King James Bible

New Living Translation

  • Out of Egypt I called my Son

When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.
  • The LORD’s Love for Israel

“When Israel was a child, I loved him,
and I called my son out of Egypt.
  • As they called them, so they went from them: they sacrificed unto Baalim, and burned incense to graven images.
  • But the more I called to him,
the farther he moved from me,a
offering sacrifices to the images of Baal
    and burning incense to idols.
  • I taught Ephraim also to go, taking them by their arms; but they knew not that I healed them.
  • I myself taught Israelb how to walk,
leading him along by the hand.
But he doesn’t know or even care
that it was I who took care of him.
  • I drew them with cords of a man, with bands of love: and I was to them as they that take off the yoke on their jaws, and I laid meat unto them.
  • I led Israel along
with my ropes of kindness and love.
I lifted the yoke from his neck,
and I myself stooped to feed him.
  • He shall not return into the land of Egypt, but the Assyrian shall be his king, because they refused to return.
  • “But since my people refuse to return to me,
    they will return to Egypt
and will be forced to serve Assyria.
  • And the sword shall abide on his cities, and shall consume his branches, and devour them, because of their own counsels.
  • War will swirl through their cities;
their enemies will crash through their gates.
    They will destroy them,
trapping them in their own evil plans.
  • And my people are bent to backsliding from me: though they called them to the most High, none at all would exalt him.
  • For my people are determined to desert me.
They call me the Most High,
but they don’t truly honor me.
  • God's Mercy Toward Israel

How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? how shall I deliver thee, Israel? how shall I make thee as Admah? how shall I set thee as Zeboim? mine heart is turned within me, my repentings are kindled together.
  • “Oh, how can I give you up, Israel?
How can I let you go?
How can I destroy you like Admah
    or demolish you like Zeboiim?
My heart is torn within me,
    and my compassion overflows.
  • I will not execute the fierceness of mine anger, I will not return to destroy Ephraim: for I am God, and not man; the Holy One in the midst of thee: and I will not enter into the city.
  • No, I will not unleash my fierce anger.
I will not completely destroy Israel,
for I am God and not a mere mortal.
I am the Holy One living among you,
and I will not come to destroy.
  • They shall walk after the LORD: he shall roar like a lion: when he shall roar, then the children shall tremble from the west.
  • For someday the people will follow me.
I, the LORD, will roar like a lion.
    And when I roar,
my people will return trembling from the west.
  • They shall tremble as a bird out of Egypt, and as a dove out of the land of Assyria: and I will place them in their houses, saith the LORD.
  • Like a flock of birds, they will come from Egypt.
Trembling like doves, they will return from Assyria.
And I will bring them home again,”
    says the LORD.
    Charges against Israel and Judah
  • Ephraim compasseth me about with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit: but Judah yet ruleth with God, and is faithful with the saints.
  • cIsrael surrounds me with lies and deceit,
    but Judah still obeys God
and is faithful to the Holy One.d
