Obey the King

Who is as the wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? a man's wisdom maketh his face to shine, and the boldness of his face shall be changed.

Хто рівен премудрому — а все ж таки хто розуміє значіннє річей? — Мудрість у чоловіка розяснює лице його й перемінює насуплений вид його.

I counsel thee to keep the king's commandment, and that in regard of the oath of God.

Я кажу: Чини волю царську, а се — задля присяги перед Богом.

3

Be not hasty to go out of his sight: stand not in an evil thing; for he doeth whatsoever pleaseth him.

Не квап оддалятись од його; не будь упрямим в ледачому дїлї; бо він, що схоче, все може зробити.

4

Where the word of a king is, there is power: and who may say unto him, What doest thou?

Слово царське потужне; хто зважиться сказати йому: Що ти робиш?

5

Whoso keepeth the commandment shall feel no evil thing: and a wise man's heart discerneth both time and judgment.

Хто певнить накази, той не дознає лиха; серце в мудрого знає й час і спосіб;

6

Because to every purpose there is time and judgment, therefore the misery of man is great upon him.

Про всяку бо річ є час і спосіб, тільки чоловікові лихо з тим,

For he knoweth not that which shall be: for who can tell him when it shall be?

Що він не знає, що станеться, а хто ж скаже йому, як воно станеться?

8

There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.

Нїхто не властен над духом, щоб здержати дух, і нема в його сили проти дня смертї, нема й пільги в службі віськовій, і провина не вирятує винуватого.

All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: there is a time wherein one man ruleth over another to his own hurt.

Все це я вбачав, звертаючи ввагу на те, що дїється під сонцем. Буває часом, що один чоловік панує над другим чоловіком на шкоду йому.

Fear God

And so I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of the holy, and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done: this is also vanity.

Так бачив я, що ховали чесно безбожників, приходили й відходили з сьвятого місця, й забувано їх у містї, де вони так поводились. Та й се марнота.

Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.

Суд над лихими вчинками не хутко судиться; через те й не лякаєсь серце людське, чинити зло.

12

Though a sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before him:

Та хоч грішник сто раз коїть лихе й тріває в йому, то я знаю, що тільки богобоязливим буде добре, хто почуває почесть перед лицем його;

13

But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he feareth not before God.

13

А безбожному не буде щастя й, немов би тїнь, не довго пробуде такий, хто не боїться Бога.

14

God's Ways are Mysterious

There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity.

Ще ж, буває й ось така марнота на землї: Праведних постигає те, що заслуговали б учинки безбожних, а з безбожними дїється таке, що заслуговали б учинки праведних. І сказав я: та й се — марнота!

15

Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun.

От і вхвалив я веселощі; бо нема нїчого лучшого чоловікові під сонцем, як їсти, пити й веселим серцем уживати; се ж супроводить його в працї в днях життя його, що дав йому Бог під сонцем.

16

When I applied mine heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth: (for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes:)

Як звернув я серце моє на те, щоб зрозуміти мудрість і розгледїти все, що дїється на землї, де то чоловік нї в день нї в ночі не має сну, —

17

Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea further; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.

Тодї спізнав я по всїх дїлах Божих, що людина не второпає того, що дїється під сонцем. Скільки б нї силкувався чоловік дослїдити, він все таки не здолїє виглибити того; і коли б який мудрець сказав, що він знає, то таки він не може того дослїдити.
