King James Bible

New Living Translation

  • Prophecy against the King of Tyre

The word of the LORD came again unto me, saying,
  • A Message for Tyre’s King

Then this message came to me from the LORD:
  • Son of man, say unto the prince of Tyrus, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thine heart is lifted up, and thou hast said, I am a God, I sit in the seat of God, in the midst of the seas; yet thou art a man, and not God, though thou set thine heart as the heart of God:
  • “Son of man, give the prince of Tyre this message from the Sovereign LORD:
“In your great pride you claim, ‘I am a god!
I sit on a divine throne in the heart of the sea.’
But you are only a man and not a god,
though you boast that you are a god.
  • Behold, thou art wiser than Daniel; there is no secret that they can hide from thee:
  • You regard yourself as wiser than Daniel
and think no secret is hidden from you.
  • With thy wisdom and with thine understanding thou hast gotten thee riches, and hast gotten gold and silver into thy treasures:
  • With your wisdom and understanding you have amassed great wealth —
gold and silver for your treasuries.
  • By thy great wisdom and by thy traffick hast thou increased thy riches, and thine heart is lifted up because of thy riches:
  • Yes, your wisdom has made you very rich,
and your riches have made you very proud.
  • Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast set thine heart as the heart of God;
  • “Therefore, this is what the Sovereign LORD says:
Because you think you are as wise as a god,
  • Behold, therefore I will bring strangers upon thee, the terrible of the nations: and they shall draw their swords against the beauty of thy wisdom, and they shall defile thy brightness.
  • I will now bring against you a foreign army,
    the terror of the nations.
They will draw their swords against your marvelous wisdom
    and defile your splendor!
  • They shall bring thee down to the pit, and thou shalt die the deaths of them that are slain in the midst of the seas.
  • They will bring you down to the pit,
and you will die in the heart of the sea,
    pierced with many wounds.
  • Wilt thou yet say before him that slayeth thee, I am God? but thou shalt be a man, and no God, in the hand of him that slayeth thee.
  • Will you then boast, ‘I am a god!’
    to those who kill you?
To them you will be no god
    but merely a man!
  • Thou shalt die the deaths of the uncircumcised by the hand of strangers: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD.
  • You will die like an outcasta
    at the hands of foreigners.
I, the Sovereign LORD, have spoken!”
  • A Lament over the King of Tyre

Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
  • Then this further message came to me from the LORD:
  • Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.
  • “Son of man, sing this funeral song for the king of Tyre. Give him this message from the Sovereign LORD:
“You were the model of perfection,
full of wisdom and exquisite in beauty.
  • Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.
  • You were in Eden,
    the garden of God.
Your clothing was adorned with every precious stoneb
red carnelian, pale-green peridot, white moonstone,
    blue-green beryl, onyx, green jasper,
blue lapis lazuli, turquoise, and emerald —
    all beautifully crafted for you
and set in the finest gold.
    They were given to you
on the day you were created.
  • Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.
  • I ordained and anointed you
    as the mighty angelic guardian.c
You had access to the holy mountain of God
and walked among the stones of fire.
  • Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.
  • “You were blameless in all you did
from the day you were created
until the day evil was found in you.
  • By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.
  • Your rich commerce led you to violence,
    and you sinned.
So I banished you in disgrace
    from the mountain of God.
I expelled you, O mighty guardian,
from your place among the stones of fire.
  • Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.
  • Your heart was filled with pride
    because of all your beauty.
    Your wisdom was corrupted
    by your love of splendor.
So I threw you to the ground
and exposed you to the curious gaze of kings.
  • Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee.
  • You defiled your sanctuaries
with your many sins and your dishonest trade.
So I brought fire out from within you,
    and it consumed you.
I reduced you to ashes on the ground
in the sight of all who were watching.
  • All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more.
  • All who knew you are appalled at your fate.
You have come to a terrible end,
and you will exist no more.”
  • A Prophecy against Sidon

Again the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

  • A Message for Sidon

Then another message came to me from the LORD:
  • Son of man, set thy face against Zidon, and prophesy against it,
  • “Son of man, turn and face the city of Sidon and prophesy against it.
  • And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Zidon; and I will be glorified in the midst of thee: and they shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall have executed judgments in her, and shall be sanctified in her.
  • Give the people of Sidon this message from the Sovereign LORD:
“I am your enemy, O Sidon,
and I will reveal my glory by what I do to you.
When I bring judgment against you
and reveal my holiness among you,
    everyone watching will know
    that I am the LORD.
  • For I will send into her pestilence, and blood into her streets; and the wounded shall be judged in the midst of her by the sword upon her on every side; and they shall know that I am the LORD.
  • I will send a plague against you,
and blood will be spilled in your streets.
The attack will come from every direction,
and your people will lie slaughtered within your walls.
    Then everyone will know
    that I am the LORD.
  • And there shall be no more a pricking brier unto the house of Israel, nor any grieving thorn of all that are round about them, that despised them; and they shall know that I am the Lord GOD.
  • No longer will Israel’s scornful neighbors
prick and tear at her like briers and thorns.
    For then they will know
that I am the Sovereign LORD.
  • The Restoration of Israel

Thus saith the Lord GOD; When I shall have gathered the house of Israel from the people among whom they are scattered, and shall be sanctified in them in the sight of the heathen, then shall they dwell in their land that I have given to my servant Jacob.

  • Restoration for Israel

“This is what the Sovereign LORD says: The people of Israel will again live in their own land, the land I gave my servant Jacob. For I will gather them from the distant lands where I have scattered them. I will reveal to the nations of the world my holiness among my people.
  • And they shall dwell safely therein, and shall build houses, and plant vineyards; yea, they shall dwell with confidence, when I have executed judgments upon all those that despise them round about them; and they shall know that I am the LORD their God.
  • They will live safely in Israel and build homes and plant vineyards. And when I punish the neighboring nations that treated them with contempt, they will know that I am the LORD their God.”
