The Futility of Life
There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among men:

Є зло, яке я побачив під сонцем, і воно велике на людині.
A man to whom God hath given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.
Чоловік, якому Бог дасть багатство, маєтки і славу, і в його душі немає браку ні в чому, що забажає, та Бог не дасть йому владу із цього їсти, бо чужий чоловік його їсть. Це марнота і тяжка.
If a man beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.
Якщо чоловік народить сто дітей і поживе багато років, і дуже численні будуть дні його років, і його душа не насититься добром, і не було для нього гробниці, я сказав: Недоношеному краще за нього,
For he cometh in with vanity, and departeth in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness.
бо він прийшов у марноті й відходить у темряві, і його ім’я покриється темрявою,
Moreover he hath not seen the sun, nor known any thing: this hath more rest than the other.
і він сонця не побачив і не пізнав, у нього спокій більший, аніж у того.
Yea, though he live a thousand years twice told, yet hath he seen no good: do not all go to one place?
І якщо він пожив до повороту тисячі років, і не знав праведності, то хіба не все йде до одного місця?
All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.
Усякий труд людини — для її уст, і душа не насититься.
For what hath the wise more than the fool? what hath the poor, that knoweth to walk before the living?
Адже яка користь мудрому над нерозумним? Бо бідний пізнав, як ходити перед життям.
Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire: this is also vanity and vexation of spirit.
Зір очей кращий, ніж у того, що ходить душею. І це — марнота і бажання духа.
That which hath been is named already, and it is known that it is man: neither may he contend with him that is mightier than he.
Якщо щось сталося, вже дано йому ім’я, і знано, хто є чоловік, і не зможе судитися із сильнішим від нього.
Seeing there be many things that increase vanity, what is man the better?
Адже є численні слова, що множать марноту. Що корисне для людини?
For who knoweth what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?
Бо хто знає, що добре для людини в житті: число днів життя його марноти? І він провів їх у тіні. Бо хто сповістить людині, що після нього буде під сонцем?
