьки наші нам оповідали,
We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.
не затаїмо ми перед їхніми синами, звіщаючи родові, що прийде, хвалу Господню та його потугу, і чудеса, які він чинив.
For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:
Бо він установив у Якові свідоцтво, і клав закон в Ізраїлі, щоб те, що заповідав батькам нашим, вони синам своїм переказали;
That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:
щоб відав рід, який прийде, діти, які народяться, щоб устали й розповіли своїм дітям.
That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:
Щоб на Бога вони покладали свою надію, не забували діл Божих і заповіді його пильнували;
And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God.
не були, як батьки їхні, — поріддя бунтівниче, непокірне, поріддя із серцем змінливим, якого дух був Богові невірний.
The children of Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle.
Сини Ефраїма, що напинають лука й стріляють, повернулися назад у день бою.
They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law;
Союзу Божого вони не пильнували, в його законі відмовились ходити;
And forgat his works, and his wonders that he had shewed them.
діла його й чудеса його забули, що він був явив їм.
Marvellous things did he in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.
Дивні діла зробив він перед їхніми батьками в землі Єгипетській, на полі Цоан.
He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; and he made the waters to stand as an heap.
Він розтяв море й перевів їх; і води валом поставив.
In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire.
Удень їх хмарою він провадив, а цілу ніч вогненним світлом.
He clave the rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as out of the great depths.
Розсік у пустині скелі, і напоїв їх щедро, мов з безодень.
He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers.
Він вивів із скелі потоки, і ріками пустив води.
And they sinned yet more against him by provoking the most High in the wilderness.
Та вони знову грішили проти нього, збунтувалися проти Всевишнього в пустині.
And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust.
І спокушали Бога в своїм серці, просивши собі до смаку їжі.
Yea, they spake against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?
І проти Бога говорили й промовляли: «Чи може приготувати Бог стіл у пустині?
Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people?
Ось він ударив у скелю, і хлинули води, і полились потоки. Чи може дати й хліба або зготувати народові своєму м'яса?»
Therefore the LORD heard this, and was wroth: so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also came up against Israel;
Тому, почувши те Господь, розгнівавсь і запалав огонь проти Якова, і гнів проти Ізраїля піднявся.
Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation:
Бо вони не вірили в Бога, не покладалися на його спасіння.
Though he had commanded the clouds from above, and opened the doors of heaven,
І він велів угорі хмарам і відчинив небесні двері,
And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven.
і зіслав, мов дощ, манну їм на поживу, і хліба подав їм з неба.
Man did eat angels' food: he sent them meat to the full.
Хлібом могутніх чоловік живився, харчів послав їм до наситу.
He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven: and by his power he brought in the south wind.
І підняв східній вітер у небі, і силою своєю прогнав вітер з півдня.
He rained flesh also upon them as dust, and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea:
Пустив на них дощем, як порох, м'яса, і мов пісок морський, птаство пернате.
And he let it fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations.
І падало воно посеред їхнього табору, навколо їхніх наметів.
So they did eat, and were well filled: for he gave them their own desire;
їли вони й наситилися вельми, і вдовольнив він їхнє бажання.
They were not estranged from their lust. But while their meat was yet in their mouths,
Та ще не одвернулися від своїх забаганок, ще страва була в них у роті,
The wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them, and smote down the chosen men of Israel.
як проти них знявся гнів Божий, і він вигубив їхніх чільних, і повалив Ізраїля юнацтво.
For all this they sinned still, and believed not for his wondrous works.
Але вони таки грішили далі, не вірили в його чудесні дії.
Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, and their years in trouble.
Тому він звів їхні дні нінащо, немов подув, літа їхні у погибелі раптовій.
When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned and inquired early after God.
Коли він бив їх, вони його шукали, і, навернувшись, розшукували Бога ревно.
And they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer.
І згадували, що Бог — їхня скеля, що Бог Всевишній — їхній Відкупитель.
Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues.
Але вони його обманювали своїми устами, своїм язиком вони йому брехали.
For their heart was not right with him, neither were they stedfast in his covenant.
Їхнє серце перед ним не було щире, ані його союзові вони не були вірні.
But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath.
Та він, завжди повний милосердя, дарував провину, не понищив, ба часто відвертав він гнів свій і не вергав усього свого обурення.
For he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again.
