Judah's Sin and Punishment
At that time, saith the LORD, they shall bring out the bones of the kings of Judah, and the bones of his princes, and the bones of the priests, and the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, out of their graves:

Того ча́су, — говорить Господь, — повитя́гують кості царів Юди та кості його князі́в, і кості священиків, і кості пророків, і кості ме́шканців Єрусалиму з їхніх гробі́в,
And they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshipped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried; they shall be for dung upon the face of the earth.
і порозкладають їх перед сонцем і перед місяцем, та перед усіма́ небесними світилами, яки́х вони кохали та служили їм, і що йшли за ними, і що зверта́лися до них, і що вклоня́лися їм. Не будуть вони зі́брані й не будуть похо́вані, — гноєм стануть вони на поверхні землі!
And death shall be chosen rather than life by all the residue of them that remain of this evil family, which remain in all the places whither I have driven them, saith the LORD of hosts.
І смерть буде ліпша від життя для всієї решти позоста́лих зо злого цього роду, по всіх цих місцях позосталих, куди Я їх повиганя́в, говорить Господь Саваот.
Moreover thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD; Shall they fall, and not arise? shall he turn away, and not return?
І скажеш до них: Так говорить Госпо́дь: Хіба па́дають — і не встаю́ть? Хіба хто відсту́пить, то вже не верта́ється?
Why then is this people of Jerusalem slidden back by a perpetual backsliding? they hold fast deceit, they refuse to return.
Чому́ відступив оцей єрусалимський наро́д усевічним відсту́пленням? Міцно схопи́лись вони за ома́ну, не хо́чуть наверну́тись.
I hearkened and heard, but they spake not aright: no man repented him of his wickedness, saying, What have I done? every one turned to his course, as the horse rusheth into the battle.
Прислуха́вся Я й слухав: неправду говорять, немає ніко́го, хто б каявсь у своє́му лука́встві, говорячи: Що́ я зробив? Кожен з них оберта́ється до свого бігу, мов той кінь, що жене́ться у бій.
Yea, the stork in the heaven knoweth her appointed times; and the turtle and the crane and the swallow observe the time of their coming; but my people know not the judgment of the LORD.
І ві́дає бу́сел у повітрі умо́влений час свій, а го́рлиця й ла́стівка та жураве́ль стережуть час приле́ту свого, — а наро́д Мій не знає Господнього права!
How do ye say, We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us? Lo, certainly in vain made he it; the pen of the scribes is in vain.
Як ви скажете: Ми мудреці, і з нами Господній Зако́н? Ось справді брехне́ю вчинило його брехли́ве писа́рське писа́льне!
The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken: lo, they have rejected the word of the LORD; and what wisdom is in them?
Засоро́млені ці мудреці, збенте́жилися й були схо́плені. Ось вони слово Господнє відки́нули, — що ж за мудрість ще мають вони?
Therefore will I give their wives unto others, and their fields to them that shall inherit them: for every one from the least even unto the greatest is given to covetousness, from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely.
Тому їхніх жіно́к віддам іншим, а їхні поля́ — здобувця́м, бо вони від мало́го та аж до великого — усі віддали́сь користолю́бству, від пророка та аж до священика чинять неправду!
For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.
І леге́нько ліку́ють нещастя наро́ду Мого, говорячи: „Мир, мир“, — а миру нема!
Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore shall they fall among them that fall: in the time of their visitation they shall be cast down, saith the LORD.
Чи вони засоро́милися, що гидо́ту робили? Ні тро́хи вони не засоро́милися, і застида́тись не вміють, — тому́ то впаду́ть між упа́лими в ча́сі наві́щення їх, спіткну́ться, говорить Госпо́дь.
I will surely consume them, saith the LORD: there shall be no grapes on the vine, nor figs on the fig tree, and the leaf shall fade; and the things that I have given them shall pass away from them.
Зберу їх доще́нту, говорить Господь: не буде ягі́д у них на винограді, і не буде на фі́ґовім дереві фіґ, а їхнє листя пов'я́не, і пошлю́ їм таких, що їх поїдя́ть.
Why do we sit still? assemble yourselves, and let us enter into the defenced cities, and let us be silent there: for the LORD our God hath put us to silence, and given us water of gall to drink, because we have sinned against the LORD.
„Пощо ми сидимо́? Збирайтесь та пі́демо в тверди́нні міста та й поги́немо там, бо Господь, Бог наш, учинив, що ми зги́немо, і напоїв нас водою трійли́вою, бо ми Господе́ві згрішили“.
We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of health, and behold trouble!
Ми миру чекали, — й немає добра́, часу ви́лікування — й ось жах!
The snorting of his horses was heard from Dan: the whole land trembled at the sound of the neighing of his strong ones; for they are come, and have devoured the land, and all that is in it; the city, and those that dwell therein.
Чути фи́ркання ко́ней його аж від Дану, від гуку іржа́ння його жеребці́в уся земля затремтіла! І при́йдуть вони, й пожеру́ть усю землю та по́вню її, місто й тих, хто заме́шкує в ньому.
For, behold, I will send serpents, cockatrices, among you, which will not be charmed, and they shall bite you, saith the LORD.
Бо ось Я пошлю́ проти вас тих вужі́в та гадю́к, що немає закля́ття на них, і вони вас куса́тимуть, каже Господь!
Jeremiah Weeps for his People
When I would comfort myself against sorrow, my heart is faint in me.

Яка моя втіха у сму́тку? Болить мені серце моє.
Behold the voice of the cry of the daughter of my people because of them that dwell in a far country: Is not the LORD in Zion? is not her king in her? Why have they provoked me to anger with their graven images, and with strange vanities?
Ось голосіння дочки́ Мого наро́ду з далекого кра́ю: „Чи Господь не в Сіоні? Чи не в нім його Цар?“ Нащо Мене розгніви́ли своїми бовва́нами, тими чужими марно́тами?
The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.
„Минули жнива́, покінчи́лося літо, а ми не спасе́ні“.
For the hurt of the daughter of my people am I hurt; I am black; astonishment hath taken hold on me.
Через нещастя дочки́ народу мого́ знещасли́влений я, і міцно страхіття мене обняло.́
