And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.
і простягай свою руку, розуміючи, що це і тобі потрібно буде приготувати.
Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.
Якщо ж ти — ненаситний, не жадай його страв, бо в них — омана життя.
Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.
Якщо ти бідний, то з багатієм себе не порівнюй, — від своїх задумів відмовся.
Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.
Звернеш на нього своє око — та він зник, бо в нього приготовлені крила, наче орлині, і він повертається в дім свого господаря.
Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:
Не їж із заздрісною людиною, — його страв не бажай.
For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.
Наче хтось ковтає волосину — таким чином він їсть і п’є.
The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.
Не запрошуй його до себе, не їж з ним свого хліба, бо він його виблює і зганьбить твої щирі слова.
Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.
Нічого не донось до вух нерозумного, щоб він часом не насміявся з твоїх розумних слів.
Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:
Не пересувай віковічні межі й на власність сиріт не заходь!
For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee.
Адже Господь — їхній могутній викупитель, — Він розсудить справу, яку вони мають з тобою.
Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.
Зверни своє серце до повчання, а свої вуха налаштуй на слова знання.
Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.
Не відмовляйся повчати дитину, адже коли і покараєш її різкою, — не помре.
Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.
Ти покараєш її різкою, але визволиш її душу від смерті.
My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.
Сину, якщо твоє серце стане мудрим, то ти принесеш радість і моєму серцю;
Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.
і твої уста промовлятимуть слова до моїх уст, якщо будуть правдиві.
Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.
Хай твоє серце не заздрить грішникам, але весь день перебувай у Господньому страху.
For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off.
І якщо дотримуватимешся цього, то будуть у тебе нащадки, і надія твоя не пропаде.
Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.
Сину, слухай, будь мудрим, прямо скеруй думки свого серця.
Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:
Не будь п’яницею, не затримуйся на зустрічах і закупівлі м’яса.
For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.
Адже кожний п’яниця і розпусник потрапить у злидні, і будуть одягатися в подерте та в лахміття всі ті, хто любить поспати.
Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.
Сину, слухай батька, який породив тебе, і не зневажай матері своєї, через те, що вона зістарілася.
Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.
Праведний батько добре виховує, і за мудрого сина радіє його душа.
Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice.
Хай радіють тобою батько і мати, — нехай веселиться та, яка народила тебе.
My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.
Сину, дай мені твоє серце, — хай твої очі пильнують мої дороги.
For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit.
Адже чужий дім — немов дірявий посуд, а чужа криниця — вузька.
She also lieth in wait as for a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men.
Такий швидко загине, — кожний беззаконник буде знищений.
Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?
У кого горе? У кого безлад? У кого спір? Де неприємності та перемови? У кого рани без підстави? У кого мутні очі?
They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.
Хіба не в тих, хто засиджується за вином? Чи не в тих, які вивідують, де бувають випивки?
Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.
Не впивайтеся вином, але спілкуйтеся з праведними людьми, розмовляйте з ними на прогулянках. Бо коли на пляшки та келихи спрямовуватимеш свої очі, то пізніше ходитимеш більш нагим, ніж булава.
At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.
Врешті-решт такий простягнеться, як укушений гадюкою, — наче отрута рогатого змія розходиться по ньому.
Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.
Як тільки твої очі побачать чужу жінку, твої уста заговорять лукаво.
Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.
І лежатимеш ти, немов посеред моря, наче стерновий серед розбурханих хвиль.