Згадав він, що вони — лиш тіло, вітер, що дме й не повертається вже більше.
How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert!
Скільки разів бунтувались проти нього в пустині, в пустелі йому прикрощі коїли!
Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel.
Потім знов спокутували Бога, і Святому Ізраїля смутку завдавали.
They remembered not his hand, nor the day when he delivered them from the enemy.
Руки його вони не спогадали, ні того дня, як від гнобителя він їх визволив,
How he had wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Zoan:
як появив знаки свої в Єгипті і чудеса свої на полі Цоан.
And had turned their rivers into blood; and their floods, that they could not drink.
Перетворив він у кров їхні ріки і їхні потоки, щоб їм не дати пити.
He sent divers sorts of flies among them, which devoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them.
Він напустив на них пеських мух, що їли їх, і жаб, що їх пожирали.
He gave also their increase unto the caterpiller, and their labour unto the locust.
Віддав гусені врожай їхній, і сарані їхню працю.
He destroyed their vines with hail, and their sycomore trees with frost.
Їхні виноградники він побив градом, смоковниці їхні — памороззю.
He gave up their cattle also to the hail, and their flocks to hot thunderbolts.
Віддав градові їхню скотину, їхні отари — блискавицям.
He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending evil angels among them.
Послав на них жар свого гніву, — обурення, погрозу й напасті, юрбу посланців нещастя.
He made a way to his anger; he spared not their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence;
Він простелив дорогу гнівові своєму; від смерти не зберіг їхнє життя і пошесті віддав життя їхнє.
And smote all the firstborn in Egypt; the chief of their strength in the tabernacles of Ham:
Побив усіх перворіднів у Єгипті, первістків, цвіт сили, у наметах Хана.
But made his own people to go forth like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.
І вивів свій народ, як овець, і вів їх, як отару, пустинею.
And he led them on safely, so that they feared not: but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.
Провадив їх безпечно, і вони не боялись, а ворогів їхніх покрило море.
And he brought them to the border of his sanctuary, even to this mountain, which his right hand had purchased.
Привів їх до землі своєї святої, до гір, що здобула його правиця.
He cast out the heathen also before them, and divided them an inheritance by line, and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.
Прогнав народи перед ними, і жеребком розпаював їм у спадщину, і оселив коліна Ізраїля в їхніх наметах.
Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies:
Але вони спокушали й гнівили Бога Всевишнього і свідоцтв його не пильнували.
But turned back, and dealt unfaithfully like their fathers: they were turned aside like a deceitful bow.
І відступили й зрадили, як і батьки їхні; і відвернулися, неначе лук зрадливий.
For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their graven images.
Розсердили його узвишшями своїми, і своїми бовванами ревнощі його збудили.
When God heard this, he was wroth, and greatly abhorred Israel:
Почув те Бог і розгнівався, і геть Ізраїля відкинув.
So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent which he placed among men;
Покинув у Шіло житло, намет, де між людьми був оселився.
And delivered his strength into captivity, and his glory into the enemy's hand.
Він видав у неволю свою силу, і славу свою — у ворожі руки.
He gave his people over also unto the sword; and was wroth with his inheritance.
Під меч видав народ свій, обурився на свою спадщину.
The fire consumed their young men; and their maidens were not given to marriage.
Вогонь пожер їхніх хлопців, дівчатам їхнім не співано весільних.
Their priests fell by the sword; and their widows made no lamentation.
Священики їхні під мечем упали, — і не плакали вдовиці.
Then the Lord awaked as one out of sleep, and like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine.
Тоді Господь мов зо сну пробудився неначе витязь, вином одолілий.
And he smote his enemies in the hinder parts: he put them to a perpetual reproach.
І ворогів своїх відбив назад, завдав їм вічного сорому.
Moreover he refused the tabernacle of Joseph, and chose not the tribe of Ephraim:
І погордував Йосифа наметом, коліна Ефраїмового більш не вибрав.
But chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved.
Але Юди коліно вибрав, гору Сіон, котру собі вподобав.
And he built his sanctuary like high palaces, like the earth which he hath established for ever.
І збудував, мов небо свою святиню — як землю, що заснував її повіки.
He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds:
І вибрав Давида, слугу свого, і взяв його від кошар овечих.
From following the ewes great with young he brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance.
Від дійних овець його покликав пасти Якова, народ свій, та Ізраїля — свою спадщину.
