King James Bible

New International Version

  • Judgment on Israel's Neighbors

The words of Amos, who was among the herdmen of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.
  • The words of Amos, one of the shepherds of Tekoa — the vision he saw concerning Israel two years before the earthquake, when Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam son of Jehoasha was king of Israel.
  • And he said, The LORD will roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the habitations of the shepherds shall mourn, and the top of Carmel shall wither.
  • He said:
    “The Lord roars from Zion
    and thunders from Jerusalem;
the pastures of the shepherds dry up,
and the top of Carmel withers.”
  • Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Damascus, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have threshed Gilead with threshing instruments of iron:
  • Judgment on Israel’s Neighbors

This is what the Lord says:
    “For three sins of Damascus,
even for four, I will not relent.
    Because she threshed Gilead
    with sledges having iron teeth,
  • But I will send a fire into the house of Hazael, which shall devour the palaces of Benhadad.
  • I will send fire on the house of Hazael
that will consume the fortresses of Ben-Hadad.
  • I will break also the bar of Damascus, and cut off the inhabitant from the plain of Aven, and him that holdeth the sceptre from the house of Eden: and the people of Syria shall go into captivity unto Kir, saith the LORD.
  • I will break down the gate of Damascus;
I will destroy the king who is inb the Valley of Avenc
and the one who holds the scepter in Beth Eden.
The people of Aram will go into exile to Kir,”
    says the Lord.
  • Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Gaza, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they carried away captive the whole captivity, to deliver them up to Edom:
  • This is what the Lord says:
    “For three sins of Gaza,
even for four, I will not relent.
Because she took captive whole communities
    and sold them to Edom,
  • But I will send a fire on the wall of Gaza, which shall devour the palaces thereof:
  • I will send fire on the walls of Gaza
    that will consume her fortresses.
  • And I will cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod, and him that holdeth the sceptre from Ashkelon, and I will turn mine hand against Ekron: and the remnant of the Philistines shall perish, saith the Lord GOD.
  • I will destroy the kingd of Ashdod
and the one who holds the scepter in Ashkelon.
I will turn my hand against Ekron,
till the last of the Philistines are dead,”
    says the Sovereign Lord.
  • Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Tyrus, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they delivered up the whole captivity to Edom, and remembered not the brotherly covenant:
  • This is what the Lord says:
    “For three sins of Tyre,
even for four, I will not relent.
Because she sold whole communities of captives to Edom,
    disregarding a treaty of brotherhood,
  • But I will send a fire on the wall of Tyrus, which shall devour the palaces thereof.
  • I will send fire on the walls of Tyre
    that will consume her fortresses.”
  • Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he did pursue his brother with the sword, and did cast off all pity, and his anger did tear perpetually, and he kept his wrath for ever:
  • This is what the Lord says:
    “For three sins of Edom,
even for four, I will not relent.
Because he pursued his brother with a sword
and slaughtered the women of the land,
    because his anger raged continually
    and his fury flamed unchecked,
  • But I will send a fire upon Teman, which shall devour the palaces of Bozrah.
  • I will send fire on Teman
that will consume the fortresses of Bozrah.”
  • Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of the children of Ammon, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have ripped up the women with child of Gilead, that they might enlarge their border:
  • This is what the Lord says:
    “For three sins of Ammon,
even for four, I will not relent.
Because he ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead
in order to extend his borders,
  • But I will kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah, and it shall devour the palaces thereof, with shouting in the day of battle, with a tempest in the day of the whirlwind:
  • I will set fire to the walls of Rabbah
    that will consume her fortresses
amid war cries on the day of battle,
amid violent winds on a stormy day.
  • And their king shall go into captivity, he and his princes together, saith the LORD.
  • Her kinge will go into exile,
    he and his officials together,”
    says the Lord.
