Belshazzar's Impious Feast

Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand.

Царь Валтасар устроил большое пиршество для тысячи своих вельмож и пил с ними вино.

Belshazzar, whiles he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might drink therein.

В то время, когда царь Валтасар пил вино, он приказал своим слугам принести золотые и серебряные чаши. Это были чаши, которые его дед Навуходоносор вынес из храма в Иерусалиме. Царь Валтасар хотел, чтобы его вельможи, жёны и наложницы пили из них.

Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, drank in them.

Тогда принесли золотые сосуды, которые взяты были из храма Божия в Иерусалиме; и пили из них царь и вельможи его, и жёны его, и наложницы.

They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.

Они пили вино и славили своих богов-идолов. Они восхваляли этих богов, а боги эти были лишь статуями, сделанными из золота, серебра, бронзы, железа, дерева и камня.

The Handwriting on the Wall

In the same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaister of the wall of the king's palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.

И вдруг появилась человеческая рука и стала писать на стене. Пальцы этой руки начертали слова на известковой стене. Рука писала на стене в царском доме около светильника, и царь наблюдал, как писала эта рука.

Then the king's countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another.

Царь Валтасар был очень напуган. Лицо его побелело от страха, колени задрожали, и он не мог встать, ибо ноги его ослабели.

The king cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. And the king spake, and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whosoever shall read this writing, and shew me the interpretation thereof, shall be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.

Царь позвал к себе чародеев, халдеев и предсказателей и сказал им: "Я дам награду тому, кто сможет прочесть эти письмена и объяснить, что они значат. Я дам багряницу этому человеку и надену ему на шею золотую цепь. Я сделаю его третьим властелином в царстве".

Then came in all the king's wise men: but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation thereof.

И пришли все царские мудрецы, но они не смогли прочесть написанное и понять, что оно означает.

Then was king Belshazzar greatly troubled, and his countenance was changed in him, and his lords were astonied.

Вельможи царя Валтасара были смущены. Страх царя рос, он изменился в лице и становился всё более озабоченным.

Now the queen, by reason of the words of the king and his lords, came into the banquet house: and the queen spake and said, O king, live for ever: let not thy thoughts trouble thee, nor let thy countenance be changed:

Услышав голоса царя и его приближённых, на пир пришла мать царя. Она сказала: "О царь, живи вовеки! Не бойся! Не бледней от страха!

There is a man in thy kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, was found in him; whom the king Nebuchadnezzar thy father, the king, I say, thy father, made master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers;

В твоём царстве есть человек, в котором дух святых богов. В дни царствования твоего отца этот человек показал, что умеет разгадывать тайны. Он показал свой разум и мудрость, и доказал, что они подобны мудрости богов. Твой дед, царь Навуходоносор, поставил этого человека главою мудрецов. Он возглавлял всех мудрецов и халдеев.

Forasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and shewing of hard sentences, and dissolving of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar: now let Daniel be called, and he will shew the interpretation.

Имя этого человека — Даниил, но царь переименовал его в Валтасара. Он очень умён и очень много знает. Он умел толковать сны, объяснять тайны и разрешать очень трудные задачи. Позови Даниила, и он расскажет тебе, что означают письмена на стене".

Daniel Interprets the Handwriting

Then was Daniel brought in before the king. And the king spake and said unto Daniel, Art thou that Daniel, which art of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Jewry?

Когда Даниила привели к царю, царь сказал ему: "Твоё имя Даниил? Ты один из пленных, которых царь привёл из Иудеи?

I have even heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in thee, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom is found in thee.

Я слышал, что в тебе дух богов, что ты очень умён и понимаешь тайны.

15

And now the wise men, the astrologers, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known unto me the interpretation thereof: but they could not shew the interpretation of the thing:

Ко мне приводили мудрецов и чародеев прочитать письмена на стене. Я хотел, чтобы они объяснили мне, что означают эти письмена, но они не могли объяснить мне этого.

16

And I have heard of thee, that thou canst make interpretations, and dissolve doubts: now if thou canst read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation thereof, thou shalt be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about thy neck, and shalt be the third ruler in the kingdom.

Я слышал о тебе и о том, что ты умеешь объяснить всё и можешь разгадать самые трудные загадки. Если ты сможешь прочитать эти письмена на стене, и объяснить мне их значение, я дам тебе багряницу и надену золотую цепь тебе на шею, и тогда ты станешь третьим высоким правителем в царстве".

Then Daniel answered and said before the king, Let thy gifts be to thyself, and give thy rewards to another; yet I will read the writing unto the king, and make known to him the interpretation.

И ответил тогда Даниил царю: "Царь Валтасар, оставь свои дары у себя, или отдай эти награды кому-нибудь другому. Я и так прочитаю для тебя письмена на стене и объясню их значение.

18

O thou king, the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father a kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honour:

18

Царь, Всемогущий Бог сделал твоего деда Навуходоносора великим и могущественным царём. Бог очень возвеличил его.

19

And for the majesty that he gave him, all people, nations, and languages, trembled and feared before him: whom he would he slew; and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he set up; and whom he would he put down.

Много разных народов и людей, говорящих на многих языках, трепетали перед Навуходоносором, потому что Всемогущий Бог возвысил его. Навуходоносор убивал, кого хотел, и оставлял в живых, кого желал; кого хотел — возвышал, и кого хотел — унижал.

20

But when his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him:

20

Но Навуходоносор возгордился и стал упрям, и власть была отнята у него. Он был свергнут с царского престола своего и лишён своей славы.

21

And he was driven from the sons of men; and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses: they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; till he knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men, and that he appointeth over it whomsoever he will.

И отлучили Навуходоносора от людей, и разум его стал подобен звериному. Он жил с дикими ослами и ел траву, как вол. Его орошала роса. Всё это происходило с ним до тех пор, пока он не познал, что Всевышний Бог правит царствами, и Бог Всевышний ставит над ними того, кого пожелает.

And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest all this;

Но ты, Валтасар, ты уже знал всё это! Ты внук Навуходоносора, но ты не смирил себя.

23

But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified:

Вместо того, чтобы смириться, ты обратился против Господа на небесах. Ты приказал принести себе чаши из храма Господа. А потом ты и твои приближённые, ваши жёны и наложницы пили вино из этих чаш. Ты славил богов серебряных, золотых, бронзовых, железных, деревянных и каменных. Они и не боги-то вовсе, они не видят, не слышат и ничего не понимают. Но ты не почитал Бога, Который имеет власть над твоей жизнью и всем тем, что ты делаешь.

Then was the part of the hand sent from him; and this writing was written.

Вот поэтому Бог послал эту руку, которая писала на стене.

And this is the writing that was written, MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.

Вот какие слова начертаны на ней: МЕНЕ, МЕНЕ, ТЕКЕЛ, УПАРСИН.

This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it.

А вот, что означают эти слова: МЕНЕ: Бог сосчитал дни до конца твоего царства.

27

TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.

27

ТЕКЕЛ: Тебя взвесили на весах и нашли, что ты недостаточно хорош.

28

PERES; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.

28

УПАРСИН: Царство твоё у тебя отнимается и будет оно разделено между мидянами и персами".

Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.

Тогда Валтасар отдал приказ облачить Даниила в багряницу и надеть ему на шею золотую цепь, и провозгласили его третьим правителем в царстве.

30

In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain.

30

В ту же самую ночь Валтасар, царь Вавилона, был убит.

And Darius the Median took the kingdom, being about threescore and two years old.

31

Новым царём стал Дарий Мидянин, которому в то время было около шестидесяти двух лет.
