Remember Your Creator in Your Youth

Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;

Помни своего Создателя в дни юности своей,
пока не настали тяжелые дни
и не приблизились годы, о которых ты скажешь:
«Я не нахожу в них удовольствия!»

While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain:

Пока не перестали сиять солнце, и свет,
и луна, и звезды
и не вернулись тучи после дождя.

In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened,

Придет день, когда задрожат стерегущие дом,
и сильные мужчины согнутся,
и мелющие женщины перестанут молоть,
потому что осталось их немного,
и помрачатся смотрящие в окно19;

And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low;

когда будут запираться двери на улицу
и затихнет звук жернова;
когда человек будет просыпаться даже от щебета птиц,
и умолкнут все песни20;

Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:

когда люди будут бояться высоты
и опасностей на улице;
когда расцветет миндаль,
и отяжелеет кузнечик,
и осыплется каперс.21
Ведь человек отправляется в свой вечный дом,
и плакальщицы проходят по улицам.

Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.

Поэтому помни Его , пока не порвалась серебряная цепочка
и не раскололась золотая чаша,
пока не разбился кувшин у источника
и не обрушилось колесо над колодцем.22

Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

И тогда тело вернется в землю, откуда оно и было взято,
а дух вернется к Богу, Который дал его.23

Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity.

«Суета сует! — сказал Екклесиаст. —
Все суета!»

The Fear of God is Utmost

And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs.

Екклесиаст не только был мудрым, но и передавал знания народу. Он обдумал, исследовал и записал много мудрых изречений.

The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth.

Екклесиаст старался подбирать красивые выражения и верно записал слова истины.

The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd.

Слова мудрецов подобны стрекалу, которым пастухи подгоняют скот, и собранные пословицы закрепляются в сознании, словно прочно вбитые гвозди. Они даны одним пастухом.24

And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh.

Берегись, сын мой, того, что сверх этого: книги можно составлять без конца, и усиленное изучение утомляет тело.

Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

Теперь, когда все было услышано,
вот заключение:
бойся Бога и соблюдай Его повеления,
ведь это все, что важно для человека,25

For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

потому что Бог приведет каждое дело на суд,
включая и то, что сокрыто,
будь оно хорошим или плохим.
