Look not upon me, because I am black, because the sun hath looked upon me: my mother's children were angry with me; they made me the keeper of the vineyards; but mine own vineyard have I not kept.

My mother’s sons were angry with me
and made me take care of the vineyards;
my own vineyard I had to neglect. -

Скажи мне, возлюбленный, где пасешь ты стадо свое
и где покоишь ты овец своих в полдень?
Зачем мне искать тебя, бродя, как блудница,1
среди стад твоих друзей? -
Не дивіться на мене, що я — смаглява, бо сонце до мене поставилося з погордою. Сини моєї матері сперечалися зі мною, вони мене поставили сторожкою у виноградниках, а свого виноградника я не оберегла.
